Welcome to the next installment of "MrNFL's prediction system previews." On these posts, we will look at an NFL team, and grade them at different positions to figure out what record each team will get. For a full explanation on how the system works, click here.
Today, we reach the final team, the Chargers.
LAST SEASON: The Chargers had the best record in the NFL, finishing 14-2 before being eliminated in the playoffs by the Patriots.
Quarterbacks/Wide Receivers
QB's: Philip Rivers, Billy Volek, Charlie Whitehurst, Brett Elliott
WR's: Craig Davis, Eric Parker, Kassim Osgood, Vincent Jackson, Malcom Floyd, Greg Camarillo, Legedu Naanee
Rivers had a very good year last season, and appears to be the real deal at QB. However, the wide receivers leave a bit to be desired. Parker is an average #2 guy who is their number 1. The rookie Davis was picked too early, Jackson is mediocre, and Floyd isn't any better. Upside at QB barely gets them a 7.
QB/WR score: 7/10
Running Backs/Tight Ends
HB's: LaDainian Tomlinson, Michael Turner, Darren Sproles, Tyrone Gross
FB's: Lorenzo Neal, Mike Warren, Andrew Pinnock
TE's: Antonio Gates, Brandon Manumaleuna, Scott Chandler, T.J. Cottrell, Kelly Griffeth
Tomlinson is the best all around running back in the league. Neal is the best blocking fullback in the league. Gates may be the best receiving tight end in the game. Not to mention Michael Turner. Easiest...ranking...ever.
RB/TE Score: 10/10
Offensive Line
T's: Marcus McNeill, Shane Olivea, Roman Oben, Cory Lekkerkerker (Great name) Jeromey Clark
G's: Mike Goff, Kris Dielman, Tony Pape, Scott Mruczkowski,
C's: Nick Hardwick, Cory Withrow, David Binn
Olivea is a very good young tackle, and McNeill had a beastly rookie year last season on the other side. Oben is a former starter if an injury occurs. Goff is a great veteran guard, and Dielman is pretty good as well. Hardwick is also a great center. Arguably, the best line in the NFL.
OL Score: 10/10
Defensive Line
DT's: Jamal Williams, Brandon McKinney, Ryon Bingham
DE's: Igor Olshansky, Luis Castillo, Derreck Robinson, Jacques Cesaire
Williams is one of the best 3-4 nose tackles in the game. Olshansky isn't a bad run stopper. Castillo is a solid all around power end, and Cesaire isn't bad either. Overall, a pretty good group, but they fall short of a 10.
DL Score: 9/10
Linebackers
LB's: Shawne Merriman, Shaun Phillips, Stephen Cooper, Carlos Polk, Marques Harris, Matt Wilhelm, Tim Dobbins, Anthony Waters, Brandon Siler
When he isn't popping roids, Merriman is a great pass rushing outside linebacker. Phillips is also a pretty good pass rushing linebacker. However, the questions are inside. Cooper may be their best option to be one of the inside backers, but he hasn't proven to be the guy. Polk and Harris may be the next best guys to replace Edwards and Godfrey. The despite the great upside outside, they fall short of the 8.
LB Score: 7/10
Defensive Backs
CB's: Quentin Jammer, Drayton Florence, Antonio Cromartie, Gabe Franklin, Cletis Gordon, Steve Gregory, Paul Oliver
S's: Marlon McCree, Clinton Hart, Eric Weddle, Bhawoh Jue
Jammer is a pretty good number 1 corner. Florence on the other side is solid as well, and the 2nd year Cromartie should be improved in the slot. Safety is a concern, as McCree is decent at best, Hart is relatively unproven, Weddle is a rookie, and a crappy Jue. Despite the flaws at safety, the great corners get them an 8.
DB Score: 8/10
Special Teams
K: Nate Kaeding
P: Mike Scifres
KR: Michael Turner, Darren Sproles
Kaeding is a very good kicker with great accuracy. Scifres doesn't have the strongest leg for a punter, but he is very good at placing kicks inside the 20. Turner is a pretty good kick returner, and Sproles is a solid kick and punt returner. Great group, but they are just shy of 10.
ST Score: 9/10
Coaches
Head Coach: Norv Turner
O. Coordinator: Clarence Shelmon
D. Coordinator: Ted Cotrell
Turner has had no success in previous head coaching stints, although with the talent he's presented, it's hard to screw it up. Shelmon is a first year coordinator, after being their running back coach. Cotrell is a first year coordinator with them, but has been around. Not to mention that former Bears coordinator Ron Rivera is on this staff.
Coach score: 3/5
