NFL Super Bowl Open Game Thread

The Har-Bowl is finally here. Which brother takes home the Lombardi? [Super Bowl Live Thread]

2/3/13 in NFL   |   Jess   |   35116 respect

With the media bombardment over the past two weeks, there's not a whole lot I could post here that you haven't heard a thousand times over already. Despite the fact that I have deliberately avoided watching ESPN and NFL Network during the off-time between the conference championship games and the Super Bowl let's see if I can give a little recap of the stories surrounding this game:

Blog Photo - NFL Super Bowl Open Game ThreadTwo brothers are going up against each other on the sidelines of the Super Bowl for the first time in NFL history. John is the nicer brother but he's also considered to be the "dumb one". Ray Lewis is retiring, his first sack was on Jim Harbaugh when Jim was playing QB for the Colts, and he took PED's while he recovered from triceps surgery. Ed Reed may be retiring, or he may simply be leaving the Ravens to finish out his career elsewhere. Joe Flacco is boring. Bernard Pollard is an idiot. Ray Rice should get the ball more. Winning the Super Bowl would top off Michael Oher's feel-good story quite nicely. Torrey Smith is ridiculous - in a good way. Colin Kaepernick is a different kind of QB than we've ever seen in the Super Bowl, and Randy Moss is good but he's an idiot. Did I get it all? I may be missing some Niners stuff.

A few of our regular bloggers have submitted their picks via articles:
Blog Photo - NFL Super Bowl Open Game ThreadAJ_88 picks Baltimore to win 31-27 (he also provided us with a sneak peek of some of the ads we'll be watching.)

Blog Photo - NFL Super Bowl Open Game ThreadMatthew_Shovlin picks San Francisco, 31-27

And if you're confused and don't know who's going to win, or who you even want to win, here's a great guide by GFortier to help.

We have a few picks submitted by some of our users as well...

Blog Photo - NFL Super Bowl Open Game Thread Niners are favored by 4.5 points..but what do the "experts" know! Kaepernick is an outstanding QB but Flacco ain't no slouch either nor is the Rayvens defense. I'm taking the Rayvens...as in "Ray's" last game and he goes out with a bang..wearing his sparkling new SB XLVII ring! Final score: Ravens 38 - Niners 34

Blog Photo - NFL Super Bowl Open Game Thread I am taking the Ravens to win. Why? I think they have the experience it takes to win.....also, because I like rooting for the underdog and because Jess hates the 9'ers!

Blog Photo - NFL Super Bowl Open Game Thread The San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens will be in New Orleans to prove who is the best team in the NFL this year... If I had to pick between these 2 teams, I would pick the Baltimore Ravens who are the 4 or 5-point underdogs in this Superbowl. Experience especially in the playoffs is my main reason why I believe the Ravens will win the Lombardi trophy. On paper, most experts would pick the 49ers because of their stingy defense and Colin Kapernick and the 49ers' explosive offense. Momentum is another reason why I believe the Ravens will win the super bowl this year... They had quality wins over Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos, Tom Brady and the Pats and Andrew Luck and the Colts... So for all the 49er fans that think that the Ravens will be a pushover come superbowl time better think again. If the 49ers were to lose the super bowl, it will be because of their youth which could breed inexperience as far as being in the playoffs and the game of this magnitude which is the super bowl. My Pick: Ravens over 49ers

Blog Photo - NFL Super Bowl Open Game Thread After perusing the teams from top to bottom, factoring in the rotation of the planets, and of course the hotness factor. I take young/kiss my biceps Kaepernick over flabby Flacco. I am a West coast Girl all the way. SF 49'rs win the Super Bowl.

