Welcome to the next installment of "MrNFL's prediction system previews." On these posts, we will look at an NFL team, and grade them at different positions to figure out what record each team will get. For a full explanation on how the system works, click here.
Today we look at the Tennessee Titans
LAST SEASON: After a bad 2005 that only earned 4 wins, the Titans turned it around, winning 8 games.
Quarterbacks/Wide Receivers
QB's: Vince Young, Tim Rattay, Kerry Collins
WR's: David Givens, Justin Gage, Courtney Roby, Roydell Williams, Paul Williams, Brandon Jones, Joel Filani, Chris Davis, Jonathan Orr
Young's running ability provides an interesting dynamic, but from a passing standpoint, he was mediocre, and even in his second year, it will be hard to do anything with the receivers he has. Givens has never been a #1 guy, and he's coming off of missing almost a whole season. Jones is likely the #2 guy, and he wouldn't even make the slot on most teams. Gage, Roby, Williams and Orr are all below average, and how much can you put on the rookies? Young's running ability barely gets this group a 6.
QB/WR score: 6/10
Running Backs/Tight Ends
HB's: Chris Brown, LenDale White, Chris Henry, Quinton Ganther
FB's: Ahmard Hall
TE's: Ben Troupe, Bo Scaife, Ben Hartsock, Casey Cramer, Jamie Petrowski, Cooper Wallace
Chris Brown can never stay healthy, and when he is, he's not anything special. White has some potential, but isn't feature back material yet. They will need the rookie Henry to step up quickly, and I don't see him being that great right away. Hall's a decent fullback. Sciafe isn't a bad receivng tight end, Troupe is decent, and Hartsock is an alright blocker. A lot of questions here as well, and I can't give them a 7.
RB/TE Score: 6/10
Offensive Line
T's: Michael Roos, Seth Wand, Daniel Loper, David Stewart, Marques Ogden, Mike Otto
G's: Jacob Bell, Benji Olson, Isaac Snell, Justin Geisinger
C's: Kevin Mawae, Eugene Amano, Leroy Harris
Roos is a pretty good young tackle, and he's still improving. The other tackle spot is a bit of a question, and although Stewart started most of the year there, he had his flaws in his first year starting. Bell and Olson are both pretty good guards, and Mawae is still one of the games' better centers. Solid line overall
OL Score: 8/10
Defensive Line
DT's: Albert Haynesworth, Rien Long, Randy Starks, Tony Brown, Jesse Mahelona, Antonio Johnson
DE's: Kyle Vanden Bosch, Antwan Odom, Travis LaBoy, Josh Savage, Sean Conover, Jacob Ford, Nathaniel Adibi
When Haynesworth isn't stomping on peoples' heads, he's a solid defensive tackle. Starks and Brown aren't bad, but aren't great either. Long could be a good #2 if he is healed from his staph infection that caused him to miss last year. Vanden Bosch is a pretty good end who is under-rated. However he lacks someone on the other side, as Odom and LaBoy are both decent at best. Decent group, but not quite worthy of an 8.
DL Score: 7/10
Linebackers
LB's: Keith Bulluck, David Thornton, Stephen Tulloch, LeVar Woods, Gilbert Gardner, Terna Nande, Ryan Fowler, Robert Reynolds, Spencer Toone
Bulluck is often overlooked, but he is one of the NFL's best linebackers. Thornton is pretty good as well. The issue is the other spot. The young Tulloch isn't bad, but may not be ready. Gardner was a flop in Indy, and he probably isn't starter worthy. None of the other guys have proven that they are worthy of being a starter. However, the upside from Bulluck and Thornton still gets this group an 8.
LB Score: 8/10
Defensive Backs
CB's: Nick Harper, Kelly Herndon, Reynaldo Hill, Cortland Finnegan, Andre Woolfolk, Eric King, Michael Waddell, Ryan Smith
S's: Chris Hope, Michael Griffin, Bryan Scott, Lamont Thompson, Donnie Nickey, Calvin Lowry, Vincent Fuller
Harper and Herndon are both good pick ups by the Titans, as both guys can start. Neither is really an ideal #1 guy, but both have #2 guy talent. The young Finnegan had a solid season last year, and will probably battle with Hall to be the nickel guy. Both are solid though. Hope had a great year last year and is a great safety. Thompson isn't a bad guy for the other slot, but the 1st rounder Griffin may start. They've made a lot of improvements to this secondary, and fall just short of a 9.
DB Score: 8/10
Special Teams
K: Rob Bironas
P: Craig Hentrich
KR: Courtney Roby?
Bironas is a decent kicker. He has a strong leg, but his accuracy at times is questionable. Hentrich is a solid veteran punter. There is a question as to who will do the returning, as Wade is gone and Jones is suspended. Roby may be the one to take the spots, as he did kickoffs in 2005. He's solid.
ST Score: 7/10
Coaches
Head Coach: Jeff Fisher
O. Coordinator: Norm Chow
D. Coordinator: Jim Schwartz
Fisher has had success in his career in Tennessee, he's a solid coach. Chow is a second year coordinator for them, and isn't bad. Schwartz has been their coordinator for a while. Overall a pretty good coaching staff.
Coach score: 4/5
