You expect injuries to take a toll on fantasy football, but week one was more devastating than most. While the New England Patriots could be just fine with Matt Cassel, the same can't be said for Tom Brady owners. You can't just add in Matt Ryan and expect to see similar results. Here's the early week lowdown on injuries over the weekend.
Tom Brady - Done. Just in case you've been in a cave, Bill Belichick officially confirmed the official report of Brady officially injuring his knee severely enough to miss the season. Of course, Belichick didn't share what the actual injury was because he's Bill Belichick but that's besides the point. If you can beat other owners to the punch, I think Matt Cassel will do just fine as a fantasy reserve. He does have Randy Moss to throw to, after all.
Nate Burleson - Done for the year. A popular sleeper pick to have a breakout season, the Seahawks No. 1 wide receiver rewarded owners with an early touchdown on Sunday in Buffalo. But that's where the good news ended. During the third quarter Burleson tore his ACL and will be out for the season.
Who to pick up? If you're desperate, rookie Jordan Kent could be a nice find in his absence. Otherwise, you can expect good production from guys like David Patten (NO), Hank Baskett (PHI), Devrey Henderson (NO), Eddie Royal (DEN) who should be widely available today.
Vince Young - I would hope you weren't banking on VY to lead your fantasy team this season, but in case you were, start looking for a season long replacement, not just a 2-4 week fix. If he's out four weeks, you can figure it's another couple before he's a reliable starter.
Marion Barber - Bruised Ribs. The III got knocked out of Sunday's game in the third quarter with some bruised ribs, but with the game already in hand, it gave Dallas a chance to let Felix Jones work. Barber will be fine to go this Monday night against Philadelphia, but don't be surprised if he gets a few less carries.
Joseph Addai is on the injury report this week, but fear not, he's fine. Just a little banged up from a big hit late Sunday night against the Bears.
Willis McGahee hopes to go in Week 2. But who needs Willis when you've got Joe Flacco stumbling 30 yards for a touchdown? OK, so it won't be the Bengals every week. McGahee will be more active in practice this week, so while I'd expect him to go, we'll have to update this again Sunday morning. My guess is he'll be a game-time decision.
Ahman Green is day-to-day. Shocker. Shame on you for drafting Green if you were hoping for anything, but the Texans running back has a bum ankle. Look for someone else next week regardless of his status.
Jeff Garcia may sit out week 2. Remember when he said someone would have to pry the starting position out of his hands? Well turns out, all they had to do was just sit and watch 38-year-old play for one week. Garcia could be out for week two with an injured ankle. I wouldn't be surprised to see Brian Griese starting this Sunday.
Dallas Clark right knee OK for now. As if the opening night loss to Chicago wasn't bad enough, Indy now has to worry about it's top tight end. Clark didn't play in the second half, thrilling fantasy owners. I believe we'll have to wait until Sunday morning to see if he'll play. In the meantime, it wouldn't hurt to pick up rookie Jacob Tamme if you have room.
