A lot of lopsided games today, let's look.Jets Top Titans 34-13: It looks like we can officially call the Jets a legit contender. The D played strong, only allowing 45 yards rushing. The Jets ran the ball all over the mighty Titan D, Thomas Jones had 96 while Leon Washington had 82. Brett Favre went 25-32 for 224 yards and 2 TDs (1 INT). The key stat was this: Time of possession. The Jets held the ball for 40:30 in this game. That is a telling stat. The Titans still have a safe lead on the one seed at 10-1, but the Jets hold a one game division lead at 8-3.
Patriots Win 48-28 Slugfest over Dolphins: I say slugfest, because it seemed like someone got hurt every other play. Oh, and there was a fight. On a field goal try, LT Matt Light and LB Channing Crowder decided to trade fists, Light hitting a helmetless Crowder in the face. Both men got the boot, and both will likely see suspensions.
As for the game itself, it was very back and forth, trading points. It was a 3 point game in the 4th, but the Patriots added more points late to end it. Miami's run game was shut down, although Pennington had over 300 yards and 3 touchdowns. Matt Cassel topped him, getting 415 yards and 3 touchdowns. Both Randy Moss and Wes Welker each had 8 catches for 120+ yards; Moss had the 3 touchdowns. The Patriots are game back on the Jets at 7-4, and the Dolphins are 6-5. Both teams right in the wild card battle.
Buffalo Wins Arena Bowl Vs. KC 54-31: The Bills D didn't return, but the offense sure did. Trent Edwards had 4 total touchdowns, two thrown, two ran. Getting 10 points at the end of the half branched them ahead in what had been a close game. Thigpen threw 3 TDs, but also had 2 interceptions and a fumble. The Bills move to 6-5, keeping them near the wild card top. The Chiefs are 1-10.
Dallas Stomps San Fran 35-22: It was actually 6-0 49ers after one, but the Cowboys pass game stepped up. Romo threw for 341 yards and 3 touchdowns, and Terrell Owens had a huge day, getting 213 yards on 7 catches. The 49ers were able to get over 300 passing yards, but Frank Gore was completely shut down, getting only 26 yards. Dallas is now 7-4, at the worst tied for the last wild card (Depends on Washington) and San Fran is 3-8.
Baltimore Destroys Philly 35-7: Donovan McNabb was very mediocre, going 8/18 with two INTs and a fumble. But Andy Reid opted to flat out bench him for Kevin Kolb, who proceeded to suck as well, including throwing a 108 yard INT for a TD to Ed Reed. The Ravens offense wasn't even that great, but who needs to be when you get great field position. Baltimore is 7-4, still a game back on the Steelers and right in the wild card hunt. The Eagles are 5-5-1, and their playoff hopes are definitely ending fast. The question is, what will the backlash be for benching McNabb?
Houston/Cleveland 16-6: I feel sorry for anyone who was forced to watch this porous game. Neither team really wanted this one, especially the Browns. Jamal Lewis fumbled twice, and Brady Quinn threw two INTs. Romeo "The Walrus" Crennel panicked and put in Derek Anderson, who didn't throw a pick, but still sucked hard. On top of that, Kris Brown missed twice, Phil Dawson had a huge shank, and Rosenfels got into the turnover party, throwing two INTs. I think the Crennel era in Cleveland is going to be ending at the seasons' conclusion. Both teams are now 4-7.
Bears Flatten Rams 27-3: No real surprise here. Marc Bulger got hurt very early, so the Trent Green show was less than stellar. 4 interceptions, and a total of 14 rushing yards. The Bears had 5 sacks, and Matt Forte ran for 132 yards and two touchdowns. The Bears stay tied for the division lead at 6-5, while the Rams are 2-9.
Lions Blow Lead, Lose to Buccaneers 38-20: Leave it to the Lions to kill their fans even more. They had a 17-0 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. We all knew they'd screw that up, but they had blown it before the 2nd quarter was over. Ronde Barber had two interceptions, one for a TD. Clifton Smith chipped in with a punt return TD as well. Tampa is now 8-3 in very good playoff position, and the Lions keep the path to perfection going at 0-11.
Vikings Spank Jaguars 30-13: Nothing loses a game quicker than turnovers, and the Jaguars had 5 of them. Once again, the Jaguars running game was shut down, and with that goes their offense. The Vikings offense wasn't even very good, in fact they were bad. But it didn't matter. The Vikings are tied for the division lead still at 6-5, and the Jaguars fall to 4-7. It's now safe to say that the Jaguars are done.
Two good late games, and then two others. Giants and Cardinals both look like they have their divisions wrapped up, but the Redskins and Falcons both need wins for wild card position. A Panther win could keep them ahead in the division and for the #2 seed, and Denver could pull away with a win over Oakland. Enjoy.
