NFL FanIQ & A: Talking Minnesota Vikings with EdSpeshel
READ MORE:
Welcome to the Latest edition of NFL FanIQ & A, the NFL Blog that makes you the expert.  Today we will be talking about the Minnesota Vikings with EdSpeshel, and how they will do this coming season...

Nate: Last season the Vikings switched from QB Brad Johnson to rookie QB Tarvaris Jackson. Tarvaris didn't have a great start, but he will continue to be the starter this coming season. What should we expect from him as far his progression and his future with the Vikings?

Jason: Early reports locally are that Jackson has the physical tools and a good grasp of the play-book, but he's having trouble dealing with pressure situations. Decision making wasn't his strong point last year and I think he'll struggle with that this year also. He is still young so I think he'll get better with time. I think the Vikings are going to stick with him no matter how much he struggles

Now this off season, Dallas picked up former Vikings QB Brad Johnson to be a veteran back up behind Romo and to also be sort of a mentor also, have the Vikings done anything like that for Tarvaris Jackson, or will they rely on the Quarterbacks coach to keep him up to speed?

They haven't done that with Jackson. They brought in former Cowboys QB Drew Henson and drafted Tyler Thigpen. Other than that they only have Brooks Bollinger, so I don't see any mentors in that bunch. There are some rumblings that the Vikings might pick up a veteran QB after some cuts have been made just for that purpose. No names have been thrown out there yet. So, yes I think the QB's coach will try to tame the beast that is Tarvaris Jackson. Brad Childress is supposed to be a QB "guru" so that should help out right?

Minnesota posted a 6 and 10 record last season, went 2 and 4 in their division, and lost every game to an AFC opponent. What were some of the problems, and what are they doing to fix them?

Play calling was one of the biggest problems with the offense. There were no real play-makers on the offense last year, which they addressed with Peterson and hopefully Sidney Rice. The running game gets a big boost with Tony Richardson coming back from his injury last year. He is a major upgrade at the FB position for the Vikings. The D was solid against the run but they got ZERO pass rush. They have Chad Greenway(LB), Tank Williams(S), ans Erasmus James(DE) all coming back from season ending injuries along with adding Mike Doss in the secondary. I'm also hoping the Brian Robison can add some needed spark to the DL and put some pressure on the opposing QB's.

What's going to be the biggest off-season addition to the team via the free agent market?

Probably(hopefully) it will be Bobby Wade. The Vikes need someone, anyone, to step up out of that WR core. Troy Williamson is the only other WR on the roster that has any chance of becoming a solid contributer this year. I also think that letting Fred Smoot go was an "addition" so I'll count that one also. The Vikes didn't make very many off season moves.

Now I am guessing the obvious answer here will be Adrian Peterson, but I'll ask anyways. What rookie will provide the most immediate improvement to the team this season, for the Vikes?

You nailed it. Outside of him the Vikings are thin at WR and DE so I'll put Sidney Rice and Brian Robison as two and three.

Going back to holes, what holes are still remaining to be filled going into the new season?

The Vikings have plenty of holes to fill. They have attempted to fill a lot of them with young guys(Jackson, Greenway) or guys that haven't panned out on other teams(Wade). The biggest hole has got to be the DE position. Udeze has been a bust, and James is heading in the same direction. Udeze had exactly 0.0 sacks last year... that's insane that he gets to start again this year.

What kind of a season would you predict for the Vikings this season?

Ummm... even with me being a homer, I still don't see the Vikings doing better than 3rd in the North. I would love to see them hit .500 but I'm seeing more like 5 wins. The only reason I picked them 3rd was Kitna's prediction of the Lions winning 10 games. That makes it official that the Lions will finish last.

Well that's all the questions I have Jason, thanks for the interview. As always, I'll leave you with the last word.

If we beat the Packers twice this year I'll count that as a good season. Nate you rock and these interviews are sweet. Good luck with your Cowboys and thanks for dumping Drew Henson on us!

The Lions will not finish last in the NFC North despite Kitna's loud mouth and suspect QB play.
