NFL Week 8 Thread: Hopefully the Dolphins Won't Offend London Fans
READ MORE:
NFL

We've got American football in London today, but I remain curious as to why the league only sent one NFL team? Odd strategy don't you think?

Anyways, here's the storylines I'm tracking today:

43-year-old Vinny Testaverde ending the Colts perfect season ...

Roy Williams getting KTFO in Chicago ...

Who gains more all-purpose yards: Brian Westbrook or Adrian Peterson ...

Does anyone watch St. Louis and Cleveland ...

How many yards do the Steelers roll up on Cincinnati ...

Does Eric Mangini finally go to Kellen Clemens ...

You? Feel free to discuss NFL Week 8 right here.

Nice to see the Brits showing some love to our national anthem. Classy folks. I look forward to hearing theirs. I don't know if I've ever heard it before.

Picks today...

Colts over Panthers by a TD or more.
Titans over Raiders, but the Raiders beat that insanely high spread.
Browns over Rams in the Toilet Bowl
Vikings to beat the Eagles.
Giants big in jolly England.
Steelers over Bengals.
Bears over Lions.
UPSET: Jaguars over Buccaneers
Chargers over Texans.
UPSET: Bills over Jets
UPSET: 49ers over Saints.
Pats over Skins, but Washington beats spread.
Broncos beat Packers close.

I'm kind of pissed off - I had been hoping to watch the game from London, but at the last minute we got switched to Bears/Lions. They showed the national anthems, maybe they will forget to switch us back.

Looks like an incredible crowd in England. It's a shame they got such a crappy game, because I think they're going to enjoy this. Almost 100,000 people there. But I still don't think that having games over there is a good idea. Teams shouldn't really have to give up home games and travel across the pond.

Miami/NYG and Ind/Car for the early games. Washington/NE later.

I've got Colts/Panthers and Lions/Bearssss with Pats/Wash later

TD in the Toilet Bowl, Rams on the board.

I'm sure the English fans are all saying Jonny Wilkinson would have done much better.

(In case you couldn't tell, I found access to the game from London. In a perfectly legal way. Yeah.....)

TD Panthers.

Colts D looked lost on that drive, they couldn't stop anyone.

Same here. Can't wait to see the Pats game.

The Panthers look great so far against the Colts defense. Makes me think that the Patriots could do pretty well next week, if 43-year old Vinny Testaverde can march his team down the field like that. Excellent drive, Carolina runs 12 minutes off the clock, and puts up 7.

How about a drive of 11:01 for a TD early?

Go Vinny!

Jeff Feagles is one of the Giants' captains? I wonder how many teams chose their punter as a captain.

Most teams have at least one special teams captain, considering Jeff Feagles is insanely old, it makes sense.

And to answer your question, 4 teams have punters as captains.  Feagles, Brian Moorman, Shane Lechler, and Craig Hentrich are those punters.

Which is really strange, considering the top of the article says "Teams appointing season-long captains qualify for up to six captains to wear the letter “C” on the upper right chest of their jerseys."

As they should be doing, the Steelers are chewing up the Bengals secondary.  Another Ward TD.

My guess would be that only 6 can wear the C...but they can say as many people as they want are captains.

For some reason, the NFL.com commercial with John Lynch pops in my mind..."We've got 11 leaders on this defense..."

If Drew Stanton ends up being as good as they think he can be the Lions have a good future though.  Calvin Johnson and Roy Williams is one scary combo, especially with Mike Furrey in the slot.

Heck, their 2nd best receiver this year has been Shaun McDonald!

If they can get a consistent offensive line, they could have a top 5 NFL offense.

Yes, the Pats will do it this year.

Booooooo on the Giants for kneeling the ball at the end of the game in England. When you're trying to make your sport popular in a place that isn't quite as familiar with the sport, how about handing the ball to Jacobs or Ward and letting them run for a few downs to run out the clock, instead of the boring kneeling. Kneeling the ball is fine in most cases, but I think running the ball would have been a very easy way to give the fans a lot better taste for football in the waining moments of the game.

No it didn't. I think that was a questionable no-call though. I realize Fletcher was playing the ball, but that doesn't make it ok to basically shove Moss into Taylor...does it?

My next question is...how the hell was London Fletcher keeping up with Randy Moss?

I get this funny feeling that you could have spotted the Redskins 20 points today, and the Pats would have just tried that much harder, and been that much more explosive on offense, so they could make up those 20 points, and STILL build up a 30+ point lead.

