Welcome to the next installment of "MrNFL's prediction system previews." On these posts, we will look at an NFL team, and grade them at different positions to figure out what record each team will get. For a full explanation on how the system works, click here.
Today we start the AFC and look at the Cleveland Browns.
LAST SEASON: The Browns had another Browns-like year, finishing a dismal 4-12.
Quarterbacks/Wide Receivers
QB's: Brady Quinn, Charlie Frye, Ken Dorsey, Derek Anderson
WR's: Braylon Edwards, Joe Jurevicius, Tim Carter, Joshua Cribbs, Efrem Hill, Maurice Mann, Travis Wilson, Steve Sanders, Syndric Steptoe
Although Quinn has a lot of hype around him, he is still a rookie and can only do so much. Even if he doesn't start, Frye is average at best. Edwards is improving, but still isn't a real #1 yet. Jurevicius is a very average #2 guy. Carter is a decent #3 guy, but this group has a lot of issues.
QB/WR Score: 6/10
Running Backs/Tight Ends
HB's: Jamal Lewis, Jerome Harrison, Jason Wright, J.R. Niklos, Chris Barclay
FB's: Lawrence Vickers
TE's: Kellen Winslow, Steve Heiden, Darnell Dinkins, Ryan Krause, Buck Ortega
Lewis is an alright back. He'll give them carries and a bit of a power threat, but he's not going to give them probably any better than 3.5 a run. Harrison and Wright both aren't much, and Vickers is an unproven fullback. Tight end they are better at, as Winslow is a great receiver. Heiden is a solid all around guy as well. They barely get a 7, just for tight end depth.
RB/TE Score: 7/10
Offensive Line
T's: Joe Thomas, Kevin Shaffer, Nat Dorsey, Kelly Butler, Ryan Tucker, Pete Lougheed
G's: Eric Steinbach, Fred Matua, Lennie Friedman, Rob Smith, Isaac Sowells,
C's: LeCharles Bentley, Hank Fraley, Seth McKinney, Ryan Pontbriand
Joe Thomas was a great choice, and should have success. However, the fact that he is stupid enough to be considering a holdout is very bad for the Browns. Shaffer is a decent guy to be the other tackle. Steinbach had great success with Cincy, and was a great pickup, but you wonder how much of his success was due to be surrounded by a great line. He'll have a lot more pressure on him. The other guard spot is a big hole, and there is no telling who fills that hole. If Bentley is healthy, he can be great, but he may not be ready to play. If so, Fraley is solid. There is potential for success here but also a ton of questions, and I'm not sure I can give higher than a 7.
OL Score: 7/10
Defensive Line
DT's: Ted Washington, Orpheus Roye, Shaun Smith, Alvin Smith, Orien Harris, Babatunde Oshinowo, Ethan Kelley, J'vonne Parker, Andrew Hoffman
DE's: Robaire Smith, Simon Frasier, Antwan Peek, Chase Pittman, Mel Purcell
Washington is really old, but is still freaking gigantic, and still a great clogger in the 3-4. Roye and Robaire are both big average ends, neither is really a great run stopper or pass rusher. Frasier is decent, but this line has no one who can rush the passer at all. They aren't that special of run stoppers either. Even with big Ted, the rest is so bad that I can't give better than a 6.
DL Score: 6/10
Linebackers
LB's: Kamerion Wimbley, Andra Davis, Willie McGinest, Chaun Thompson, Matt Stewart, D'Qwell Jackson, Leon Williams, Kris Griffin, David McMillan, Jason Short, Clifton Smith, Mason Unck
Wimbley is young and should improve. He's already a great pass rusher. Davis is a solid inside man, and Jackson had a good rookie year. If he improves inside, that will be a big lift. McGinest is old, but still is a decent player and provides leadership. Thompson and Stewart are both decent guys to rotate in and out. Overall, a pretty good group.
LB Score: 8/10
Defensive Backs
CB's: Gary Baxter, Daven Holly, Eric Wright, Kenny Wright, Leigh Bodden, Jereme Perry, DeMario Minter, Therrian Fontenot, Brandon McDonald
S's: Brodney Pool, Sean Jones, Mike Adams, Jeremy LeSuere, Justin Hamilton, Justin Sandy
It's unknown if Baxter will even play this upcoming year, as he tore both his knees last year. Even if he does, it's doubtful he'll be at his previous skill level. Holly had a decent year last season, but he really isn't ready to be a legit starter. Bodden is not bad, and K. Wright is average, leaving the 2nd rounder E. Wright to probably be the #3 guy. Jones had a solid year last season at safety. Pool and Adams are both decent guys for the other spot. The many questions at corner kills this score.
DB Score: 7/10
Special Teams
K: Phil Dawson
P: Dave Zastudil
KR: Joshua Cribbs
Dawson can have accuracy issues. He's also low on leg strength, and won't do many 50+'s. Zastudil is a solid punter, he has power and accuracy. Cribbs is a very good young kick returner, and with Northcutt gone, he'll likely assume the punt duties. Solid group.
ST Score: 8/10
Coaches
Head Coach: Romeo Crennel
O. Coordinator: Rob Chudzinski
D. Coordinator: Todd Grantham
Crennel has yet to have success as a head coach, and you've got to wonder how quickly he's running out of time. Chudzinski was formerly a SD TE coach, and was with Cleveland for a short time as well. Grantham is a decent coordinator in his 3rd year. Overall, a decent group, barely a 3.
Coach score: 3/5
