NFL Steroid Dealer Found Shot To Death

I Never Knew How Dangerous It Was To Snitch About Steroids
6/5/08
If you follow the NFL at all, then you're probably well aware that a large percentage of its athletes are on something. Naturally because everyone loves football, we more or less look past this. But the NFL had recently begun looking into the issue of steroids in the sport and found David Jacobs, a steroid dealer who had been sentenced to three years of probation on May 1 for a single count of conspiracy to distribute anabolic steroids. He had been cooperating with federal authorities since his arrest last year.
On May 21, Jacobs met with NFL security officials in the Dallas area and gave them names of players he said bought steroids from him, according to his lawyer. The NFL also said they had contacted Jacobs one other time as well.
Today he was found shot to death in his apartment along with his girlfriend. Police wasted no time in saying it is considered a homicide.
ESPN the Magazine senior writer Shaun Assael had been in contact with Jacobs throughout May to try and get Jacobs to speak publicly on which players he gave steroids to, but Jacobs was reticent and nervous about the information he had and the people it implicated.
Eerily, when explaining why he did not want to go public, Jacobs said: "The kinds of people I know about could put a bullet in the back of my head."
Nothing is known about potential suspects at this point, nor is it known if this was something like a simple break-in gone wrong, so speculate all you want.
I'm just still pretty shocked that dealing steroids could possibly get you murdered. But then again, people on steroids are known to do some pretty strange things.