Sorry if I sound like a homer right now, but the Patriots are giving me the impression that they can pretty much do whatever they want, whenever they want.

Pending the extra point, the Pats are leading 38-0. This is obscene.

I know Brady's going for records and all, but sooner or later leaving him in games late or in blowouts will catch up to the Patriots. I know it's still the 3rd quarter, but there's no reason why he needs to be in there, they have a 38 point lead.

10/28/07

I know the score is getting up there, but Brady needs one more TD pass...gotta keep the 3-per-game streak alive.

10/28/07

Not sure on the 4th down play...I'm not all against it; just don't think it was necessary.

41-0 or 45-0; does it really matter at this point?

Eventually a team (like say, the Jets when they are losing by 50) is going to go straight at his knees... and quite frankly if they keep this up I couldn't completely blame them.  I wouldn't say go at a guy's knees but would have no problem with some unnecessary contact after a play.

10/28/07

I don't know how people are going to feel about the Pats going for it on 4th down with a 38 point lead, but a QB sneak is probably the riskiest possible play call there, and I question that. But since nothing happened to Brady and they got the 1st down, I guess I'm fine with it.

And I don't think it's terribly unsportsmanlike, because there's not much difference between being up by 41 and up by 45, and if they missed it, it would have given Washington the ball within the 15 or so. The Skins just should have stopped them

TD WELKER!!!

Really? I'm pretty sure that's against the rules. Leaving a guy in, on the other hand, is perfectly legal. If they don't like being down by 30+ points, then they should play some freaking defense.

All I'm saying, is that if a team runs up the score on me, they'll regret it.  I could care less what the rules say, if my team is being disrespected, the other team will regret it.

Imagine that, Kellen Clemens didn't solve anything when he played, and he actually did worse than Chad.  He may be good in the future, but no way he corrects that joke of a team.

Who is disrespecting anyone? Right now, the Redskins are disrespecting themselves, by allowing the Patriots' backup QB to rush for a 15 yard TD.

If you are an NFL team, and you are losing by 52 points, like the Redskins are doing right now, you have no one to blame but yourself. Playing dirty isn't going to do anything but disrespect yourself even more.

The Redskins should try playing some football sometime today.

Perhaps the Saints are back after killing the 49ers.  Or maybe the 49ers just suck THAT much.

Chargers final over Texans.  Surprise!

Once again...it's not about him being the short term solution. Not every team is geared towards winning this year. Building for the future is important as well. And getting Clemens some playing time will do nothing but good for this team.

The thing is once the Patriots take their starters out they've done all they can to stop the bleeding so to speak.  So yes at that point the Skins are disrespecting themselves.  But if the Pats keep their starters in they are running the score up.  At that point they've made their players fair game.

And I''m not just saying that for the Pats, its just they've always up by 30,40,50 points a game and seem to score a last second TD with their starters in and half of them happen to be on fourth down.  Its a questionable tactic at best.

Or it could kill his confidence...or...him...considering that line really isn't good at blocking.

I'm just pointing out that Clemens hasn't fixed anything, when CF basically said that Pennington is the reason they can't win.  Not saying Clemens can't be good eventually, but he can't fix anything with this team.

But when is the magic time that they should take out the starters? Brady really only played into the 4th quarter because he was finishing a drive that had started in the 3rd. I really don't think it's unreasonable at all for a team to play their starters for 3 quarters, regardless of the score. It's an NFL game, between 2 NFL teams. If a team allows themselves to fall behind by 40 points, they deserve whatever they get. And cheap shots on the other team are NEVER justified. EVER.

I'm so disappointed that there is no SNF tonight.  The World Series game will probably suck again and be never ending.

Guess it's a night of Madden for me...

It'll suck because it won't be interesting.  The Red Sox will probably dominate, and these games have had an absurdly slow pace that have made them very boring.  I'm sure your very excited since the Sox will win the World Series, but the game won't likely be that good of a game.

Over/Under of 65 in next weeks "Greatest game in the history of the world"

I'm curious what the spread will be.  The Pats have had really high spreads so far, but obviously going to the RCA Dome, I don't think 16.5 will happen.

"The Patriots are averaging more points per game than Michael Jordan ever did in his career"

That may be the dumbest statement I've ever heard. I know the Pats offense has been amazing, but what does a Jordan comparison have to do with anything? It's 2 different sports! And a team and an individual!

