NFL Trade Rumors: Tony Gonzalez To The New York Giants? Jay Glazer Wants It To Happen
Since Kevin Boss Isn't Working Out, How About Tony Gonzalez As Shockey's Replacement In NY?
The Giants traded Jeremy Shockey to the Saints, thinking that Kevin Boss would be a viable replacement, after his solid performance last year in their Super Bowl run. While the Giants haven't lost a game yet, Boss has been largely a disappointment this year.

If the Giants want to strengthen their depth and talent at TE while giving Eli Manning another receiving option, why not go for the greatest tight end of all time? Tony Gonzalez is rumored to be asking for a trade, and to the Giants no less.

Gonzalez already has 2 TD's this year for a team that has one of the worst offenses in football.

This deal makes a lot of sense for the Giants, if they can get Gonzalez for a reasonable price. They are the defending Super Bowl champs, and are looking good right now to make quite a run at a repeat. They don't have many weaknesses, but tight end is definitely one of them. Boss has only had 5 receptions this year, and hasn't shown the consistency that he showed last year. While Gonzalez is getting older(he's 32 years old), he's still one of the better receiving TE's in the game.

This trade might be the one that takes the Giants over the top. There's only one way to find out. Carl Peterson needs to pull the trigger on it.

What are your thoughts on this potential deal? Would it be worth a couple draft picks from the Giants, perhaps the ones they got in the Shockey deal? Should the Chiefs let go of their legend? Discuss.

He'll be out of Kansas City by Tuesday.  Carl Peterson was able to get a washed up Trent Green out of town when he wanted out, I'm sure he'll be able to find a place for the best TE to ever play the game and a first ballot hall of famer.  Next Sunday is going to be a sad day not seeing #88 in the Red and Gold but he deserves to be on a team that gives him a chance to win in the playoffs - or make it ot the playoffs for that matter.  He's always been the consomate professional here in KC and he will be missed.  Good Bye and Good Luck Tony.

I think Gonzalez has earned the right to do what he wants.  If he doesn't want to be traded, they shouldn't.  But if the Giants give a good offer and he's willing, than pull the trigger.  I don't think Chiefs fans would be too angry, a new regime is coming in anyhow.

If Gonzo goes to NY this year, I'll be rooting for back to back Championships...Tony deserves one.

You're right, Chiefs fans were ready to say goodbye either a year or two ago to him, and if given an opportunity, and we get something back for him -- take it, without question.

As a Denver fan, I would love to see Tony leave the division.  As a football fan, I believe he has been a pleasure to watch and should be a HOF in the near future.

Mixed emotions on this one.  Kevin Boss has not really been a part of the offense this year and that appears to me, a hardcore Giants fan, to be a choice made because of all the offensive weapons.  Think about it.  When Plax is in and on, he is one of the top receivers in football.  Then you have Hixon who is going to be a future superstar along with one of the most dependable receivers in Giants history with Amani Toomer.  Moss is coming into his own, and Smith continues to be a big weapon as well as dependable.  This all said with one of the greatest catch of all time owners in Tyree who has been out with injury.  Then you you have probably one of the best depth backfields in football with Jacobs, Ward, and Bradshaw.  Hard to tell where you would take a hit by utilizing tight end more.  But with that said, how could anyone not want a guy like Gonzalez on their team.  The guys is phenomenal.  To me, I have no problem keeping the hand I was dealt.  The Giants are fairly young but some spots that will need attention in the future could be on the O Line.  Note this on Boss.  His blocking is much improved.  Passes to him have been few and far in between.  Again, I state that this was more a choice due to so many weapons, not because of Boss.  Of course that is just my opinion.

For those that don't know, Gonzo is considered the best TE of all time, not just because he has the most catches, and most yards, and all that jazz...he's also one of the best blocking TE's ever as well.

Another weapon like that for passing as well as helping the running game is as good as anyone could want. Plax goes off the deep end again, why not have another #1 receiver be a huge TE that 2-3 guys need to watch every play?

Good points but even without Plax, Hixon is top notch.  And Tyree I believe is coming back soon.  My biggest concern with a move like that would be chemistry that the Giants have right now.  But the Giants game, the way the team is built right now, can't have a tight end as the top dog receiver.  The only time the Giants ever had a team built that way was with Simms and Bavarro.  They proved this with Shockey.  He made some big plays but did not fit into what the Giants had in mind.  Now that is one side of the coin.

On the other side, if you have a bigger weapon in tight end that will occupy the linebackers and ends on the D, which may even make the Giants running game stronger.

I think the Giants are already the favorite to win the title this year, but this would put them over the top for sure.  Eli Manning would be an MVP candidate with a guy like Gonzalez to throw to.

the Cheifs shouldnt get rid of Tony, but i think he wants to go and will go to the Giants, If the Giants get him there is no question that they will win the NFC and maybe even the Super Bowl, considering that the AFC teams this year are weaker then the NFC.

