Welcome to the next installment of "MrNFL's prediction system previews." On these posts, we will look at an NFL team, and grade them at different positions to figure out what record each team will get. For a full explanation on how the system works, click here.
Today we look at the 49ers.
LAST SEASON: After a crappy 2005 season, the 49ers improved, finishing with a 7-9 record.
Quarterbacks/Wide Receivers
QB's: Alex Smith, Trent Dilfer, Shaun Hill
WR's: Darrell Jackson, Ashley Lelie, Jason Hill, Taylor Jacobs, Arnaz Battle, Bryan Gilmore, Brandon Williams
After his horrible rookie year, Smith looked a lot better last year, putting up average numbers. He should improve a bit this upcoming year with help. Jackson was a great pickup, and although he's not the greatest #1, he's solid. Battle looks like he's good enough to be a decent number 2, and Lelie can be effective as a slot guy. Decent group overall
QB/WR Score: 7/10
Running Backs/Tight Ends
HB's: Frank Gore, Michael Robinson, Maurice Hicks, Thomas Clayton
FB's: Moran Norris
TE's: Vernon Davis, Billy Bajema, Brian Jennings, Delanie Walker
Gore had a beastly year last season, the question is if he can do it again, as he'll probably get upwards of 350 carries. He doesn't have anyone behind him, Hicks is awful, and Robinson is mediocre at best. Norris is a decent blocking fullback. If Davis can stay healthy, he'll provide a great receiving threat out of the tight end slot. Just enough for an 8.
RB/TE Score: 8/10
Offensive Line
T's: Jonas Jennings, Joe Staley, Kwame Harris, Patrick Estes, Harvey Dahl
G's: Larry Allen, David Baas, Justin Smiley, Adam Snyder, Tony Wragge, Nick Stietz,
C's: Eric Heitmann
Jennings has had many injury problems with the 49ers. If healthy, he's a great tackle, but healthy has been tough for him. Harris may still start at the other tackle spot, leaving Staley to come in if Jennings can't stay healthy. Although Allen is old, he's still solid. Smiley isn't a bad second guard. Heitmann is a solid center. Overall, a decent group, but with injury issues, they fall short of the 8.
OL Score: 7/10
Defensive Line
DT's: Isaac Sopoaga, Damane Duckett, Aubrayo Franklin, John Syptak, Sam Rayburn, Joe Cohen
DE's: Bryant Young, Marques Douglas, Melvin Oliver, Jay Moore, Ray McDonald,
They really don't have anyone that has any starting experience at DT. Sopoaga is not very good, Franklin is average, and Duckett and the others have barely played. Young is still a solid end for the 3-4, but he's not getting younger. Douglas is average, and Oliver is still young and not starter material. This group is terrible, and it is going to likely cause many problems.
DL Score: 5/10
Linebackers
LB's: Manny Lawson, Patrick Willis, Brandon Moore, Jeff Ulbrich, Derek Smith, Tully Banta-Cain, Hannibal Naives, Parys Haralson, Colby Bockwoldt, Roderick Green, Zak Keasey
They have a lot of linebackers. The rookie Willis will likely start in the middle right away. Moore is solid. Lawson, Ulbrich, Smith, and Banta-Cain are all decent guys who can fill the other roles. Lawson should improve in his second year. Overall a solid group, but not quite 8 worthy
LB Score: 7/10
Defensive Backs
CB's: Nate Clements, Walt Harris, Shawntae Spencer, Donald Strickland, B.J. Tucker, Tarrell Brown
S's: Michael Lewis, Keith Lewis, Mark Roman, Marcus Hudson, Jermaine Hardy, Vickiel Vaughn, Dashon Goldson
Clements was a great pickup, who will be a very good #1 corner. Harris had a very good year last season, and should fill the #2 slot fine. Spencer is a capable #3 guy. M. Lewis is a decent run stopping safety, but an average pass coverage person. K. Lewis is a decent guy, and Roman a solid guy if needed. Overall, a solid group.
DB Score: 8/10
Special Teams
K: Joe Nedney
P: Andy Lee
KR: Maurice Hicks, Brandon Williams
Nedney is a solid kicker. Not great, not bad, but solid. Lee had success last year as the punter. Hicks is an alright kickoff returner, and Williams is a decent punt returner. Decent group
ST Score: 7/10
Coaches
Head Coach: Mike Nolan
O. Coordinator: Jim Hostler
D. Coordinator: Greg Manusky
The 49ers have gotten better in Nolan's two seasons, so far he's done a solid job. Hostler is new to the coordinator slot, previously spending as their QB coach. Manusky is also a new coordinator, he was formerly the Chargers LB coach. Decent group.
Coach Score: 3/5
