NFL Scores: Randy Moss is Still Catching Tom Brady Passes and The Rest of Sunday Afternoon Action
9/10/07

You can look further down the blog for some recaps on today's bigger stories in earlier action. For those games I didn't touch on, here are some lingering thoughts. Plenty more reaction tomorrow and on Tuesday when Week 1 is officially in the books.

Patriots 38, Jets 14
Ok, so if Randy Moss is going to look this healthy again then I need to re-evaluate some predictions. This is scary. He beat triple team coverage which can't be done with a hamstring injury. Moss is officially healthy; and the rest of the NFL is officially on notice. Bill Belichick and the Patriots made an impressive opening statement.

Just disappointment on the Jets side of the ball. You can't give Tom Brady, let alone Charlie Frye, that kind of time and expect to win. Even the Jets' fans were a disappointment, albeit amusing, in booing Chad Pennington when he was injured despite having a decent game.

Texans 20, Chiefs 3
I didn't spend a whole lot of time watching this game for obvious reasons, but all the preseason concern about the Chiefs is now a reality. They were bad today. Really bad. Not even Kelli Croyle's hard knockers could pick this team up. I wouldn't completely give up on KC, they'll still remain competitive but that was as bad a start as there was in the NFL on Sunday.

Steelers 34, Browns 7
It was only Cleveland, but Pittsburgh didn't even let the Browns have a chance which is what all good teams should do. Game 1 of proving last year was the fluke and not the previous. Roethlisberger threw 4 touchdowns and 0 interceptions and hardly threw a pass in the second half. Good start for Big Ben, we'll see how the new offense works against an actual NFL team.

Panthers 27, Rams 13
Someone tried to talk me into St. Louis being the best offense in the NFC. Still not convinced. This was one of the many Week 1 shockers. Not necessarily who won, but how they won. 14-point win on the road against a team expected to step it up a notch. Steven Jackson and his big preseason talk accounted for just 58 yards rushing. Steve Smith had another big day. I don't know that I'd trade him for any other wide receiver.

Titans 13, Jags 10
Raise your hand if you thought Chris Brown would rush for more than 50 yards today. Brown rushed for 175 yards, the Titans 282. You don't lose many games with a total like that. Say what you will about Vince Young, but so far he's proven a winner. The best looking guy on the field, however, was Jack Del Rio. More coaches should wear suits. Looks sharp.

Redskins 16, Dolphins 13
Tried to watch one full series of this game, but it pained me so. I don't think we can draw any conclusions on these two teams until after next week. Neither impressed. Washington did show it's running ability and found a way to win, almost in spectacular fashion. If Randle El gets in on that Hail Mary that's one of the all time greatest NFL plays.

Seahawks 20, Bucs 6
Yawn. Ok, fine. Shaun Alexander looked healthy and that's about all I can add here.

Lions 36, Raiders 21
Michigan sports fans NEEDED this. With the embarrassment that is the University of Michigan football and the Tigers allergic reaction to the MLB playoffs this season and Lions win was what the doctor ordered. While Detroit was giving away an early lead I truly started feeling bad for my friends back home. Luckily, the Raiders are still the Raiders and Josh McCown couldn't go through a full game without throwing it away. We'll reserve judgment on both these two until after next week.

The Titans were losing 3 out of 4 games for a long stretch. Then VY went under center and it's been the opposite. Just sayin'.
Obviously, I don't need to remind you of Tennessee's D and Travis Henry both stepping up.

VY wasn't that good yesterday anyway.  11-18, 87 yards, a INT, a fumble, and only 22 rushing yards.  That's almost Grossman-esque.
