There are only two games on tonight’s docket for the NHL, but it’s Monday, so you know at least one of them is on Versus. The Tampa Bay Lightning visit their division rival Washington Capitals while the Edmonton Oilers finish off a long seven game road trip against the New York Rangers.
For Edmonton, nine of the past ten games have been played on the road and three wins is all they have to show for during this time. While they have improved, all three wins have come in the last five games; the Oilers are going to have to show they can win on the road. The Rangers are another team that haven’t been so hot lately. Dropping three of the last four games, New York has yet again become inconsistent scorers, which is really amazing when you think of all the offensive talent on the team. This will be a low scoring game, and expect the trends to continue. I’m going the underdog.
My Pick: Edmonton
Now moving on to the game of the night, as televised on Versus. Neither the Lightning nor Capitals have played much within the Southeast Division yet, but this game tonight is a must win for both teams. The Lightning just need to get on track and back to playing at their potential of the 2004 Presidents trophy winning team. The centerpieces in Prospal, St. Louis, and Lecavalier are still there, but they aren’t scoring much. On the other side of the ice, the Alexander lighting up the lamp this year is Mr. Semin, not Ovechkin. He was the reason the Capitals made the playoffs last year, and he needs to get going if they want to do it again. Right now, I just see Washington as the better team.
My Pick: Washington
Edmonton Oilers @ New York Rangers 7:00pm (MSG)
Tampa Bay Lightning @ Washington Capitals 7:00pm (Versus)
