Nine games early, let's look at how they went down:Saints Win London/No Defense Bowl 37-32: Lots of offense, no defense. Both quarterbacks threw for about 340 yards (339 and 341) and each had 3 touchdowns. Turnovers (and bad coaching) were the demise of San Diego. The Saints had zero turnovers, while the Chargers fumbled once and threw one INT. Statistically, very even as a whole. The Chargers were down by 17 in the 4th and had a chance to tie it late, but that's when the interception came. Brees purposely got a safety late while running the clock. The Saints are now 4-4, and the Chargers are 3-5.
Dallas Holds On Against Tampa 13-9: It certainly wasn't a pretty win offensively for the Cowboys. Brad Johnson averaged 3.7 a pass, Barber averaged 2.8 on the ground, and the leading receiver had 33 yards. (Owens) Tampa's offense wasn't much better, which is surprising considering how bad the Dallas D has been. Tampa had a chance on the last drive, and they kept getting 4th downs, but ultimately could not convert on one. Both teams are now 5-3.
Dolphins Upset Bills 25-16: Turnovers were the key for the Dolphins. Three fumbles and an interception helped them out. Joey Porter had a great day, with two sacks and a fumble. Ted Ginn had 175 yards, and the Dolphin passing game was effective despite the run game getting shut down. Bills are now 5-2 and the Dolphins are 3-4.
Ravens Beat Raiders 29-10: As you could expect, little offense in this game. The Ravens had a lot of rushing yards, even though McGahee had troubles. Ray Rice had 64 on 8 carries, and Joe Flacco even had a big run for a TD. Ravens D had 4 sacks and held the Raiders to 47 rushing yards. The Ravens are now 4-3, and the Raiders are 2-5.
Patriots Beat Rams 23-16: From a number standpoint, this game was almost dead even. The Rams actually had 10 more total yards than the Patriots. The Patriots actually had one more turnover as well. But they took the lead with about 3 minutes left in the game on a 15 yard pass to Kevin Faulk. The one huge stat, the Rams had 9 penalties, while New England had ZERO. Patriots are now 5-2 while the Rams are 2-5.
Eagles Beat Falcons 27-14: This one was actually much closer than the score would indicate. Late in the 4th, down by a touchdown, the Falcons were about to get the ball back. The punt BARELY missed the return man, but it happened so fast that it was ruled a muff. The Falcons didn't have any challenges, so the muff stood. And Brian Westbrook punched one in to seal it. Westbrook ended with 167 yards and two touchdowns. Both teams move to 4-3.
Redskins Top Lions 25-17: Statistically, this game shouldn't have been remotely close. Yet, the Lions led at the half, and even had a chance at the end on the last drive. But ultimately, the Lions remembered they were the Lions. Big plays by Santana Moss, (Punt return and pass) helped give them the win. Clinton Portis ran for 126 (he was injured at the end) and Campbell was 23-28 for 300+ yards. Washington is 6-2, and the Lions are a sad 0-7.
Jets Sneak One 28-24 From Chiefs: Brett Favre tried to help the Chiefs, he threw 3 interceptions, including one really bad one which went back for a TD. Brandon Flowers had two INTs, one being the TD. Tyler Thigpen was actually serviceable (although the Jets D will do that) But down with a minute left, the Jets took the lead on a pass to Laveranues Coles. The Chiefs couldn't score late as you can expect. The Jets are 4-3 and the Chiefs are 1-6.
Cardinals/Panthers: The Cardinals had more yards passing, but it didn't matter. The Panthers held them to 50 yards rushing, and 30 of those yards were by Anquan Boldin. Early, the Cardinals were dumb, they tried a fake field goal late in the 2nd and ended up short of the first down. That shifted momentum for the Panthers. The Panthers did a great job at the end. Up by a touchdown with just under 6 minutes, they were able to run the clock ALL THE WAY down to zero. DeAngelo Williams had 108 yards and Steve Smith had 117 and 2 touchdowns. Panthers are now 6-2 and the Cardinals are 4-3.
Late games are underway. Enjoy.
