This year, there are a ton of big name free agents out there. Some of them will sign with their respective teams before they get a chance to hit the open market later this month, but there's a chance for some teams to make huge improvements if they can make a move on a couple of these guys. Here's my list of the best free agent players in this year's class. I stuck with unrestricted free agents, but feel free to throw out your own opinions on this.
QB: Kurt Warner. He has already said that it's Cardinals or retirement, so in all likelihood, he's not really even on the market anyway. Matt Cassel is the next best, but he already got franchised by the Patriots, so he's off the table as well. That's where the list really drops off, but with a gun to my head, I'd take Byron Leftwich as the best of the remaining options. He showed some good things this year with the Steelers, and if he gets a chance, he could be the starter and do well in the right system.
RB: Brandon Jacobs all the way. There's really no question about this one.
WR: TJ Houshmandzadeh. He's ready to get away from the mess that is the Bengals, and he's ready to go be a definitive #1 WR somewhere. Brandon Lloyd is also worth taking a look at, and Dante Hall is out there, if anyone thinks he can get back to his glory days as an elite returner. He's not going to do much anywhere else, though.
TE: Bo Scaife is a guy with serious potential, and would probably be my pick here, if I desperately needed someone.
OL:After seeing the Colts floundering around without Jeff Saturday, it's clear that this guy is one of the best in the business. Of course, you should have known that already.
DT: All face stomping aside, it's Albert Haynesworth, without a doubt.
DE: It's not a bad time to need a DE. Bertrand Berry and Julius Peppers are excellent, and a hybrid like Terrell Suggs is nothing to scoff at, either. But if I'm looking for an elite pass rusher off the edge, it's Peppers.
LB: This is the deepest position out there, with Ray Lewis, Karlos Dansby, Bart Scott, Channing Crowder, Jonathon Vilma... wow. For my money, I'll go with the youth movement and take Vilma, who is only 26, but has averaged 130 tackles per year, if you throw out 2007, when he only played 7 games.
The lists for CB, Safety and kickers/punters will come out soon, and we'll discuss that. But for now, who is on your all-free agents team? How many of these guys will actually make it all the way to free agency, and who will sign with their current teams before they get a chance? What team will benefit the most from these guys? Check out the lists, and give your thoughts on it.
