NFL FanIQ & A: Talking Indianapolis Colts with IndyDave
READ MORE:
This is the next installment of a new Q & A series where Nate will be interviewing fans from the FanIQ community about their favorite NFL teams. As we approach Camps later this month, you're the experts now. Today's fan is IndyDave talking about his IndyColts and how Peyton can get his 2nd ring ...

Nate: Last season the Colts had a heck of a time stopping the run, have they done anything yet to help solve the problem?

Dave: Good question-- yes they have-- they found out that there were a few things contributing to this problem, but the 2 biggest reasons for the defensive breakdown were: 1) they had inexperienced players playing on the field, I believe they were playing with their 4th and 5th string safeties at one point in the season. 2) some of the players (one player in particular, but also a couple others) did not perform the way they should, like missing lane assignments against the run, and resulted in giving up big rushing gains. There were other adjustments made-- and I believe that they held these "adjustments" close to the chest and used them come playoff time...

The Colts had a pretty large turn over rate this season.  Who is going to be the biggest loss?

Probably a combination of Jason David and Nick Harper, equally.  These guys were major players to the pass defense.

I notice you didn't say Dominick Rhodes.  Is that because you are comfortable with Joseph Addai handling the bulk of the carries this season?

I think he can handle the load, but I also believe there could be a possible pickup for another RB to share the load.  Dominic Rhodes is what he was for the Colts, a good solid player that could occasionally make big plays.  If there's an area that's questionable to me, "who will be the #2 RB" is one of the biggest question marks of the Colts' roster.

Who would you like to see them fill that spot with?

Well, I know Corey Dillon is available, so is Chris Brown, and I know I'm forgetting a RB or two, but Dillon comes to mind the quickest-- they could use a guy with size to be the "closer", kinda like Dominic Rhodes was for the Colts-- he demonstrated that big-time in Super Bowl XLI.  I probably wouldn't rule out a trade in the future either for RB depth.

Who was the biggest off season pick up the Indianapolis Colts?

Well, you know how active the Colts are in the FA market, so I'd probably say that outside of the draft, maybe Rick Demulling (OL)-- he was a former Colt and came back to the team in FA to add depth.

And who do you think will be the rookie stand out this season for the Colts?  And why?

I think it'll be either be 2 of the first 4 picks, Anthony Gonzalez or Daymeion Hughes.  Hughes will probably make his impact as the 5th DB, and shown great cover skills during his collegiate career.  I believe Gonzalez will be the standout out of all the draft picks-- Brandon Stokely played the slot WR for the past 3 years for the Colts, but only took the field for one season.  Gonzalez should be every bit the slot receiver that Stokely was except a lot faster, and much more durable....  The one season anyone got to see Stokely in the Colts offense he had over 1,000 receiving yards.  Overall, after looking at the whole 2007 draft, I really like the personnel Bill Polian & Company drafted.

How do you feel about Rodger Goodell's handling of troubled player's around the league?  And who would you give credit to, for having so few problem players on the team in recent years?

I believe Goodell is holding each NFL player accountable for his own actions-- which is something that all professional sports should do, but he's not turning it into a "witch hunt" of any sort for a player that gets an obscure minor offense, he's going after the habitual offenders.  I also like the trickle down effect it is having on NFL franchises being held accountable for harboring players that break the law frequently.  I attribute the (relative) good behavior of most of the Colts players to Bill Polian who selected these football players to have great character, and Tony Dungy to build a team using a religious based philosophy, and coach the team with that philosophy in mind.

So what do you think it will take for the Colts to repeat in the Super Bowl?

For the team to stay healthy, also for the rookies to get up to speed quickly.  The offense will be every bit as potent as ever, so watch out opposing defenses!  The defense should not look like it did in the middle of the season either.

Alright, well that's all I have.  Next up will be Jess and the Seahawks.  I'll go ahead and give you the last word.

OK....   Behold the next NFL dynasty-- the Indianapolis Colts.

I don't know man, they have been on the verge for awhile now.  They are still the biggest opposition for the Patriots next Super Bowl run.