Blog Photo - NFL Super Bowl Open Game Thread The only thing I'm sure is going to happen is that Ray Lewis will be credited with double digit tackles, all of which will occur at least five yards past the line of scrimmage. Overall though, I'm leaning towards San Francisco. They have so many ways they can score points, from running the ball with Gore (aided by a fantastic line), to read options with Kaepernick, to throwing it to Crabtree and Davis. The Ravens did well with Denver and New England's offenses, but the Niners offense has a lot of wrinkles, and as such is difficult to stop. Conversely, the Ravens offense remains based on the deep ball unless Rice gets going again. That, plus Jim Harbaugh being the best coach in the league right now (and a co-owner of an IndyCar team!), means I'll go with the Niners, but it certainly wouldn't shock me if the Ravens won. San Francisco 27, Baltimore 20.

Blog Photo - NFL Super Bowl Open Game Thread Usually I try to be objective when it comes to picking games, but all that is off the table in this game. You have to be impressed with what the Ravens have been able to do in this year's playoffs, everyone is all about Ray Lewis and this could be the emergence of Joe Flacco into the upper echelon of NFL quarterbacks. But its not going to happen. Although I think Baltimore will get out to an early lead, once the nerves settle, Colin Kaepernick and the 49ers will take charge led by their defense making big plays. Throw in what I think will be a huge day for Frank Gore (my MVP pick) and the 49ers will come out on top of this one 27-23. At least they better, I really don't want to see Baltimore win.

Blog Photo - NFL Super Bowl Open Game Thread It's against my religion as a St. Louis Rams fan to openly root for the San Francisco 49ers so you can safely assume I'm taking the Ravens. That said, I have to give credit where credit is due. The San Francisco 49ers are really good and it should be no shock that they are representing the NFC.

On the flip side, I don't think the Ravens as a team are getting the credit they deserve for getting to this point. People seem to forget that Baltimore came within a dropped Lee Evans pass of making it to last year's Super Bowl. This postseason, they exorcised that demon by taking down the evil empire in Foxboro a week after they went into Denver and knocked out a Broncos team that had won 11 straight games.

For me, I see this game as a shootout. The deciding factor is the kicking game and the uncertainty of David Akers in crunch time has to be an uneasy feeling for 49er fans. I see the Ravens getting out early, the 49ers fighting back and then Joe Flacco making some plays late to set up Baltimore for a game winning field goal as time expires.

Ravens 27 - 49ers 24

Blog Photo - NFL Super Bowl Open Game Thread Definitely, I am picking the Baltimore Ravens for the win. I simply cannot, in good conscience, pick the San Francisco 49ers. The next question would be, can the Ravens really win this? Of course they can. The odds are not insurmountable.

They have heart, Michael Oher and Ray Lewis. If you've seen The Blind Side, you have to have a heart. After all, other than Marshall, it is truly one of the best gut wrenching, heart breaking football movies out there. Wouldn't this be perfect for Michael to add a Super Bowl win and ring to the story of his life? Then, as we've read, time and time again, Ray Lewis will hang up his cleats after today's game. He has already completed his final practice as a Baltimore Raven, and love him or hate him, a Super Bowl ring would be the topper on the icing on the celebratory cake of his career.

Now that I've convinced myself the game will be a good one, I'll end up watching it. Besides, I can always put on the 49ers jacket for some bad mojo and jinx them.

Ravens by seven, 38-31.

Jess:
I personally don't particularly want to make a pick, because I have a feeling the Niners are going to win and I really don't want them to.

Since Dallas sh!t the bed and I couldn't watch them win another SB. I guess this is as good an end to the NFL season as possible. Two more former Cowboys were elected to the HOF and the 49ers didn't win their 6th SB and on the even brighter side. Now we don't have to listen to them brag about being the only undefeated team with multiple SB wins!

I'll throw Ray Rice on that list as well.  You gotta love a guy that collects something from a fan of every visiting stadium he plays in.

So so so happy the Ravens proved me wrong. I thought there was no way. My daughter is so excited that Michael Oher gets to hold the exact same trophy we had our pic taken with at the Hall of Fame. She best summed up my feelings though when she said "I'm glad Michael Oher gets it, but I still wish it was the Seahawks instead."

This doesn't feel like a real trophy ceremony because the commissioner isn't getting booed.

It's extra entertainment (a lil concert) for people who paid extra ridiculous prices for those seats.
