The NFL cracked down on Arizona Cardinals linebacker Daryl Washington on Wednesday by suspending him for the first four games of the 2013 NFL season due to violations of the league’s drug-abuse policy.

It is a huge blow to the Arizona Cardinalsand will have for first-year coach Bruce Arians and new defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, who will be have to search for a replacement to the underrated yet promising defensive player Daryl Washington, while he’s suspended during the first quarter of the 2013 season.

"Adversity and dealing with it is part of the business. But when it's avoidable like this was, it's particularly tough," said Bruce Arian in a statement shortly after the NFL’s announcement of the suspension for Daryl Washington. "One of the biggest things we preach is accountability. Daryl knows that, and our team knows that. We will deal with this, and others will have to step up until he's back. I'm confident they will."

The league has offered no details to the substance violation for Daryl Washington has been suspended or the drug he tested positive for. But it will definitely put a hamper in Daryl Washington to repeat last year’s production while suspended for four games, especially after a breakout season in 2012.

"I was always taught that when you make a mistake, you admit it, learn from it and face whatever consequences there are,” Daryl Washington said in a statement released by the team. "I take full responsibility and I understand that I let down my teammates, the organization and fans. I apologize for that and promise that no one will work harder to make up for it.”

Daryl Washington posted career-highs with 134 tackles and nine sacks, while also compiling four passes defensed, one interception and two forced fumbles last season. The 26-year-old Daryl Washington started all 16 games in the 2012 season.

However, Daryl Washington is still cleared to participate in offseason, training camp and preseason work out. He won’t be banned from the team facility until Week 1 of 2013 regular season. The Arizona Cardinals picked Daryl Washington out of Texas Christian in the second-round of the 2010 NFL draft, and he’s been a starter for the team ever since his rookie season.

With Daryl Washington suspended, recently signed free agent Jasper Brinkley could start at one of the linebacker spots. The Arizona Cardinals are thin at linebacker in the middle of the field.
