NFL Season Ending Power Rankings

Who's The Hottest Team Heading Into The Playoffs? [NFL Power Rankings]

1/4/10 in NFL   |   Pat   |   5232 respect

The Colts almost made it to the end of the year in the #1 spot, but the Chargers' recent performance has just been too good to ignore. Heading into the playoffs, they and the much-maligned Cowboys are playing the best football in the league. Here are the final rankings of the year:

Group 1: The Playoff Teams

1. Chargers, 13-3, Last week: 2
The Chargers are heading into the playoffs exactly the way that any team would want to. They're as healthy as anyone, and they're on an 11-game winning streak.

2. Cowboys, 11-5, Last week: 5
They have taken a lot of heat for their December history, but with their last 3 wins, they've looked better than any team in the league. Could this be the year they get a playoff win?

3. Colts, 14-2, Last week: 1
They looked good throughout the year, but the way they gave up in the last couple weeks is definitely not what you want to see from this team. Three straight weeks without much game experience for Manning and his WR's? Bad news.

4. Saints, 13-3, Last week: 3
I don't know what happened to the Saints. Supposedly they were still trying to win, at least against the Buccaneers, but the Saints need to work hard in their bye week to try to find their momentum again.

5. Vikings, 12-4, Last week: 6
They got their first round bye, but will it be enough for Brett Favre to be back to his early season form? I hate to be Captain Obvious here, but the guy's getting old.

6. Packers, 11-5, Last week: 10
They get the Cardinals again, a week after blowing them out. But how different will it be when they have to deal with Kurt Warner?

7. Eagles, 11-5, Last week: 4
They needed to pick up the win against the Cowboys yesterday. And they looked awful. Time for the rematch in Dallas. I don't like Philly's chances as much anymore.

8. Cardinals, 10-6, Last week: 8
They are actually looking similar to how they looked last year, when they ended up in the Super Bowl. Could lightning strike twice? It wouldn't surprise me... stranger things have happened.

9. Patriots, 10-6, Last week: 9
The Wes Welker injury hurts, but I think they'll still be able to beat the Ravens at home. It's the second round on the road that they'll have to worry about. And I don't think they were going to win in San Diego anyway.

10. Bengals, 10-6, Last week: 7
The bad news: The Jets embarrassed them this week, and Ochocinco might be a little banged up. The good news: They showed the Jets absolutely nothing, since they tanked. They should be alright.

11. Jets, 9-7, Last week: 11
They finished strong, but if you have confidence in the abilities of rookie QB Mark Sanchez, then I've got several bridges that I can sell you.

12. Ravens, 9-7, Last week: 12
The Ravens get another chance to play the Patriots, and avenge their loss from earlier this season. Unfortunately for them, the Patriots are dominant at home.

Group 2: The Average Teams

13. Atlanta, 9-7, Last week: 15
14. Texans, 9-7, Last week: 16
15. Steelers, 9-7, Last week: 14
16. Titans, 8-8, Last week: 20
17. Panthers, 8-8, Last week: 22
18. 49ers, 8-8, Last week: 21
19. Giants, 8-8, Last week: 19
20. Broncos, 8-8, Last week: 13
21. Jaguars, 7-9, Last week: 17
22. Dolphins, 7-9, Last week: 18
23. Bears, 7-9, Last week: 23
24. Browns, 5-11, Last week: 24
25. Raiders, 5-11, Last week: 25
26. Bills, 6-10, Last week: 27
27. Seahawks, 5-11, Last week: 26
Group 3: The Worst of the Worst

28. Redskins, 4-12, Last week: 28
Jim Zorn is gone, and it's time to see if Mike Shanahan can turn this franchise around. As long as Dan Snyder keeps his hands out of things, and just keeps pumping in his money, they should be fine.

29. Chiefs, 4-12, Last week: 29
Matt Cassel's first year with the Chiefs didn't go as well as he had probably hoped, but the good news is that Jamaal Charles looks pretty damn good.

30. Buccaneers, 3-13, Last week: 30
The Bucs have some potential on offense if they can shore up their line. But their great teams in the past were built on defense. That's where they need to become elite again.

31. Lions, 2-14, Last week: 31
Congratulations to the Lions, who increased their win total by 2 from last season. At this pace, they'll be 16-0 in 2016. Or maybe they'll start working their way back to 0-16. That would be way more fun.

