About Me:
I have recently started contributing to the columns at www.nflgridirongab.com and at www.cowboysgab.com. I encourage anyone to check out what I am writing over there, but if you are afraid to check out new places I will still be continuously contributing here as well. While I still enjoy long walks down short piers and going up the ol' smelly creek with out a paddle, I have grown tired of grapefruit monkeys in my cheerios.

NFL FanIQ & A: Talking Seattle Seahawks with Jess
7/4/07
This is the third installment of a new series where Nate will be interviewing fans from the FanIQ community about their favorite teams. As we approach camps later this month, you'll be the experts now. Today's fan is Jess talking about her Seattle Seahawks and how they will make their return trip to a Super Bowl after a sub-par season...Nate: Earlier in the off season Coach Holmgren said this would be his last season coaching. What kind of impact do you think that is going to have on the team this season, if any.
Jess: I think that the team is going to work their hardest to make a run this year, especially if they know this is his last season. Not that they wouldn't work hard anyway, but maybe instead of giving 95-100%, they're going to give it 120%. Especially the guys that have worked for a while with him, such as Hasselbeck, Alexander, Strong, etc. - they're going to want to win that Championship under him before he's gone.
What area of the team needs the biggest improvement in order to make that Super Bowl run for good ol' Coach?
I know a lot of people have a problem with the offensive line, but I think they've improved on that a bit. It's still up in the air. The defense needs to step it up for sure though; as great as our LB corps is, the front 7 needs to solidify and stop the running game. The secondary should be better this year, with Trufant back in his regular position and Jennings with a little more experience. Also, with Boulware, Babineaux, and now with Wilson there's so much talent there; as long as they work together as a unit they should be much better than they were last year. Really all in all, the defense just needs to work better as a unit, they were horrible defending the rush last year
If I recall correctly they also had to bring in a safeties or a corner off the street in time to play in the first playoff game against Dallas last season. Have they added anything to solidify that position?
Jim Mora (laughs). Okay in all honesty, adding Jim Mora to the coaching staff will definitely help solidify that area - we also drafted Josh Wilson early and picked up a couple of players both at safety AND corner that should add depth.
The Seahawks also dropped Ken Hamlin off their roster, is that going to have a negative impact?
I really don't think so. We have a good secondary corps, like I said it's just a matter of playing more as a unit. Hamlin is a great player but I doubt he'll be as missed on the roster as say, Herndon will be and Dyson was last year.
You hear a lot about players violating laws and league substance abuse policies these days, but it seems like the Seahawks have been really good at keeping their noses out of trouble. Who do you think should get the credit for that?
Holmgren should definitely get a lot of credit, as well as each of the players. They are a real stand-up team with a lot of integrity. Holmgren definitely commands a lot of respect, but he does so in a way that his players want to please him because they love him; not because they fear him. The general management of the team is responsible for that as well, as they usually tend not to keep "problem players" around very long.
Who is the biggest threat, in your division, to your team's success?
The entire division this year (laughs). The Rams are always an obstacle for Seattle, and I don't think that will change any time soon. The 49ers have been stacking their team and are looking a lot better this year than they have for a long time; with that receiving corps now if Smith has much chemistry and if Gore keeps playing like he did last year everyone in the NFC is in trouble. I wouldn't count Arizona out either, with Leinart having a year under his belt, and having performed well last year they should do very well. Not to mention they'll have both of their star receivers back in the lineup. I really don't think that we're going to have an easy time of defending the division title this year at all.
That said, do you think the Seahawks have a legitimate chance to make another run for the Super Bowl?
Absolutely, as long as everyone stays healthy and they go after it 100%. They can do it, a lot of our best players are coming back and as long as we don't' have a bunch of them go down like last year we'll be contenders.
Alright, well that's all the questions I have. Thank you Jess for the interview. Tomorrow we will have CornfedMK talking about the Carolina Panthers. I'll go ahead, Jess, and let you have the last word.
It's a little early to say much of anything in the way of predictions, (see me after training camp) but look for the Hawks to go deep in the playoffs and make a serious run for the Lombardi.
