NFL "Prediction Series" Breakdowns: Atlanta Falcons
READ MORE:
Welcome to the first installment of "MrNFL's prediction system previews."  On these posts, we will look at an NFL team, and grade them at different positions to figure out what record each team will get.  For a full explanation on how the system works, click here.

Today's team?  The Atlanta Falcons.

LAST SEASON: The Falcons fell short of the playoffs once again, dropping their last 3 games to finish with a record of 7-9.

Quarterbacks/Wide Receivers

QB's: Michael Vick, Joey Harrington, D. J. Shockley, Chris Redman

WR's: Joe Horn, Michael Jenkins, Roddy White, Adam Jennings, Laurent Robinson, Fred Gibson, Jamin Elliott

Vick's inconsistencies on the field and legal troubles don't shed a favorable light on him.  Harrington has yet to show that he is anything more than mediocre in his career.  Of course, neither guy has a lot of help.  Horn is old, and although he helps, he can't stay healthy, and even healthy he won't get more than 60 catches.  White and Jenkins are both very inconsistent and can't catch the ball.  They really don't have anything at WR either.  This isn't going to be fun for them.

QB/WR score: 6/10

Running Backs/Tight Ends

HB's: Warrick Dunn, Jerious Norwood, Jamal Roberson, Jason Snelling
FB's: Ovie Mughelli, Corey McIntyre

TE's: Alge Crumpler, Dwayne Blakley, Martrez Milner, Daniel Fells, Boone Stutz

Dunn can still get you yards, but he can't get you into the endzone.  I really like Norwood and think he's bound to have a breakout year.  They lost a good fullback in Griffith, but they got Mughelli, a solid blocking specialist.  As far as tight ends, Crumpler is one of the top tight ends in the game.  Overall, a good group, but Dunn's age and Norwood's inexperience hold them from a 9.

RB/TE Score: 8/10

Offensive Line

T's: Todd Weiner, Wayne Gandy, Quinn Ojinaka, Frank Omiyale, Leander Jordan

G's: Justin Blalock, Kynan Forney, Toniu Fonoti, Tyson Clabo, P.J. Alexander

C's: Todd McClure, Doug Datish

Weiner is a pretty good veteran tackle.  Gandy is old, but still a solid contributor at tackle.  McClure is a pretty good center.  However, the guards are a trouble.  They'll likely start 2nd rounder Blalock in, and although I think he'll be good, rookie OL often struggle.  Forney and Clabo are both "meh" and they don't really have anyone else to put there.  The lack of consistency at the guards costs this group an 8.

OL Score: 7/10

Defensive Line

DT's: Grady Jackson?, Rod Coleman, Jonathan Babineaux, Darrell Shropshire, Tommy Jackson, Trey Lewis
DE's: John Abraham, Jamaal Anderson, Josh Mallard, Chauncey Davis, Paul Carrington

They may not have Jackson, because although he's under contract, he's suing the Falcons.  They also may not have Coleman for all of the year, as he suffered an offseason injury.  The young Babineaux will likely play, but they don't really have anyone else if Coleman isn't ready.  Abraham is great when healthy, but he rarely seems to be healthy.  They did draft Anderson high, and he should do well.  The other ends are decent, but still a good deal of questions with this group.

DL Score: 7/10

Linebackers

LB's: Keith Brooking, Michael Boley, Orlando Huff, Demorrio Williams, Jordan Beck, Marcus Wilkins, Stephen Nicholas, John Leake

Brooking is a very good and under-rated linebacker.  Boley and Williams are both young, but solid, and Huff adds some depth.  The rest of the guys are either rookies or unproven guys who won't likely do much more than special teams.  Barring injury, they're likely fine at LB.

LB Score: 8/10

Defensive Backs

CB's: DeAngelo Hall, Jimmy Williams, Chris Houston, David Irons, Allen Rossum, Lewis Sanders

S's: Lawyer Milloy, Chris Crocker, Nick Turnbull, Omare Lowe, Daren Stone

Hall is fast, but still is a bit inconsistent in coverage.  However, he still is young, and should improve.  They drafted Williams last year, and Houston this year, and both will likely play a good deal.  Rossum is a kick returner and an average corner.  They still have a good veteran safety in Milloy, but nothing else.  Crocker and Lowe are both very average at best.  A lot of youth here, but Milloy and Hall can't get them a 7.

DB Score: 6/10

Special Teams

K: Billy Cundiff, Aaron Elling
P: Michael Koenen

KR: Allen Rossum

Neither Cundiff or Elling have been regular starters in a few years.  Cundiff was a kickoff specialist, and Elling was unemployed.  Neither is that good either.  Koenen is a solid punter.  The aging Rossum is still decent, but no longer a big threat to get touchdowns.  Lot of issues here.

ST Score: 6/10

Coaches

Head Coach: Bobby Petrino

O. Coordinator: Hue Jackson
D. Coordinator: Mike Zimmer

Although Petrino had success at Louisville, you always wonder about college coaches transitioning right into the NFL.  They brought in Zimmer who was a solid coordinator with the Cowboys for the longest time.  Jackson is coming over after being the Bengals WR coach.  Overall, a decent group.

Coach score: 3/5
