Welcome to the next installment of "MrNFL's prediction system previews." On these posts, we will look at an NFL team, and grade them at different positions to figure out what record each team will get. For a full explanation on how the system works, click here.
Today we look at the New York Jets.
LAST SEASON: After a dismal 2005, the Jets rebounded by finishing 10-6 and earning a playoff spot.
Quarterbacks/Wide Receivers
QB's: Chad Pennington, Kellen Clemens, Marques Tuiasosopo
WR's: Laveranues Coles, Jerricho Cotchery, Justin McCareins, Brad Smith, Tim Dwight, Frisman Jackson, Chansi Stuckey, Wallace Wright
Pennington is a solid NFL QB when healthy. He isn't that special, but he'll get the job done. Coles is a pretty good #1 receiver, who has a lot of speed. Cotchery had a huge breakout year last year, and we'll see if it was a fluke or if he's a legit #2 guy. McCareins is a solid slot receiver. Overall a solid group, but they just fall short of getting a 9.
QB/WR score: 8/10
Running Backs/Tight Ends
HB's: Thomas Jones, Leon Washington, Cedric Houston, Stacy Tutt
FB's: Darian Barnes
TE's: Chris Baker, Sean Ryan, Jason Pociask, Joe Kowalewski, James Dearth
The Jets didn't have a feature back, but that has changed with the addition of Thomas Jones. Jones is a good solid back who will give them 1000 yards and a good deal of carries. Jones will also make the speedy Washington and big back Houston a lot better. Barnes isn't a great fullback, but not bad. Baker is a decent receiving tight end, and a decent blocking tight end. Ryan isn't a bad blocker. Overall a solid group.
RB/TE Score: 8/10
Offensive Line
T's: D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Anthony Clement, Wade Smith, Ed Blanton, Adrian Jones, Na'Shan Goodard, Jacob Bender
G's: Pete Kendall, Brandon Moore, Adrien Clarke
C's: Nick Mangold
The rookies Ferguson and Mangold both were very good in their rookie year. They should only be improved. Clement had a solid year last year at the other tackle spot. Both Moore and Kendall are solid guards. Overall, a very good offensive line, but just short of the 10.
OL Score: 9/10
Defensive Line
DT's: Dewayne Robertson, Kimo von Olehoffen, Sione Pouha, C.J. Mosley, Zarnell Fitch
DE's: Shaun Ellis, David Bowens, Bobby Hamilton, Eric Hicks, Andre Wadsworth, Kenyon Coleman, Darrell Adams, Bryan Thomas, Michael Haynes
Robertson is a solid nose tackle for a 3-4 defense. Kimo isn't a bad backup nose tackle or a bad run stopping big end. Ellis is a pretty good end all around. Hamilton is a decent guy to be the other end, and Thomas is a great pass rushing end, but undersized to be a regular. Solid overall line, but I think they fall just shy of a 9.
DL Score: 8/10
Linebackers
LB's: Jonathan Vilma, Eric Barton, Victor Hobson, David Harris, Brad Kassell, Anthony Schlegel, Cody Spencer
Vilma is a very good young inside linebacker. He's one of the better in the league. Barton is an under-rated outside backer who has a lot of talent. Hobson is a pretty good guy on the other side either. The other inside spot is a bit of a concern, as Kassell is average, and the 2nd rounder Harris may not be ready to take over. Overall a great group, and even with the one hole, still get a 9.
LB Score: 9/10
Defensive Backs
CB's: Andre Dyson, Justin Miller, Darrelle Revis, David Barrett, Hank Poteat, Drew Coleman, Alphonso Hodge
S's: Erik Coleman, Kerry Rhodes, Eric Smith, Rashad Washington, Jamie Thompson, Raymond Ventrone
Dyson is a pretty good #1 corner. Miller and Barrett both aren't bad corners, but neither is really a great option for a #2 guy. The first round pick Revis may move into the #2 slot before seasons' end. Coleman is pretty good safety, and Rhodes is quickly becoming one of the NFL's best safeties. A pretty good group, they just get a 9.
DB Score: 9/10
Special Teams
K: Mike Nugent
P: Ben Graham
KR: Justin Miller, Tim Dwight
Nugent was much improved this past year, and appears to be a solid kicker. Graham is a pretty good punter. Miller is a fantastic kickoff returner, and Dwight is a solid punt returner. A very good group, but just fall shy of a 10.
ST Score: 9/10
Coaches
Head Coach: Eric Mangini
O. Coordinator: Brian Schottenheimer
D. Coordinator: Bob Sutton
Mangini had a very good year in his first season as a coach, getting a lot of praise. Schottenheimer is a 2nd year coordinator for them, and Sutton is also a 2nd year coordinator. Not a bad group.
Coach score: 3/5
