Welcome to the next installment of "MrNFL's prediction system previews." On these posts, we will look at an NFL team, and grade them at different positions to figure out what record each team will get. For a full explanation on how the system works, click here.
Today we finish off the NFC and look at the Seattle Seahawks.
LAST SEASON: After being in the Super Bowl the year before, the Seahawks had an off year, going 9-7 and getting eliminated by the Bears.
Quarterbacks/Wide Receivers
QB's: Matt Hasselbeck, Seneca Wallace, David Greene
WR's: Deion Branch, Nate Burleson, Bobby Engram, D.J. Hackett, Ben Obomanu, Jordan Kent, Courtney Taylor
Hasselbeck had injury issues last year and had an off year as a whole. When healthy, he's solid. They lack a #1 receiver however. Branch is a #2 at best, and Engram at full health is barely a #2. Burleson is vastly over-rated. I can't give them an 8 with these receivers.
QB/WR Score: 7/10
Running Game
HB's: Shaun Alexander, Maurice Morris, Marquis Weeks, Leonard Weaver
FB's: Mack Strong, Josh Parry, David Kirtman
TE's: Marcus Pollard, Will Heller, Bennie Joppru, Derek Rackley, Leonard Stephens
Alexander was average last year, but provided his injury is fully healed, he'll be back to being an elite back. Morris is a solid backup as well. Strong is one of the best blocking fullbacks in the game, probably only second to Lorenzo Neal. Tight end is more of a worry. Pollard is old and not what he once was. The other guys are nothing special at all. The lack at tight end just bumps them short of a 9.
RB/TE Score: 8/10
Offensive Line
T's: Walter Jones, Sean Locklear, Tom Ashworth, Ray Willis, Steve Vallos,
G's: Floyd Womack, Chris Gray, Rob Sims, Jason Murphy, Mansfield Wrotto
C's: Chris Spencer, Austin King, Pat Ross
Jones may be the best tackle in all of the game. Gray is old, but still a very good starting guard. Spencer has a few injury concerns, but if healthy will successfully move into the starting center role. Womack is good when healthy, but he's been injury more often than not recently. Locklear also missed time last year, but is solid when healthy. The other guard slot is more of a concern, Ashworth may be the first backup. Overall a pretty good group though, just enough for an 8.
OL Score: 8/10
Defensive Line
DT's: Rocky Bernard, Marcus Tubbs, Chuck Darby, Russell Davis, Marcus Green, Craig Terrell, Brandon Mebane
DE's: Patrick Kerney, Bryce Fisher, Eric Taylor, Darryl Tapp, Baraka Atkins, Brandon Green
Bernard and Darby are both average defensive tackles. Tubbs has yet to have real success, and now he's hurt. Davis is decent at best. They really don't have any great tackles. Although Kerney is a solid add, he's not the force he once was. Fisher and Tapp are both average at best. This line is not in good shape.
DL Score: 6/10
Linebackers
LB's: Julian Peterson, Lofa Tatupu, LeRoy Hill, Niko Koutovides, Kevin Bentley, Marquis Cooper, Will Herring, Lance Laury
Tatupu is a very good young middle linebacker, and he should only get better. Peterson is a very good pass rushing outside backer. Hill is also solid outside as well, and he is young and should improve. Overall, a very good group.
LB Score: 9/10
Defensive Backs
CB's: Marcus Trufant, Kelly Jennings, Jordan Babineaux, Josh Wilson, Pete Hunter, Rich Gardner, Dennis Davis, Gerard Ross, Kevin Hobbs
S's: Michael Boulware, Deon Grant, Brian Russell, Mike Green
Trufant is a solid corner, but may be better suited as a #2 guy than a #1. Jennings had a solid rookie year, and should be solid as the #2. With a bit of a hole in the other spots, the safety Babineaux may become the #3 corner, with the 2nd rounder Wilson behind him. Boulware is not bad, but is inconsistent. Grant is a solid pickup, and Russell is decent. Decent, but flawed group.
DB Score: 7/10
Special Teams
K: Josh Brown
P: Ryan Plackemeier
KR: Nate Burleson
Brown is a solid kicker. He's not outstanding, but he will get the job done. The rookie Plackemeier had a great first year, and is a very strong legged punter. Burleson is a solid kickoff and punt returner. Solid group.
ST Score: 8/10
Coaches
Head Coach: Mike Holmgren
O. Coordinator: Gil Haskell
D. Coordinator: John Marshall
Holmgren is one of the better coaches in the game. Haskell is a pretty good offensive coordinator. Marshall will be going into his 2nd year as coordinator, after taking over for Ray Rhodes who had health issues. However, Rhodes is still there as a special consultant, and they also added Jim Mora. Very good coaching staffs.
Coach score: 5/5
