As surprising as the fact that Brett Favre vs. Matt Cassel is the game of the week, is the fact that three Super Bowl contenders are staring 0-2 in the face. Either Minnesota or Indianapolis will be winless, and Jacksonville is another bad offensive performance away from starting in the hole. On the flip side, either Chicago or Carolina will be undefeated which would be quite a coup for both. The Bears doing so on the road, while the Panthers have been without their best player. Here's my picks for this week and as always, click on the links to enter into the weekly pick'em.
Titans at Bengals -- 62% picking Tennessee
Carson Palmer vs Kerry Collins. You'd think this would give Cincy a big advantage, but unfortunately the Bengals defense remains a sieve. I look for Kerry to use Lendale White and Chris Johnson often and I expect the latter to have a big day. The Titans defense will be very physical and keep Palmer on his toes, but in going with the predictability of the NFL, he'll rebound with enough offense for a close victory. Oddly, the Bengals are Vegas favorites. My Pick: Bengals 23, Titans 20
Colts at Vikings -- 78% picking Indianapolis
One of these teams, whom many had in the Super Bowl, will start out 0-2. Adrian Peterson is a little more of a known commodity than Matt Forte, but that doesn't make him any easier to stop. AD will get his yards at home, but more than that I think we'll see Tarvaris Jackson make a few more downfield plays than he did last week... which means he'll make at least one. I'm not concerned about Indianapolis long term, but for just this week you have to be with Dallas Clark out and Addai banged up already before he meets the Vikings defensive line. Vikings 27, Colts 24
Bears at Panthers -- 57% picking Carolina
On the flip side and equally as shocking, one of these teams will be 2-0. Steve Smith has always burned the Bears so Chicago is very fortunate to get Carolina during his suspension. Assuming the Bears defense that showed up last week in Indianapolis also travels to Charlotte, it's hard to pick against Chicago. Devin Hester will strike for the first time this season making up for an average Kyle Orton game. Bears 23, Panthers 20
Saints at Redskins -- 82% picking New Orleans
I don't think Marques Colston loss will put a dent in the Saints offense, not this week at least. Jeremy Shockey is the best thing to happen to Reggie Bush and while those two get a great deal of attention, Drew Brees will keep finding Devery Henderson and David Patten downfield. Another 300+ for Brees and another 100+ all-purprose for Bush. I do think Jason Campbell will move the football much more efficiently, but not enough to keep up with NO. Saints 31, Zorn Stars 20
Giants at Rams -- 97% picking New York
This is that type of game that wouldn't surprise me if it fooled us all. Everything says Eli Manning will throw to Plaxico Burress all day and Brandon Jacobs will run over whichever Ram is in his way. Which in the NFL means the Rams will fool us and win, right? OK, that's still a stretch but it'll be close. Giants 24, Rams 21
Packers at Lions -- 86% picking Green Bay
Time for the Lions to man up. They were embarrassed last week by a rookie QB and Michael Turner running for 223 yards. They'll play a little better, but not well enough to overcome an efficient Aaron Rodgers performance and Ryan Grant, who will obviously get his yards. Packers 24, Lions 17
Raiders at Chiefs -- 71% picking Kansas City
Yeah, that's how bad the Raiders are. 70+ are picking the Chiefs. Since Brodie Croyle isn't at quarterback anymore, I'd have to agree, but it won't be pretty. Chiefs 16, Raiders 13
Bills at Jaguars -- 67% picking Jacksonville
Remember when the Jags were a Super Bowl pick? They're a mess right now, especially on the offensive line. I'm going with another upset... Bills 28, Jaguars 24
Falcons at Buccaneers -- 73% picking Tampa Bay
Hope you enjoyed that opening week, Matt Ryan. Now welcome to the NFL outside of Detroit. Not real big on Tampa this year, but the defense can tackle and will have a pick six against the rookie QB. Bucs 24, Falcons 14
49ers at Seahawks -- 81% picking Seattle
Peter King says Seattle will score 40 points. I think you had a little too much coffee yesterday, chief. Seattle will win obviously, but who exactly will be scoring all those points? Julius Jones? Don't think so. Seahawks 24, 49ers 17
Patriots at Jets -- 64% picking New York
Game of the week, at least on Sunday. Matt Cassel is making his first start in 1999. Brett Favre is making his 255th consecutive start. I know Brett Favre gives the Jets a new edge, but I don't like picking against the Patriots when they're out to prove a point. Patriots 21, Jets 20
Chargers at Broncos -- 65% picking San Diego
Jay Cutler looked great in week one and will now have Brandon Marshall in addition to his new favorite target and everyone's free agent pickup, Eddie Royal. The trouble in picking this game is that LaDainian Tomlinson and Antonio Cromartie's status remain up in the air. This pick is subject to change on Sunday morning, but for now I think Cutlerpalooza comes back to Earth a bit. Chargers 28, Broncos 21
Dolphins at Cardinals -- 80% picking Arizona
You know, Chad Pennington didn't look terrible last week and they had a chance to win against a Jets team that is decent. The Buzzsaw has disappointed their fans a lot of the years, but they won't do so with a home opening loss to the Fins. Cardinals 34, Dolphins 17
Steelers at Browns -- 83% picking Pittsburgh
Browns looked terrible last week, didn't they? 200 yards of total offense and now they're staring 0-2 in the face. Big Ben and Willie Parker have had some great games aganist Cleveland and that will continue on Sunday night. Steelers 31, Browns 17
Ravens at Texans (Monday Night) -- 68% picking Baltimore
Hurricane Ike moves this to Monday night. Hurricane Flacco won't be winding his way through the Texans defense quite like he pulled off a week ago. Hopefully Willis McGahee can give it a go and if that's the case, they should be good enough to control the ball and pull off a great win against some Houston players that may have other issues on their mind. Ravens 17, Texans 13
Eagles at Cowboys -- 80% picking Dallas
Two of the best looking offenses from week one make for a great Monday Night Football worthy matchup in Big D. Tony Romo has too many options at his disposal. While the Eagles will get their points and make this exciting, you can't expect another error-less performance from McNabb against a completely different defense than he faced last Sunday. Cowboys 31, Eagles 24
