Welcome to the latest installment of the FanIQ blog, that make you the expert of your favorite NFL Team. Training Camp is right around the corner, so here is your chance to chime in with your expert analysis. Today we'll be talking about the Cowboys with Flousc, and their chances of getting to the 'Promised Land'...Nate: The biggest story in Dallas this off season was the Coaching change. What will be some of the differences we should expect from a Wade Phillips ran team as opposed to the Bill Parcells ran team?
Harden: Well I think the first thing that jumps to mind is the players are going to play more loose under Wade. That is a given. I guess that can be a good or a bad thing, that just depends on how the players respond to it. As for on the field, I think no doubt the defense will benefit greatly. They should rack up more sacks under his 3-4 aggressive style and get more pressure and hopefully this can help the secondary who has clearly been the weakspot of late. I also don't expect the offense to be so conservative with Garrett controlling the offense.
A lot of seemed to be a little concern about Garret being the offensive coordinator, having never been more than a QB's coach in his entire coaching career. How do you think he will do?
I think he will be alright. He backed up Aikman all those years, and what better way to learn the game than by holding a clipboard backing up a great like Troy? Seriously though, sure he is young and inexperienced, but all good coaches began somewhere and with the talent he is being dealt, I'd be shocked if he didn't succeed, assuming the offensive line can come together and get protection and open some holes for Jones and Barber.
As I said before as well, he definitely won't be as conservative as Bill. I think playcalling cost the Cowboys a few games the past few seasons. That and field goal kicking of course.
Tony Romo's contract will be up at the end of the season, in an interview Romo said he would like to get a new deal worked out before the season. When should we expect to see a new deal for Romo, and was it a bad idea for him to mention wanting a new deal?
Well, honestly, I think Romo should just play the upcoming season and then worry about his paycheck. As good as he may have been last season, he has to realize it wasn't a full season and against the good defenses he really struggled after that initial burst on the scene. I think he has to prove himself before Jerry gives him a new contract. I wouldn't blame Jerry if he gave him a contract before the season, but at this point I'd be surprised. Now maybe if it was full of incentives, but if not, I just don't see it.
I am excited about Romo and his future, but I want to see him in a full season before I get too excited.
We can't do a Dallas Cowboys interview with out mentioning a certain player, "The Player" to be exact. What should we expect from Terrell Owens this season, and will he be a distraction to the team?
Well, so far so good but it isn't August yet. That is when something should pop up. Unless by some miracle he keeps his mouth shut. On the field though, assuming he stays healthy, I expect we will see the typical 12-15 td's from him, with hopefully alot less drops. There is no getting around the fact that he is a great player, so I expect great things. So long as they can keep things together, I think he should be ok. T.O. can usually find something to whine about, but if the Cowboys are winning, and he is getting the ball, with a new coach, the only people he should be frustrating are the players on the opposite team. Like I said though, he can always find something so we'll see. With him you have to expect him to do something ridiculous at some point, even if only for attention.
Who is going to be the biggest off-season pick up for the Cowboys this coming season?
I don't know...I think the pickup of Leonard Davis can be a really big pick up if he performs at Guard. I know he didn't live up to the hype in Arizona, but he is a big specimen of a man, and I think he will be huge for Dallas at Guard. Our OL is the one position that scares me more than anything, yes, even more than the secondary. So that is who I am going with. Although, I think the pickup of Ken Hamlin and drafting of Anthony Spencer could prove to be huge as well.
What team in the NFC East worries you more going into next season?
Eagles as usual. Their defense will be nasty as usual and if McNabb is healthy, that is a very explosive offense. Of course, it was potent without McNabb last season. Giants and Redskins I have no fear for. Barber retiring will prove once and for all how overrated Eli is and the Redskins, well they're the Redskins.
Can the Cowboys make it to the Super Bowl this season, and what will it take?
Actually, I think they will get there. I think they would lose to the Patriots, Colts or Chargers, but I do think they will get there. Anyways, I think the #1 key is the health of T.O. and Terry Glenn. If they stay healthy, and the OL is just average, they will be able to score points. I expect a bigger year from Jones as well. He should get it more than last season, and that combined with Barber is a huge change of pace. Defensively I don't think they can be any worse than they were at moments last season, so I expect that will only help. That and many many more sacks and turnovers. Just need to stop the run. As for kicking, I for one am actually not too sour on Gramatica. I think he did damn good last season for the most part, and if not, the PK they drafted is supposedly big-time. I am more excited about the Cowboys than I have been in years.
Well that's all the Questions I have. Thanks for the interview Harden. You can go ahead and have the last word.
I know everyone hates the Cowboys, unless you love them. So get ready to hate a winner again. Super Bowl bound in 2007! How 'bout them Cowboys!
