Lost in the shuffle of college football was that yesterday was the deadline for NFL teams to trim their rosters to 53 players. Obviously, a lot of no-names were cut, but there were some known players among the casualties. However, the most surprising move wasn't a cut, but an injury. Patriots' defensive tackle Richard Seymour was put on the Physically Unable to Perform List (PUP). Thus, Seymour will definitely be out the first six games, creating a big hole in the center of the Pats' D.
Thanks to Scout.com, all the cuts have been put in the same place. Some of the highlights:
Ravens: The news here is who wasn't cut, former Ohio State QB Troy Smith. He'll be the third-string quarterback behind McNair and Kyle Boller.
Bears: Smith's foil in the national title game, Florida QB Chris Leak wasn't so lucky. Leak felt the ax fall on Saturday.
Browns: Not surprisingly, Ken Dorsey was the odd man out in the Browns' QB "battle." The lesson: winning a national title does not guarantee NFL success.
Cowboys: Longtime cornerback Aaron Glenn was cut, while Miss Gramatica was placed on IR.
Lions: Mr. Irrelevant Ramzee Robinson proved to be irrelevant, as the terrible Lions have let him go.
Packers: Mason Crosby has beaten out Dave Raynor for the kicking job. Take note for your fantasy teams. Also, Marquand Manuel was cut in another case of free agency gone bad.
Texans: Keenan McCardell, Wali Lundy, Bethel Johnson, Tyrone Poole, Chad Stanley, and Dexter McCleon were all cut, and for all, it looks like the end of the line for their NFL careers. Rookies cut include Boise State hero Jared Zabransky and former Notre Dame RB Darius Walker.
Jaguars: Byron Leftwich was cut, as was expected.
Chiefs: Priest Holmes was put on the Reserved/Non-Football Injury list. This is similar to the PUP list, so Holmes will not be eligible to return until after the first six games.
Dolphins: Az Hakim and Cory Schlesinger have had long careers, but that's likely over after not making the Dolphins.
Vikings: Sorry, Ryan, but Tyler Thigpen has been cut. Also gone was former fantasy deep sleeper Ciatrick Fason.
Patriots: In addition to Seymour, the Pats mercifully released Vinny Testaverde. Matt Cassell should now be their kneel-down specialist.
Saints: Dancin' Dhani Jones can dance into the sunset now, as he is unwanted in New Orleans.
Giants: Jared Lorenzen beat out Tim Hasselbeck for the 3rd string QB job. I think that's something we can all get behind.
Jets: Kimo von Oelhoffen was a big free agent signing for the Jets before 2006. However, he never fit in Eric Mangini's system, and now his tenure with the Jets is over. Also (likely) over is Andre Wadsworth's comeback attempt.
Raiders: Classic Raiders. They cut a third and fifth round pick from this year's draft, and placed fourth rounder Michael Bush on the PUP list. They now don't have their first, third, fourth, and fifth round picks from this year's draft.
Eagles: Jeremy Bloom can go back to skiing, as he has been released. Also, Dirk Johnson has lost the punting job to former Aussie Rules player Sav Rocca. Rocca will lay someone out this year, mark my words. The Eagles also signed the aforementioned von Oelhoffen.
Seahawks: Seattle lost DT Marcus Tubbs for the season with an ACL tear, a huge loss for their defense. In response, they traded S Michael Boulware to the Texans for bust DE Jason Babin. Seems like a panic move to me. They also traded for RB Alvin Pearman for some reason.
Bucs: Veteran linebacker Jamie Winborn was cut, as was fourth round CB Alan Zemaitis of Penn State.
Redskins: What a shock, the Skins released some old guys. This year it was Renaldo Wynn and Omar Stoutmire. Also gone is Carson's little brother, Jordan Palmer.
It should be interesting to see how many of these guys get picked up by other teams, and which team's trash is another team's treasure.