Well get his ass out of town then. Hes old and past his prime. We might as well get SOMETHING for him. Like a pick to keep rebuilding.

Gonzalez just needs to get out of dodge while he can and while he's still young... Good luck Tony!  As a Chiefs fan I will miss Tony if this deals goes through.

i told you before we got rid of shockey how valueable a player shockey is and how boss only had a good run because his name was not shockey or plaxico therefore he was not covered as tightly. But no one wanted to listen to me...The giants traded the best all around TE in the game for IMO nothing! The TE positon has suffered so far and we have yet to play a half decent secondary. When the Giants play a team with a secondary, if they lose it will be due to the lack of TE depth!

Plus its like i said 3 months ago...imagine going two TEs Shockey AND Boss.

You lost me when you called Shockey the best overall TE in the game.

There's no way in hell he even comes close to Witten, on any level.

Its not like they're hurting or anything from it.  4-0 and clearly the best team in the league right now and the only headache they have to deal with is Plax. If they get Gonzo for a 3rd rounder, they'd end up essentially trading Shockey and a 3rd for Gonzo and a 2nd and a 5th.  I think its clear that the Giants were much much better off this way.

who have the giants played? NOONE! thats why they are 4-0! Playing yet another nobody team tonite they should be 5-0 after tonite! My point is once they face a good defense the TE will need to be there...and they traded Shockey...

The Giants did not need Shockey for the horrible game against the Browns.  They needed to play like the Giants.  It was obvious from Eli's first pick off that Eli was just trying to force the action to Plaxico.  Two intereceptions later and Eli was caught in a downard spiral which showed him force the third interception that was actually the game breaker.  The Giants as badly as they played on Monday night, were still in the game up to that last interception.  The defense was not the same and Eli was forcing things.  Remember how much of Eli's game is in timing patterns.  When Plax is down for a week,  that timing is inhibited.

Also, as far as Shockey goes, how many games does Shockey end up watching from the bench or the stands.  I am so sorry to anyone that is in love with this guy.  I was on his bandwagon until I saw how injury prone this big goof is.  Then to top it off his attitude was not much better.  He caused more problems than he did good for the Giants when he was with them.  And you never could count on a 100% healthy TE with him.

until last year shockey has played through injurys! i mean who can play with a broken leg anyways? this season he has a sports hernia and missed 2 games...but like i said if you have boss and he was as good (even though he is not) as everyone said he was then you have a decent backup!

And its like you said Eli was trying to power the passes to Plax...notice how all the picks went in Plax's direction? Personally i HATE Plaxico...he's very overrated and complains about as much as T.O. Did you see how well Eli played without him? IMO its time we traded Plax for either Gonzo or some help in the secondary!

I am not at the point of hating Plax, but his attitude of team and his lack of effort at the end of plays if he does not make a catch is befitting of a 3 year old.  So I am a bit disillusioned with the guy.  As far as Shockey goes, he wanted to leave.  He could have had the broken leg and stayed solid as a teammate supporting his team.  I know he played through the injured foot and toes.  That is tough for a guy his size.  But really what he did was make one big play and then make a bonehead move and blow it with a penalty.  Shockey's attitude needs work too.

I think the Giants had the right idea using Smith as a cutter like Welker from the Pats.  I also don't understand the lack of Amani Toomer.  He is solid.  Also remember that Hixon is going to be top notch before too long.  And don't forget that Tyree who is a big guy too, will be back soon.

The Giants are going to be fine and they will be fine as a team.  That was the formula for winning the Superbowl and it will be for making another run at it.  We missed out on Gonzo.  Sure he would have helped.  But I was not setting myself up for disappointment.

The Giants are like a marriage to me.  After some really poor seasons, I loved them in sickness and in Health.  That made the Superbowl that much sweeter last season.

With guys like they have in the backfeild and the core of receivers they are going to be dangerous no matter how you slice it.  I do however have my concerns about Ross on D.  Something needs to be done with him.  He seems to be on the ground every time he gets burned.  You can't have that against an average receiver let alone potential Pro Bowlers.

keep in mind how young ross is though! He had a good rookie year and he's only going to improve. Our secondary as a unit i think could easily be improved so i would trade plaxico for the help. I agree we are very in depth in the wide out position so why not trade to help balance out the team? not to mention we still have Mario Manningham lol what happened to him?

He is young, I agree.  But what is he doing on the top recievers alone?  He has help but getting burned so badly that the help is not there soon enough.

Trading Plaxico and replacing him with Hixon I think would work but we first need to make sure that Hixon is not going to be another injury plagued monster.  And Tyree is working out with the team again.  So yes, trading Plaxico for a top notch corner is something I would be on board with wholeheartedly.  Something I really want to know is where was Toomer Monday night?  Is he hurting?  I have not read anything on that but the only throw I remember to him was the one that was picked and ran back for a TD.
