Welcome to the next installment of "MrNFL's prediction system previews." On these posts, we will look at an NFL team, and grade them at different positions to figure out what record each team will get. For a full explanation on how the system works, click here.
Today we look at the Indianapolis Colts.
LAST SEASON: The Colts went 12-4 in the regular season, on the way to winning the Super Bowl by beating the Chiefs, Ravens, Patriots, and Bears in the playoffs.
Quarterbacks/Wide Receivers
QB's: Peyton Manning, Jim Sorgi, Josh Betts, John Navarre
WR's: Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne, Anthony Gonzalez, Aaron Moorehead, John Standeford, Craphonso Thorpe, Devin Aromashodu, Roy Hall
Manning is arguably the best quarterback in the game. Marvin Harrison is one of the best #1 receivers in the league, and Wayne is essentially a #1 receiver in the 2 spot. They drafted Gonzalez in the first round, and he should have great success with all of the attention on the other two. No doubt this group is a 10.
QB/WR score: 10/10
Running Backs/Tight Ends
HB's: Joseph Addai, DeDe Dorsey, Luke Lawton, Kenton Keith
TE's: Dallas Clark, Ben Utecht, Bryan Fletcher, Mike Seidman, Justin Snow
Addai had a pretty good rookie season, and should a good feature back. The only probably is, they have NO ONE behind him. Of the guys behind him, they have a total 0 carries in the NFL, and if Addai struggles or gets hurt, that's trouble. They don't really have a fullback, although they don't really use one. Clark is a pretty good receiving tight end, and Utecht isn't bad either. Fletcher is a decent receiving specialist. The lack of depth at running back can only score them a 7.
RB/TE Score: 7/10
Offensive Line
T's: Ryan Diem, Tony Ugoh, Charlie Johnson, Micheal Toudouze, Daniel Federkeil
G's: Rick DeMulling, Jake Scott, Dylan Gandy, Ryan Lilja, Matt Ulrich
C's: Jeff Saturday, Albert Bimper
With Glenn retiring, this leaves a large hole at tackle. Even if the rookie Ugoh turns out to be great, he's still a rookie, and rookie linemen don't tend to be great. I don't exactly trust Johnson either. Diem on the other side is a very good tackle. Scott has proven to be a solid guard, but the other guard spot is a bit of a question. DeMulling had success as a Colt in the past, and is talented, but has had injury issues. Gandy isn't bad, and Lilja is average. As far as center, Saturday is one of the best in the league. The loss of Glenn is a big hit, but they are still good enough elsewhere to warrant a 9.
OL Score: 9/10
Defensive Line
DT's: Anthony McFarland, Raheem Brock, Dan Klecko, Darrell Reid, Quinn Pitcock
DE's: Dwight Freeney, Robert Mathis, Josh Thomas, Bo Schobel, Ryan LaCasse
McFarland isn't a bad defensive tackle, but he is the only person with size on this small line. Brock is essentially an end playing tackle, and Klecko and Reid aren't anything. They have good pass rushing ends, Freeney had an off year but is still a very good pass rusher, and Mathis is a good pass rush specialist. Thomas and Schobel are a bit better run stoppers, but not great. A decent group, but even with good pass rushing, they can't get higher than a 7.
DL Score: 7/10
Linebackers
LB's: Gary Brackett, Rob Morris, Freddy Keiaho, Keith O'Neil, Rocky Boiman, Tyjuan Hagler, Clint Session, Keyunta Dawson
Brackett is an alright middle linebacker, but he isn't that special. The veteran Morris isn't exactly a great outside linebacker, and they have no one else for the other spot. None of the other available guys have any starting experience, and none of them look to be that great. Horrible group, the team's biggest weakness.
LB Score: 5/10
Defensive Backs
CB's: Marlin Jackson, Kelvin Hayden, Tim Jennings, Daymeion Hughes, Antonio Perkins, T.J. Rushing, Tanard Davis, Michael Coe
S's: Bob Sanders, Antoine Bethea, Matt Giordano, Norman LeJeune, Brannon Condren
Both Jackson and Hayden have no NFL experience being 1 or 2 corners. Jackson was solid playing safety last year, and I think he'll be solid. Hayden is more of a concern, as I don't think he's more than a slot corner now. Jennings and Hughes will likely battle for the #3 slot, and neither really has any NFL experience. As far as safety, Sanders is great when healthy...except he's never healthy. Bethea had a breakout year, and he should continue to fill his role fine. Giordano isn't a horrible backup if when Sanders gets hurt, but he's not ideal. Assuming Sanders can actually stay healthy, this group gets a 7.
DB Score: 7/10
Special Teams
K: Adam Vinatieri
P: Hunter Smith, Reggie Hodges
KR: Antonio Gonzalez?
Vinatieri is a very good kicker who is one of the NFL's more accurate kickers. Smith has a very strong leg. He's not going to put too many inside the 20 however. They didn't resign returner Wilkins, so I have no clue who will return kicks for the Colts, perhaps Gonzalez will. With the huge upside with the kicker and punter, they still get an 8.
ST Score: 8/10
Coaches
Head Coach: Tony Dungy
O. Coordinator: Tom Moore
D. Coordinator: Ron Meeks
Dungy is one of the better coaches in the NFL, as the Colts have won a lot of games with him. Moore has been their offensive coordinator since 98, and has helped mold the great offense. Meeks has been their defensive coordinator since 2002. Pretty good group
Coach score: 5/5
