Now we're talking. 15 more teams getting started today and over the weekend which makes it officially training camp season with everyone in pads. A lot of potential impact rookies with this batch, so here's what I'll be monitoring closely:
Atlanta Falcons The rehabilitation of the Falcons begins. It's Matt Ryan's team on day 1. While he's clearly the story, what I'm more interested in is how much patience Falcons fans are willing to have with the 3rd overall pick from Boston College. He's going to make mistakes, he's a rookie after all, but impatient fans tend to lose all rationale. Normally exhibition games aren't to be taken seriously, but for this team, each and every game is important. Also looking forward to how Michael Turner handles a full-time load. Always thought he's been a top 10 RB. Other rookie to watch: Chris Lofton, LB
Buffalo Bills First things, first, rookie CB Leodis McKelvin needs to sign and get into camp. Who knows if Trent Edwards is the answer at quarterback for Buffalo (or is it Toronto?), but I love what Dick Jauron did last year. No fooling around, he just handed the keys over to Edwards (mostly due to injuries), but instead of hemming and hawing this offseason, the organization put its full support behind the Stanford product. That's how you handle the QB position *cough*Bears*cough*. Rookie to watch: James Hardy, WR, who was a steal at the 41st pick. Will lead all rookies in receiving TD's.
Carolina Panthers So as to not focus too much on quarterback -- although I'll be looking to see if Delhomme's arm falls off, the story in Carolina is at running back. The Panthers have forced it to be a story, drafting a running back with a top pick in the last several seasons. For their sake, let's hope they've found the go-to-guy in Jonathan Stewart. There's no question he's talented and tough, but he also found a way to get injured off and on at Oregon. I can't help but go back to the QB... would you please just start Matt Moore and move on. I think he's going to be a very solid starter soon. Other rookie to watch: Dan Connor, LB
Cincinnati Bengals Ha. Maybe it's not so much what we should watch, but what we should listen for? For everyone's sake, let's hope we don't hear a lot of noise from Bengals camp. The only reason Johnson's drama has become tolerable is the Brett Favre fiasco gnawing away at our souls. Cincinnati will ultimately score points on offense, Carson Palmer and Co. are too talented. The Bengals seasons rests on an improved and healthy defense. Keith Rivers, it's all you. Other rookie to watch: Jerome Simpson, WR, fast and will stay out of trouble. Could end up starter by default.
Dallas Cowboys This year's HBO Hard Knocks team, which is one of the best shows on television. They made the Kansas City Chiefs incredibly compelling. That's what I'm watching. No too many questions roster-wise, on paper the best team in the NFC. How high do you draft Marion Barber in fantasy leagues? I say top 5. Honest. Rookie to watch: Felix Jones, RB, of course.
Denver Broncos I'm looking for a healthy breakout season from Jay Cutler. Top draft pick Ryan Clady should immediately help buy more time in the pocket, more time for that cannon of an arm. Defense needs to live up to its talent. Rookie to watch: Peyton Hillis, FB. More of a utility back from Arkansas, that never should have fallen to the 7th round. Shanahan will finds many uses and Hillis will find the end zone often.
Green Bay Packers Don't care. Just get this Favre mess over with.
Houston Texans Like many of you, I keep wanting to pick the Texans to be a surprise team in the AFC South. Despite finishing in last place last season, an 8-8 mark was a huge success. Wouldn't you be picking the Texans to win the NFC North this year? Matt Schaub should settle in at QB, hopefully Andre Johnson will be healthy throughout. I'm keeping my eyes focused on Mario Williams who I think will eventually break the single season sack record... could it be this year? Rookie to watch: Steve Slaton, RB. Is he too small to contribute or too fast to be tackled?
Jacksonville Jaguars The QB position is now set, David Garrard is the man. Running back position is strong. The focus turns to the defensive line where the Jaguars made some draft day moves to select not one, but two defensive ends with their first picks. Is Derrick Harvey worthy of his 8th overall pick? He'd better deliver for a team who has Super Bowl aspirations. Other rookie to watch: The other DE, Quentin Groves.
Miami Dolphins Laugh away, but I believe Chad Henne will be the starting quarterback before long, or should I say behind Long. Jake Long is ready to be a shutdown left tackle on opening week, there's not a lot of questions there. There is, however, at just about every other position. I can't help but turn my focus to Ricky Williams, whom Bill Parcells reportedly loves. Maybe there's something more to Parcells slowly relaxing more and more. The overall team motto this season is: who will they draft with the No. 1 pick next year, as well? Other rookie to watch: Philip Merling, DEPittsburgh Steelers No more questions at quarterback, but if the offensive line doesn't improve there will be a serious question as to who will replace an injured Big Ben. Fortunately, Roethlisberger has a healthy(ier) Willie Parker, and a steal of a draft pick in Rashard Mendenhall. An improved running game should prevent so many all out blitzes... but then, who's going to replace All-Pro guard Alan Faneca? All eyes are on the O-line. Other rookie to watch: Limas Sweed, WR
San Diego Chargers Everything is in place, now it's time to win a big playoff game. It would help if the Chargers could secure home field advantage, instead of traveling East to New England. No real drama here. Rookie to watch: Antoine Cason, CB
St. Louis Rams For some reasons the Rams are taking their camp way up to Wisconsin. Maybe that's so their fans won't see how bad they are? In all seriousness, St. Louis shouldn't be that bad, certainly not as bad as last year. Biggest weakness remains offensive line which will continue to be the barometer for success. If Marc Bulger has time and Steven Jackson has holes, we're all aware of how much damage they can do. Rookie to watch: Chris Long, DE, of course.
Tennessee Titans Jeff Fisher used his first round pick, again, on a running back, and this time is was a name no one expected for at least another round. One year after selecting Chris Henry, who dazzled with a fast 40 time at the combine, they went with a carbon copy in Chris Johnson from East Carolina. Dumb. I'll be looking more closely at wide receiver, where only the Bears have worse options. Other rookie to watch: Lavelle Hawkins, WR, who could very well start on week 1.
Tampa Bay Bucs Only five quarterbacks in camp, should probably go grab Brett Favre to round it off. Can't you just see it, Jeff Garcia and Favre both going down with elderly injuries and then actually have to use Brian Griese or Chris Simms. Gruden would somehow look smart for bringing all these arms in. Rookie to watch: 1st pick Aqib Talib, CB.
Your turn...
