NFL FanIQ & A: Talking Chicago Bears with Critical Fanatic
READ MORE:
Welcome to the latest installment of a FanIQ Blog series, where Nate interviews members of the community on their favorite NFL teams.  Training Camp is just around the corner, so he decided to make you the experts.  What was he thinking?  Today, none other than Critical Fanatic will be talking about his Bears and their odds at another chance at the 'Big Game' ...

Nate:  Rex Grossman seems to get the most amount of criticism on the Bears and has a huge problem with consistency.  Is it a surprise to you that he will be coming back next season and starting again?

CF:
No surprise, Lovie Smith is tied to him as his QB. "Rex Grossman is our starting Quarterback." As much as I don't think he's the answer, I understand that Lovie has to put his trust behind him; you can't just abandon your QB (when you're a coach) after mistakes (i.e. Romo). But as a fan, you can call him a douche bag all you want

Ignoring the Romo comment...What will Rex need to work on if he wants to improve and be a much more consistent QB next season?

1) Not make any New Years plans
2) Step into his passes
3) step into his passes
4) step into his passes

Alright, moving away from Rex Grossman.  Defensive Coordinator Ron Rivera was let go by the Bears last season despite having the number one defense in the league last season.  Was this a smart move, and will it come back to haunt the Bears this coming season?

Let go? is a bit of an odd term. Ron Rivera chose to leave because he needs to prove himself outside of Lovie Smith.  The main reason Ron Rivera didn't get a head coaching job is because he couldn't prove their top defense was his doing, more than it was Lovie's. So I'm happy for Ron to get his chance, it was a great move for him.  Should the Bears have made a stronger effort to keep him?  I guess, but the Bears owners are cheap and I understand the business side of things.  I'm not too concerned right now, Urlacher is still MLB.

There are still some concerns on defense you have Tank Johnson released after being pulled over by the police, and Lance Briggs threatening to hold out this coming season.  Is there enough depth on the Bears' roster to keep them from really feeling the loss of these two player, assuming Briggs chooses not to play?

There isn't -- let's assume Briggs holds out -- the Bears will experience a little let down in effectiveness.  Tommie Harris is healthy (he was sorely missed in the super bowl), rookie Dan Bazuin could help, but you can't ignore Tank's ability to clog the running lanes.  Even so, I'm glad he's gone.  I don't want the Bears to be enablers anymore.  To answer your question more to a point, the Bears aren't going to be as good defensively as last year. That's why the pressure is on Rex and the offense.

Who is going to have the biggest impact, as far as free agent signings are concerned, for the Bears next season?

Honestly, the loss of Thomas Jones is going to make the biggest impact, but that's not really a free agent signing. The biggest FA signing for the Bears is a pretty short list. They kept Reuben Brown, grabbed Ayanbadejo from Arizona and DT Anthony Adams from San Francisco. If I had to pick one, it's Adams strictly because it's the position of importance. (OT: I do love what the Bears did with the draft - Garrett Wolfe and Greg Olsen will have an immediate impact.)

If there was a chance that one team could put a stop to the Bears going back to the Super Bowl again this season, who would have the best chance of doing that?

Honestly, I think the Bears (assuming Briggs doesn't play) are the 3rd best team in the NFC.  Dallas should be better ... and this will surprise you ... I think SF is going to be REAL good.

Honestly you mentioning Dallas was surprising...

So can the Bears make it back to the Super Bowl, what would it take for them to do so?

In the NFC and in particular the NFC North, the Bears can definitely make it back to the Super Bowl.  Rex can't possibly be as bad as last year, Cedric Benson could possibly be as proficient as his mouth is, and the WR crew is underrated even with Rex.  Not to mention the defense will still be one of the best in the game.  I'm not going to predict a Super Bowl run, but you still have to consider the Bears a contender.  Last year they were a one bad Hasselbeck throw away from not even being close.

Alright, well that's all I have.  Thanks for the interview Jason.  Monday we will be talking about the Arizona Cardinals with Jon.  I'll go ahead and leave you with the last word.

It's all on Sexy Rexy...Lovie Smith says, "Rex Grossman is our Quarterback" ... and the Bears season depends on him.  Either he says "F*&k it, I'm throwing deep" ... or he decides to step into his throw and the Bears will return to the Super Bowl to lose to whoever represents the AFC.  I love the Bears, but they are not winning a super bowl with Rex as QB. Bear Down...

Editorial Note:  CF would like all of the readers to know that he in no way likes Rex Grossman nor thanks he is the answer for the team at QB, Rex Grossman is a total Douche bag as stated in the first question.

Wow, jumping on that 49er bandwagon REALLY quickly.  Being a top 3 NFC team I think is a stretch, they still have defensive line problems, and if Gore goes down, the offense goes with him.  They don't have anyone else who can run.

It's kind of funny that an Indianapolis fan would be the one to point that out about the defensive line.  How good was the Super Bowl champs' defensive line last season?

The 49ers don't have the offense to make up for a lackluster line.  And the Colts line is far superior to the 49ers.  They have no real defensive tackle, and on the ends you have a very old Bryant Young and an average Marques Douglas.  The rest of the defense should be improved, but those linebackers will be busy.  The 49ers offense also has questions.  If Gore can be what he was last year (a beast) then the offense should be fine.  But they don't have any other running back worth anything, and if Gore gets hurt or just worn out, I don't think the passing game is good enough (yet) to carry them.  In time, Smith to Davis could be lethal, but I don't think either guy is quite there yet, and Darrell Jackson can only be so helpful.

Your "last word" put mine to shame.

You must have been a little more prepared for that curveball (at least, considering I hadnt read any of these interviews before mine was conducted, I thought it was a curveball. lol)