32. Rams, 1-15, Last week: 32
The Rams won... the race for the #1 overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, that is. Ndamukong Suh would be a hell of an addition to this team. Build from the trenches. Write that down.

I am a homer for the Pats, and I've been saying all year that the AFC team to beat is San Diego.  Its just a question of which team shuts down the Colts.  Sure would laugh if it was the Bengals (or better yet, the Jets).

The Colts are still alive, but the Patriots and the Chargers are not. I'm sure that you are now rooting for the Jets. Good luck with that.

I dont think anybody wants it with The Chargers right now. Philip Rivers just might be cocky enough for the whole team..and remember cocky becomes swagger if you make it to the Super Bowl

Sidenote: They will not win or make it to the Super Bowl of course because The Colts will.

It's either Tennessee's Berry or Okie St.'s Okung, which one should be there by even the 5th or 6th if they so choose to trade down for less money. I'm much more happier watching a current football team that looks like they might have a future with a dominating performance in Denver than worrying about a draft order that could've only moved one spot.

Dude, you really do need to lighten up. My post was a joke. I love seeing the Chiefs kick the s*@t out of Denver any time. As for telling others to grow up at the tender age of 20, well you have quite alot to do yourself. Most fans when refering to team sports use "we" in their vernacular. If you want to joke others ( the original "we" guy), you should probably learn to reckognized others jokes (mine, for instance.) But thanks for the unneccessary lesson on Draft 101.

Excuse me? A few things: 1) Learn how to spell - it's Chiefs, not cheifs, and in the other thread; it's Boise, not bosie. 2) Try watching others have a civil conversation so you could possibly learn how to be just that, "civil". 3) I'm completely fine with the "your team" or "my team" logic, but the "WE" term, to me, is completely illogical.

What have you done to be a part of that team? Has any of your playcalling made it's way onto the field? Have you made that game-winning catch or game-saving tackle? Did you do any work whatsoever to even make it on to the field with those men to consider their successes, your successes and their failures, your failures?

In my opinion, those that are FANS of a team couldn't possibly mistake that distinction between an actual member of a team and the fandom of a team, but it's just that - an opinion. Did I completely attempt to rip on the guy that said "we" in the first place? No. I simply made a small dig expressing my point of view and also in somewhat a joking matter. Am/Have I ever been "butt hurt" because someone has a different opinion than mine? No.

Grow up.

The Chargers are the team to beat in the AFC. They're hot and (despite their #2 seed) vastly under-rated. I fully expect them to make it to Miami. The Colts are good but the Chargers have momentum and a healthy team. Pats look week, Jets are lucky to even be in the playoffs, Bengals are one-and-done, and the Ravens, well who really knows. I keep forgetting that they're even in the playoffs so maybe they'll end up winning the whole thing.

The NFC is a little less predictable. The Saints have lost their steam against teams they should have smoked. Their offense has also met only one high-quality defense (Dallas) and we all know how that went... Speaking of the Cowboys, they are looking great. Unfortunately Romo has a tendency to disintegrate at inconvenient moments, so we'll see. The Vikes have been inconsistent as of late but if they play their best they're unstoppable, and few of the NFC teams have met a defense as dominant as Minnesota's. GB has no offensive line so if they head to MN or meet Dallas or Philly, I doubt Rodgers will be able to generate much offense.

Chargers vs. Vikes in the Superbowl. Now that's what I call a game.

The Jaguars are at a crucial point with the fans of Jacksonville. The team is not very good, although they have some good players. Head Coach Jack Del Rio still has three years, and $15 million dollars, on his current deal with the Jags, but the team had another losing record, including four straight losses after they were 7-5, and leading the Wild card race. The team has many holes, including big play receivers, and big time defensive players, and they will be facing many more TV balckouts in 2010, regardless of who they draft, and that includes Tim Tebow.

I have a bad feeling that the Eagles just lulled the Cowboys into a false confidence....the Eagles know they can win in Dallas so they had no reason to fear losing this past week. The boys better watch out.

And after criticising last week's placement of the Chargers, this week I agree with you right down the board.  Post season doesn't look anything like I would have guessed even two weeks ago, but I can't wait for it to start.
