NFL fan falls to death at Candlestick Park during Sunday’s game
Gordon Shyy, a spokesperson for the Sand Francisco Police Department, said multiple people witnessed the fan – whose identity has not been revealed – fall onto the sidewalk from the Jamestown walkway, which goes around Candlestick. The incident occurred shortly after the 49ers and Packers kicked off at 4:25 p.m. ET. According to the police, witnesses also claimed that the man appeared intoxicated at the time of the incident.
Off-duty police officers and medical personnel duty medical personnel provided first aid to the victim until an ambulance arrived – but he could not be saved. Police on the scene indicated that the man suffered serious injuries, though they did not provide an estimate of how far he fell down to the sidewalk. The man was declared dead even before the ambulances arrived to transfer him to a local hospital.
The incident and the fan’s death were not reported during Fox game coverage of the 49ers' 34-28 victory over the Packers, though the home team released a statement afterwards.
"The San Francisco 49ers learned that there was a fatal accident outside of Candlestick Park prior to today’s game,” the 49ers said in the release. “We would like to express our deepest condolences to the family during this difficult time."
The fan’s identity is being kept under wraps until the medical examiner notifies his family. The looked to be in his 30’s, witnesses also claimed.
This is the third serious incident to occur at an NFL stadium in less than two weeks.
A fan at the Denver Broncos’ preseason game on Aug. 30 was seriously injured when he fell off an escalator.
Earlier on Sunday, two fans were injured at Lucas Oil Stadium when a rail collapsed after the Indianapolis Colts defeated the Oakland Raiders. Witnesses said the ans were leaning against a railing above the tunnel used by the Raiders when it collapsed and they fell onto the walkway that led to the team's locker rooms.
Colts spokesman Avis Roper update had no information on how severely the fans were injured. But according to unofficial reports, one fan carried off on a stretcher while another left in a wheelchair.
