Two weeks in the books, and while not everything is clear, these 10 thoughts are. Well, make that 11. The Cincinnati Bengals are a mess. 10. NFC East is going to be fun
Not every game is going to be as fun to watch as the Cowboys-Eagles Monday nighter, but I suspect all four teams are going to be battling for playoff spots. Yes, even Washington, who will likely fall short, but likely decide who wins the division between New York, Dallas and Philly. I'm going to go ahead and call a two-way tie for second, with both representing the division in the NFC playoffs.
9. Jonathan Stewart needs to be the man in Carolina
Despite the loss, the Chicago Bears defense play well on Sunday. Nearly as well as they did in Week 1 against Indianapolis. Carolina had just 47 yards offense in the first half, but in the second some decent field position allowed for Jonathan Stewart to show his toughness. The Bears knew the Panthers were going to run, and Stewart run threw them. It was very, very impressive for a rookie back to show that much power. Two touchdowns later and the Panthers came back from a 17-3 deficit. Stewart had just 14 carries, which is good for his health, but if the Panthers want to keep on winning, Stewart will have to see the ball 20 times.
8. Chargers loss will be a playoff decider
The most unfortunate outcome of the missed Jay Cutler fumble call was that it'll likely be a game the keeps the Chargers out of the playoffs. Cutler will have that offense moving well enough to stay a game up on San Diego. Denver is a good team, and deserving, just unfortunate a correctable situation wasn't allowed by the current rules.
7. Buffalo is going to be right there with New England
The two won't meet until Week 10, and when they do, they'll be sporting the same record 7-2 record. Trent Edwards is looking more and more comfortable and taking on the necessary leadership role the team needs. Buffalo is 5th in total defense after two weeks and a +3 turnover ratio. So long as Edwards continues to play error free, they'll be right next to New England all the way through to the last week of the season where the two teams will meet in Buffalo. Advantage Bills?
6. DeSean Jackson is an idiot.
Just wanted to say that one more time.
5. Break-up the Buzzsaw
Let's not jump immediately to the conclusion that Arizona is going to win the terrible NFC West, but as the most surprising 2-0 team it's at least nice to know that division won't be done by Week 13. If the Cardinals offensive line can protect Kurt Warner, then maybe, just maybe, the Buzzsaw can wrap up the division a few weeks later. I really like the way they've played, even if it's against poor competition.
4. Is it too early to call the AFC North?
No. Pittsburgh has already won the division and while the schedule gets incredibly tough, it will serve as practice against many potential playoff teams. Roethlisberger's shoulder is obviously a serious concern, especially against the blitz happy Eagles this Sunday, and even if they lose that one, they'll coast comfortably ahead of Cleveland, Cincinnati and Baltimore.
3. It's amazing how much scrutiny a quarterback receives
Here in Chicago, everyone is throwing Kyle Orton under the bus... already. While he didn't play great, he was still 19 of 32 and missed a few key passes. What he didn't do was fumble the ball twice in their own territory. Tight end Greg Olsen coughed it up twice, leading to Panthers scores. And yet, this is all Orton's fault apparently. I'm not in that same group. Orton is the best we're going to get here in Chicago and gives the Bears the best chance to win. Few teams win when you turn the ball over like that against good teams.
2. Eagles offense is legit, nice to see Donovan McNabb healthy
McNabb still made a few overthrows that must be maddening to Philly fans, but he's returned to full health and made numerous spectacular plays last night. Enough that I can no longer laugh at the pundits who placed the Eagles in the Super Bowl. While that's still a huge stretch, a healthy McNabb/Westbrook combo with DeSean Jackson as a deep threat will be able to score points on the best defenses on their schedule. I've been most impressed, surprised by the Eagles after two weeks.
1. Still feeling good about my Cowboys Super Bowl pick
37 points allowed isn't great, but the Eagles offense proved themselves to be explosive. But sometimes the best defense is an offense that can continue to score at will. That was a video game breaking out at Texas Stadium last night, and the Cowboys were just choosing how to score next. Felix Jones. Wow.
