Welcome to the next installment of "MrNFL's prediction system previews." On these posts, we will look at an NFL team, and grade them at different positions to figure out what record each team will get. For a full explanation on how the system works, click here.
Today we look at the Arizona Cardinals.
LAST SEASON: The Cardinals had another mediocre Cardinal-like year, finishing 5-11.
Quarterbacks/Wide Receivers
QB's: Matt Leinart, Kurt Warner, Shane Boyd
WR's: Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin, Bryant Johnson, Steve Breaston, LeRon McCoy, Michael Spurlock, Sean Morey, Todd Watkins
Leinart had a very rookie like first year. With help on the line, Leinart should be improved, and have a pretty good year. Fitzgerald and Boldin are both pretty good young receivers. Johnson is a solid slot guy. Overall, a pretty good group. I'm tempted to give a 9, but with Leinart still being young, I can't give that 9.
QB/WR Score: 8/10
Running Backs/Tight Ends
HB's: Edgerrin James, Marcel Shipp, J.J. Arrington
FB's: Terrelle Smith, A.J. Schable
TE's: Leonard Pope, John Bronson, Nathan Hodel, Troy Bienanmen, Ben Patrick
James had his struggles last year, but if he can get some blocking, he can still be solid. He doesn't have anyone behind him, as Shipp and Arrington are both crap. Adding Smith was a great move, as he is a big blocking fullback who can help Edge out. They don't have much at tight end. Pope is young, and a decent receiver who may improve, but everyone else is mediocre at best. James and Smith are solid enough to barely get this group a 7.
RB/TE Score: 7/10
Offensive Line
T's: Levi Brown, Mike Gandy, Oliver Ross, Brandon Gorin, Qasim Mitchell
G's: Reggie Wells, Deuce Lutui, Elton Brown
C's: Nick Leckey, Al Johnson
Brown was a great pick, and he should help that line a lot. Gandy will likely take the other spot coming over from Buffalo. Ross has had injury problems. Both Gorin and Mitchell haven't started in a year. Wells is decent, and Lutui will likely start all year if he's healthy. Leckey is an alright center but he has injury issues too. Still a ton of concerns on this line.
OL Score: 6/10
Defensive Line
DT's: Alan Branch, Darnell Dockett, Ross Kolodziej, Gabe Watson, Jonathan Lewis
DE's: Bertrand Berry, Chike Okeafor, Rodney Bailey, Joe Tafoya, Antonio Smith, Chris Cooper
Dockett isn't a bad defensive tackle, and he should be a bit better with the rookie Branch beside him. Watson will likely be the first backup, and he's average. Berry has been injured a lot lately, and although he's great when healthy, he can't seem to stay healthy. Okeafor is a solid end at pass rushing. A decent group, not quite 8 worthy.
DL Score: 7/10
Linebackers
LB's: Karlos Dansby, Gerald Hayes, Darryl Blackstock, Monty Beisel, Calvin Pace, Brandon Johnson, Buster Davis
Dansby is alright as a pass rusher, but not too consistent against the run. Hayes had a solid year last season, he's a solid guy inside, but nothing special. The rest of the group are unproven players, and I have no idea who takes that spot. Problems a plenty here.
LB Score: 6/10
Defensive Backs
CB's: Antrel Rolle, Eric Green, Roderick Hood, Ralph Brown, Darrell Hunter, Matt Ware
S's: Adrian Wilson, Terrence Holt, Hanik Milligan, Aaron Fransisco
Wilson is one of the best and most under-rated defensive players in the league. Rolle is young and still improving, but isn't a real dynamic #1 yet. Green is average at very best, and Hood isn't more than a nickel guy. Holt is a solid pickup as it at least puts a guy with starter experience there, but he's average at best. This group is just good enough with two good players to get a 7.
DB Score: 7/10
Special Teams
K: Neil Rackers
P: Scott Player
KR: J.J. Arrington, Michael Spurlock
After a great year two years ago, Rackers was very shaky from long distance in 2006. Player is a pretty good punter, not great accuracy but a powerful leg. Arrington isn't a bad kick returner, but they don't have a punt returner who did any work last year. Overall, a decent group.
ST Score: 7/10
Coaches
Head Coach: Ken Whisenhunt
O. Coordinator: Todd Haley
D. Coordinator: Clancy Pendergast
Ken is getting his first head coaching job, and he had success with the running Steelers offenses. He also brought Steeler OL coach Russ Grimm with him. Haley previously was a WR coach for the Cowboys. Pendergast has been with the Cardinals for a few years, yet to have success.
Coach score: 3/5