I still am exteremely concerned with the horrible linebacker group that defense has.  Offense is set, defensive line is solid, secondary is alright provided Bob doesn't get injured as always.

Pat will bad mouth any team (or QB) that threatens what the Patriots have. You should know this by now. ;)

One correction for SuperDave: Chris Brown did re-sign with the Titans.
I liked your tempered enthusiasm. You obviously know it's tough to repeat in the NFL. I don't think the Colts get it done with that "D"

Who is the "one player in particular" that missed all his lane assignments last year? (question 1)

I don't know if I'm thinking the way SuperDave was but for me the answer to that would be Dwight Freeney.  He is a great passrusher but this season he wasn't getting to the quarterback and was leaving huge holes for the RB's to exploit.

Like I said, Dave may have had someone else in mind (Gardner, maybe?)

I know what you're referring to, and I think it's cute that you think your fellow (OH) alum is even on our radar anymore.

I was thinking Gilbert Gardner bigtime, but Freeney was also one of the others I was referring to.  Of course, Gardner is long gone from the Colts now!

Freeney did under perform, but a lot of teams double teamed him the whole game.

Gardner was useless, but I can't see how Hagler or Keiaho does any better than he did this coming year...

Thanks man. This was a good interview by the way!

Ya, but Freeney has never done anything to stop the run.  Even in his best seasons he is all about the pass rush.  It's just his style.  He has to sacrifice in order to make a good pass rush (and draw double teams).  As soon as the ball is snapped he runs all the way upfield and goes around the OT.  Creating large holes (which were supposed to be covered by Gardner). HAHA

Dynasty it is.  they been on the run for the last couple of years getting all the experience they needed to start the dynasty.  They have the offence, the quarterback,  and the defence comes to play when needed. we got a few good draft picks and maybe we can get a few good trade with FA and colts will remain solid.

Everyone must have forgotten about all of the Colts' free agency losses. They're not going to be nearly as potent this year on defense. Which will be their downfall again, since Peyton can't truly carry a team in the playoffs.

The only thing I would worry about is the over all age of the team.  Payton Manning isn't going to get any younger, Marvin Harrison isn't a spring chicken either.  At some point these players will start coming down.  That and I am not at all convinced that the NFC isn't ready to contend against the AFC, there has been a rebuilding phase in the NFC the last several years with many of the teams, but the AFC will have to go through the same thing here really soon, and retreads aren't going to cut it.

The Colts should be fine as far as getting to the playoffs, the only team that will make a serious run at the division will be Jacksonville.  How far they get in the playoffs, I don't know.

I think you might be overrating Jacksonville a might.

Jacksonville actually was good last year, they finished 8-8 but many of those losses were very close games.  They have a very tough defense.

There's a replacement player on the Colts roster for everyone that's departed, and they all have starting experience too.

I'm a little concerned about DeDe Dorsey being the #2 behind Mr. Addai, though-- I'll go on blind faith that since there hasn't been a transaction for another RB yet, maybe he can get the job done.

hehehehe-- like I said months ago, the way linebackers leave for FA from the Colts they seem like the JV for NFL linebackers-- now Cato June is movin' to the big leagues!

Good point about Montae being missed-- one of the reasons the Colts traded for Booger McFarland was Montae (of course, the other being Corey Simon) and the way he helped stuff up the line of scrimmage-- another key personnel adjustment I think.

I'm with Nate. That defense is not as good as their ranking last year. The Jags ran the ball extremely well and kept Jags defense of the field. They were torched by the Redskins last year and couldn't win in Buffalo when it really counted. Jags will be below .500 this year

I'm sure whoever Dungy throws together on defense will work out.  If the man (Bob Sanders) is healthy, not a lot else matters.  Dungy is a defensive minded coach and will find a way to get the job done.  As for Harrison, he may not have the speed he used to, but he will catch ANY ball in his vicinity (Isn't that right Patriots fans).  And Wayne has to be the best #2 receiver in the league.  I feel very confident in the Colts bid at repeat.

It doesn't matter how strong the Jags defense is we have Peyton Manning.
