NFL "Prediction System" preview: Detroit Lions
READ MORE:

Lions logoWelcome to the first installment of "MrNFL's prediction system previews."  On these posts, we will look at an NFL team, and grade them at different positions to figure out what record each team will get.  For a full explanation on how the system works, click here

Today's team?  The Detroit Lions.

LAST SEASON: It was another bad season for the Lions.  They finished 3-13, the worst record in the NFC, and with the 2nd overall draft pick.  The most wins this team has won in the last 6 years was 6 games.

Quarterbacks/Wide Receivers

QB's: Jon Kitna, Drew Stanton, Dan Orvlovsky
WR's: Calvin Johsnon, Roy Williams, Mike Furrey, Shaun McDonald, Marcus Robinson, Cliff Russell, Edell Sheppard, Devale Ellis, Eddie Drummond, Kevin Kasper

Although the Lions had many struggles last season, the passing game was somewhat successful.  Despite the many past wide receiver busts, they have one that panned out in Roy Williams, and hope to have another one pan out in draft choice Calvin Johnson.  Furrey and McDonald will both be very good options in the slot with the other two getting tons of attention.

Jon Kitna isn't a horrible QB, he can succeed if he has success around him.  However, if the running game struggles like last year, he can become erratic.  They drafted Stanton, who I think can be solid.  The tremendous upside at WR gives them a solid score.

QB/WR Score: 8/10

Next, the Running backs/Fullbacks/Tight Ends

RB's: Kevin Jones, Tatum Bell, T.J. Duckett, Brian Calhoun, Shawn Bryson, Aveion Cason

TE's: Dan Campbell, Casey Fitzsimmons, Sean McHugh, Darnell Sanders

Last year, injuries were the demise of the running game.  They got rid of longtime fullback Schlesinger, so they have no FB.  They brought in a speedster in Tatum Bell, and a beefy Duckett.  Jones is a bit inconsistent, but has some promise.  Calhoun's fast, but still young.  Bryson...he sucks.  Maybe they think that Bell and Duckett can become as successful as Duckett was combined with Warrick Dunn, but I'm still not sure here.

As far as the tight ends, Campbell is a solid two-way TE.  Fitzsimmons is decent.  Overall, still too many question marks for me with this unit.

RB/TE score: 6/10

Offensive Line

T's: Jeff Backus, George Foster, Jonathan Scott, Clint Stockdorn
G's: Edwin Mulitalo, Rex Tucker, Damien Woody, Barry Stokes, Ben Noll, Manuel Ramirez, Stephen Peterman, Blaine Saipaia, Frank Davis

C's: Dominic Raiola, Dave Pearson, Don Muhlbach

Offensive line woes did in the offense last year for the Lions.  Injuries hurt them a ton.  Jeff Backus is a solid tackle, but the other side is still in question.  George Foster is a decent starter, but I think he's more of a system guy.  Scott is a 2nd year guy, and may still not be ready.

Mulitalo missed most of last year with the Ravens to injury, but if he is healthy, he makes a large impact.  If Damien Woody can stay healthy as well.  Drafting Ramirez helps the depth, but these guys have to stay healthy.  They are fine at center, Raiola is solid.

This group could be good, but having to rely on guys off of injuries hurts their score a bit.  Still having average depth, I can give them a 7 at best.

OL score: 7/10

Defensive Line

DT's: Shaun Rogers, Cory Redding, Shaun Cody, Langston Moore, Cleveland Pinkney

DE's: Kalimba Edwards, Dewayne White, Ikaila Alama-Francis, Jared DeVries, Claude Harriot, Corey Smith, Bill Swancutt

If Shaun Rogers can avoid injuries and roids, he's a big man who can clog the line inside.  Redding is a pretty good player as well, and although he wants out, he can be solid.  They are banking big on Dewayne White becoming a star.  I think he'll be productive, but nothing special.  Edwards is decent, but I really like the pick of Alama-Francis, and I expect him to have success.  Overall, a solid group, just good enough for an 8.

DL Score: 8/10

Linebackers

LB's:
Boss Bailey, Ernie Sims, Teddy Lehman, Donte' Curry, Paris Lenon, Alex Lewis, Johnny Baldwin, Anthony Cannon

Ernie Sims is a beast, and I think this year he becomes the stud the Lions want.  The rest of the group is a bit of a concern.  Bailey in his first year back from injury was average at best.  Lehman can't stay healthy, Lenon and Lewis are both mediocre.  This is going to kill this defense, and as much as I like Sims, I can't give this group many points.

LB Score: 6/10

Secondary

CB's: Fernando Bryant, Travis Fisher, Stanley Wilson, Ike Charlton, Tony Beckham, A. J. Davis, Keith Smith, Dee McCann, Ramzee Robinson
S's: Daniel Bullocks, Idrees Bashir, Kenoy Kennedy, Etric Pruitt, Gerald Alexander

Lot of concern for the Lions here.  Fernando Bryant is too inconsistent and injury prone to be your number one CB.  Fisher was a decent pickup, but he's nothing too great.  The rest of their corners are pretty bad, and the only guy with any promise seems to be 4th rounder Davis.

They are a bit better at safety.  Bullocks showed some promise last year, and they drafted Alexander in the 2nd round.  Kennedy when healthy is solid, and Bashir is a decent backup.  The safeties can't make up for the lack of corners, a 6 at best.

DB score: 5/10

Special Teams

K: Jason Hanson
P: Nick Harris
KR: Eddie Drummond

Hanson's age (He's been a Lion since 92...poor guy) has hurt him on the long kicks, but he is still very solid from inside 50.  Harris has improved the last 3 years, and is serviceable.  Drummond has fallen off a bit, he hasn't gotten a TD in 2 years, however he's still solid.  Overall, a solid group.

ST Score: 7/10

Coaches

Head Coach: Rod Marinelli
O. Coordinator: Mike Martz
D. Coordinator: Joe Barry

It is probably too early to judge Marinelli on one season, which wasn't likely all his fault.  However, he deserves some of the blame.  He brought over son-in-law Joe Barry over as the new D coordinator.  Barry is another former Tampa coach, he was the LB specialist, and perhaps he can turn Ernie Sims into the next Derrick Brooks.  We all know Martz, a solid coordinator...but he passes too much.  Overall, a decent group.

Coach score: 3/5.
