This is the next installment of a new Q & A series where Nate will be interviewing fans from the FanIQ community about their favorite NFL teams. As we approach Camps later this month, you're the experts now. Today's fan is IndyDave talking about his IndyColts and how Peyton can get his 2nd ring ...Nate: Last season the Colts had a heck of a time stopping the run, have they done anything yet to help solve the problem?
Dave: Good question-- yes they have-- they found out that there were a few things contributing to this problem, but the 2 biggest reasons for the defensive breakdown were: 1) they had inexperienced players playing on the field, I believe they were playing with their 4th and 5th string safeties at one point in the season. 2) some of the players (one player in particular, but also a couple others) did not perform the way they should, like missing lane assignments against the run, and resulted in giving up big rushing gains. There were other adjustments made-- and I believe that they held these "adjustments" close to the chest and used them come playoff time...
The Colts had a pretty large turn over rate this season. Who is going to be the biggest loss?
Probably a combination of Jason David and Nick Harper, equally. These guys were major players to the pass defense.
I notice you didn't say Dominick Rhodes. Is that because you are comfortable with Joseph Addai handling the bulk of the carries this season?
I think he can handle the load, but I also believe there could be a possible pickup for another RB to share the load. Dominic Rhodes is what he was for the Colts, a good solid player that could occasionally make big plays. If there's an area that's questionable to me, "who will be the #2 RB" is one of the biggest question marks of the Colts' roster.
Who would you like to see them fill that spot with?
Well, I know Corey Dillon is available, so is Chris Brown, and I know I'm forgetting a RB or two, but Dillon comes to mind the quickest-- they could use a guy with size to be the "closer", kinda like Dominic Rhodes was for the Colts-- he demonstrated that big-time in Super Bowl XLI. I probably wouldn't rule out a trade in the future either for RB depth.
Who was the biggest off season pick up the Indianapolis Colts?
Well, you know how active the Colts are in the FA market, so I'd probably say that outside of the draft, maybe Rick Demulling (OL)-- he was a former Colt and came back to the team in FA to add depth.
And who do you think will be the rookie stand out this season for the Colts? And why?
I think it'll be either be 2 of the first 4 picks, Anthony Gonzalez or Daymeion Hughes. Hughes will probably make his impact as the 5th DB, and shown great cover skills during his collegiate career. I believe Gonzalez will be the standout out of all the draft picks-- Brandon Stokely played the slot WR for the past 3 years for the Colts, but only took the field for one season. Gonzalez should be every bit the slot receiver that Stokely was except a lot faster, and much more durable.... The one season anyone got to see Stokely in the Colts offense he had over 1,000 receiving yards. Overall, after looking at the whole 2007 draft, I really like the personnel Bill Polian & Company drafted.
How do you feel about Rodger Goodell's handling of troubled player's around the league? And who would you give credit to, for having so few problem players on the team in recent years?
I believe Goodell is holding each NFL player accountable for his own actions-- which is something that all professional sports should do, but he's not turning it into a "witch hunt" of any sort for a player that gets an obscure minor offense, he's going after the habitual offenders. I also like the trickle down effect it is having on NFL franchises being held accountable for harboring players that break the law frequently. I attribute the (relative) good behavior of most of the Colts players to Bill Polian who selected these football players to have great character, and Tony Dungy to build a team using a religious based philosophy, and coach the team with that philosophy in mind.
So what do you think it will take for the Colts to repeat in the Super Bowl?
For the team to stay healthy, also for the rookies to get up to speed quickly. The offense will be every bit as potent as ever, so watch out opposing defenses! The defense should not look like it did in the middle of the season either.
Alright, well that's all I have. Next up will be Jess and the Seahawks. I'll go ahead and give you the last word.
OK.... Behold the next NFL dynasty-- the Indianapolis Colts.
