Welcome to the next installment of "MrNFL's prediction system previews." On these posts, we will look at an NFL team, and grade them at different positions to figure out what record each team will get. For a full explanation on how the system works, click here.
Today we look at the Kansas City Chiefs
LAST SEASON: The Chiefs found their way in to the playoffs with a 9-7 record.
Quarterbacks/Wide Receivers
QB's: Damon Huard, Brodie Croyle, Casey Printers, Omar Jacobs
WR's: Eddie Kennison, Dwayne Bowe, Samie Parker, Rod Gardner, Chris Hannon, Jeff Webb
Huard had great success last year, but the question is; is he for real? The 2nd year Croyle is likely not ready yet for the starting job. They lack a legit #1 receiver. Kennison is a #2 guy at best, Parker is really the best for a slot, and we'll find out how the rookie Bowe fits it. Even if he's great, I don't see him being the guy yet. Average group.
QB/WR score: 7/10
Running Backs/Tight Ends
HB's: Larry Johnson, Priest Holmes, Michael Bennett, Kolby Smith, Derrick Ross
FB's: Greg Hanoian,
TE's: Tony Gonzalez, Jason Dunn, Kris Wilson, Keith Willis, Michael Allan
Right now, Larry Johnson is being an idiot and holding out of camp. This can only hurt. He's a guy who can be given the ball a million times and not break down. (Yet) Holmes is trying to make it back, but even if he can, most likely he isn't what he once was. Bennett is a decent speedy alternative to the big LJ. They really don't have a real fullback. Gonzalez is still one of the best receiving tight ends in the game, and Wilson and Dunn aren't bad tight ends either. A solid group.
RB/TE Score: 8/10
Offensive Line
T's: John Welbourn, Kevin Sampson, Damion McIntosh, Kyle Turley, Chris Terry, Will Svitek, Herbert Taylor,
G's: Brian Waters, Chris Bober, Tre Stallings, Rob Hunt
C's: Casey Wiegmann, Rudy Niswanger, Jean-Phillipe Darche
Welborun is solid when healthy, but seems to get hurt each year. McIntosh is a decent addition, but he's average at best. Sampson is also decent at best, and Turley's back issues keep him from success. Waters is a very good guard, but without Shields, his production may drop. Bober isn't a great option for the other guard slot. They are set at center with Wiegmann. Overall, a good amount of flaws here.
OL Score: 7/10
Defensive Line
DT's: Alfonso Boone, James Reed, Turk McBride, Tank Tyler, Ron Edwards, Kiki Gonzalez
DE's: Tamba Hali, Jared Allen, Jimmy Wilkerson, Montez Murphy
Reed and Boone are both average at best defensive tackles, and the next best options are both rookies. Despite the questions inside, they have some good ends. The young Hali is a very good pass rusher, and Allen is pretty good as well when he isn't drunk. Even with the upside at the ends, the downside in the middle scores them a 7.
DL Score: 7/10
Linebackers
LB's: Donnie Edwards, Derrick Johnson, Napoleon Harris, Kendrell Bell, Keyaron Fox, Rich Scanlon, William Kershaw, Boomer Grigsby
Edwards was a great pickup, as he is a very good inside linebacker, and he knows the division well being a former Charger. Johnson is a solid young linebacker. Harris, Bell, and Fox are all decent linebackers who could start. Overall a pretty good group here.
LB Score: 9/10
Defensive Backs
CB's: Ty Law, Patrick Surtain, Benny Sapp, Will Poole, Justin Phinisee, Dimitri Patterson, Marcus Maxey, Michael Bragg
S's: Greg Wesley, Bernard Pollard, Jarrad Page, Jon McGraw, Chad Williams
Despite his age, Law is still a very good corner, and Surtain is a solid #2 corner. Sapp is an average #3 corner. The rest of the guys for the most part are unproven. Wesley is a serviceable safety. The other spot is a bit of a concern, as none of these are proven starters. Not a bad group, and they just get an 8.
DB Score: 8/10
Special Teams
K: Justin Medlock
P: Dustin Colquitt
KR: Eddie Kennison?
Medlock is a rookie, and although he was successful at UCLA, rookie kickers tend to have a few issues early. Colquitt is a pretty good punter. With Dante Hall gone, I'm honestly not sure who they have to return kicks and punts. Regardless, the group gets a 7.
ST Score: 7/10
Coaches
Head Coach: Herm Edwards
O. Coordinator: Mike Solari
D. Coordinator: Gunther Cunningham
Edwards has been an inconsistent coach, as he's had playoff seasons, but then a bad season, and back to the playoffs and such. Solari is a second year coordinator for them. Cunningham is a 4th year defensive coordinator for them.
Coach score: 3/5