What was their alternate line? The Patriots have scored more points per game than Wayne Gretzky ever did?

To be fair there isn't any magic time.  Its just whenever it becomes clear the game is over.  It was pretty clear after the Pats scored their 1st TD in the 2nd half that it was over.  I can understand giving Brady one more drive after that just to be sure.  So in today's game I would've said after the game was 38-0.  The Pats were actually weren't too bad this game when it came to running up the score... the Skins just sucked that bad.  As for the "cheap shots",  they wouldn't have to be cheap.  Just blitz 8 and tell my guys not be afraid to take an extra step at the QB.  Run him over, don't tackle him.  The other team will get the point pretty quickly.

What do you think the spread will be? I'm guessing the Pats will be favored by about 6. But honestly, I wouldn't pick against the Patriots right now against ANYONE, with ANY spread.

Hard for it to be too huge...I'd figure maybe 6.5.

Bucs just threw a pick, Jaguars win.  WR caught it, got jacked, and then Nelson made a nice diving catch.

An upset, that I CALLED!!!  WOO ME! lol.

I'm not sure that it was really an upset. I think it was more of a case of a poorly calculated spread. I realize the Jags have some QB issues, but Tampa Bay is not a very good football team. Everywhere else, it's advantage Jacksonville.

I think it's safe to say that you're a little more knowledgeable then most fans in England though, when it comes to American football. Although you realize the reasoning behind kneeling the ball, don't you agree that a few running plays would have been a little more exciting for the casual fans, and would have been a very low risk of a fumble or anything?

And yeah...it sucks that they gave you guys such a terrible matchup. The Dolphins are a miserably bad team, and the Giants played down to their level.

Technically it was an upset lol.  Vegas was smart though, they realize the average fan is blinded by the "Almighty QB" and would only pick with which team has a better one.

I don't know if this has been said but doesn't it seem to everyone else that the Patriots are almost like a guy playing with an All-Pro team versus a terrible team and they are playing on Rookie mode?

It's kinda like Week 1 on Tecmo Super Bowl if you play as the 49ers, where you win 50-0 regardless.

Wow, and to think I was in the top of the site on over/under after the early games.  Ended up 7-5, yikes!  7-5 spread too, and 9-3 straight up.

Average week.

Ugh..not such a good week for me

7-5 in picks, 5-7 vs. spread, 6-6 over/under.

I had a similarly mediocre day...I was 7-5 straight up, 6-6 against the spread and 5-7 in o/u.

But at this point, I'm so ecstatic that I don't even care.

I am waiting for that game when everything goes wrong for them. Similar to what the computer does sometimes when you are just rolling through a season and all of a sudden you throw 4 picks and fumble 2 kickoffs and miss fg's.

Yea I don't play Madden almost for that reason only, the other being I'm not a huge NFL fan. I love playing NCAA and sometimes they have that game in there sometimes. Usually against the worst team on your schedule.

One thing I've never understood, considering the games aren't too different, is the drop off for me talent wise between Madden and NCAA.  On Madden, I can beat CPU's usually no problem on All-Madden.  On NCAA, I suck on the level below Heisman, and am not even great on Varsity, and I've never been quite sure why.

The only reason I can figure out is because you really can't audible that much.  On Madden, rarely will I run the play I call without some adjustment.  On NCAA, you can't change which way a running back goes without completely flipping the play, and you don't have formation audibles.  Thus, my offenses tend to struggle.  Plus, for some reason I can't get any pressure on the QB defensively either.

See NCAA plays different than Madden. You can change the direction the RB goes by pushing the right thumb stick and it does a change the play. Madden seems like it is too easy to pass and almost impossible to run.

Not on PS2.  On Madden, a flip of the stick changed the direction of the runner, on NCAA it doesn't.

On Madden, it isn't impossible for me to run.  In fact, I usually run a ton, and only throw a few passes, because passing doesn't always work for me unless I'm the Colts.  With the 49ers, Alex Smith can't hit a wide open receiver, it sucks.  So everyone gets a heavy dose of Frank Gore.

Really? Because I played 07 on PS2 and the stick did it.

For NCAA???  I know for sure 08 doesn't for PS2.  Maybe 07 did, I didn't actually play many games because the disc got scratched, and only allowed me to do stuff that wasn't in game.
