Drama, on the Ice and off, as we head into Monday night [NHL Live Thread]

Blog Photo - NHL Monday Night [Live Game Thread]It's a quiet night tonight, with only four games, but we have some of the Q's favorite teams on the ice tonight.  Last night I got to see my beloved Calgary Flames defeat the team I probably dislike the most, the Vancouver Canucks. It made me giggle.

However, the game was not without controversy.  Calgary was in the grip of a winter storm, meaning the Canucks had some delays flying in.  They managed to reach Calgary two and half hours before game time, but as the Canucks; players stated, they could not use the delay as an excuse for losing the game.  They can find all the excuses they want, I don't care.  I just care that Calgary won.

The win was not without drama, as I stated in the headline above.  Firstly, it was a win for Flames' goalie, Danny Taylor, his first in the NHL.  Second, Alain Vigneault, coach of the Canucks, was given a minor penalty for "Abuse of an official" when he objected to an elbow not being called as a penalty.  Iginla scored the game winning goal as the penalty expired, and when asked about it at the end of the game, Vigneault left the media center.

The twitter feed was alive with complaints about the Montreal vs Boston game last night, but I didn't see that game.  I'm watching Sports Center this morning, yet the fight between Chara and Emelin is glossed over.  It seems Emelin made a hit on Tyler Seguin that Chara objected to.  Chara proceeded to show Emelin just how much he objected, and paid the price.  He was assessed 17 minutes in penalties and during his time off the ice, Montreal took advantage and scored twice to come from behind for the win.

By the way, the Edmonton Oilers also managed to play an entire period without a single shot on goal.  That also made me giggle.

Patrick Kaleta of the Buffalo Sabres meets the hockey police today to find out if he will be suspended for his from behind hit on Brad Richards of the New York Rangers.   The "experts" on TSN Sports Center declare he should have a four game suspension, as although the play is incredibly dangerous, the hit was not a high one, rather lower on his back.

One last note, after I posted the video of the huge save Cam Ward made last week on Joel Ward, the news has come down that Cam is out 6-8 weeks with a torn MCL and will undergo surgery to repair it.

In any case, we do have some games tonight, and the schedule goes as follows:

7:00 pm

New Jersey Devils (10-6-5) at Toronto Maple Leafs (13-9-0)
Broadcast:  MSG PLUS, SNET-O
Bet QBucks on this game!

Jess: The Leafs are hot, the Devils are not. Leafs are at home so that's another notch in the "favor" column. I have to go with Toronto tonight.

Bryan:   I'm starting to wonder about the Devils, they're suddenly not as unstoppable as they were early in the season.  I'm happy to see Toronto playing as well as they have, and I'm gonna take those Leafs for a home ice win tonight.

Debi:  The Devils are struggling without Brodeur and honestly, I just can't go against the Maple Leafs tonight.

7:30pm

Tampa Bay Lightning (9-11-1) at Pittsburgh Penguins (14-8-0)
Broadcast: TSN2, RDS2, NBCSN, ROOT

Bet QBucks on this game!

Jess: With as good as Pittsburgh is on offense and as rough as TB has it with their goalie situation right now, I can't pick the Lightning here, especially on the road. Pens.

Bryan:  Didn't we just have this a week ago?  I think we may see a similar game.  I can't pick against my Pens no matter what.

Debi: TSN is showing this game tonight, probably because the two top scorers are lining up.  Steve Stamkos and Sidney Crosby top the charts, so it will be an individual competition as well as a team one..  I know Bryan thinks I never pick his Pens to win, but in this case I think they will prevail.  Gonna be a gooder!!

9:00 pm

Anaheim Ducks (15-3-2) at Phoenix Coyotes (10-8-3)
Broadcast:  PRIME; FS-A

Bet QBucks on this game!

Jess: The Ducks frustrated me last game, taking the lead 4 times only to lose in the shootout. And three games in a row against the same team? This is going to get ugly...starting tonight. With the slash that Bobby Ryan put on Smith without getting called, I have no doubt that entire Phoenix team will be gunning for him tonight. You just don't mess with the goalie. I expect this game to be rather chippy, with at least one good brawl.

Bryan:  Ducks are winning this tonight.  I don't see Phoenix beating them 2 in a row.

Debi:  They Coyotes got the Shoot Out win on Saturday night, but the Ducks' fatigue was showing.  They tried, but they just weren't playing their absolute best.  Tonight, I believe, will be a different story.  A little rest can go a long way.

10:30 pm

Nashville Predators (9-8-5) at Los Angeles Kings (10-7-2)
Broadcast:  NHLN-US, NHLN-CA, FS-TN, FS-W

Bet QBucks on this game!

Jess: This will be a fun game to watch the end of as soon as my Ducks are done. The Kings are looking great, but the Predators are still having a tough time getting their ish together offensively. I think Los Angeles gets the W.

Bryan:   Apologies in advance to my sister, but the Kings are getting it together.  I'm picking LA to score a win tonight and make our favorite teacher a happy lady.

Debi:  I have to admit, this is a tough one.  the teams are very evenly matched and so far the Preds have won in the previous two meetings, but I just don't think that will be the case tonight.  Somehow the Kings let the Canucks get the best of them the other night, but I think that was a glitch.  I believe the Kings get the win tonight.

So there you have it.  Four games, but some good ones.  Join us here and let us know what you think.

I leave you with the video of Kaleta's hit on Richards.  What do you think the penalty should be?

The Preds are killing me this season.  IDK if Weber has lost his mojo with Suter being gone, or if the team has lost it's fight with Tootoo being gone.  But dammit, we need to figure this out.

I wish the Ducks would stop giving all of the Western Conference teams points.

I was wondering if the Kings were ever gonna get a shot on goal in that first period.  NHL Network has the LA announcers, they went over 15 minutes before their first shot.indecision

The Preds missed out on a couple of really good chances to score in the first.  Good thing Pete Weber and Terry Crisp are entertaining.

Ugh Stone with a goal to tie it up.

I hate this game.

3/4/13   |   Jess   |   35096 respect

Bobby Ryan SCORRRES!

This game has been too close for any frustrations on either side to evolve into a brawl just yet but I'm wondering if that just might not make a difference here soon.

*expletive* Doan with a goal to tie it up.

My daughter was done work and we had to leave, but got to see the two goals the Leafs scored to win the game.

And I just have to say this "KICK SOME COYOTE ASS DUCKS!!"

angel

Stamkos knocked the puck off Fleury's head with 8 seconds to go, so the empty net goal by Neal turns out to be the game winner, 4-3 final.

That's something I should be saying to Mr. Crosby.  (insert dreamy-eyed Ms. sunshine right here).

I'll be at the Preds game vs. the Wild this weekend, it looks like.  So they better have it together by then.  And I hope they prove you wrong tonight.  I'd apologize to Becky, but I'm not sorry.  wink

Welcome back Geno!  We're tied at 2!

Beleskey SCORRRES! 1-0, Ducks.

Bolts lead 2-1 after 2 periods...eff.

3/4/13   |   Debi_L   |   11868 respect

The Leafs score!!! And we are tied!

3/4/13   |   kramer   |   11004 respect

We're tied at 1-1 in the Burgh.  If the Pens can get some shots on Lindback, they'll get a couple goals.  He's very shaky.  There's a reason he was pulled in favor of Garon here last week after the first period.

3/4/13   |   kramer   |   11004 respect

Garon is hurt and Lindback is coming into the game for the Bolts.

BTW I am sitting at my fav Pizza joint/Bistro watching the Devils and Leafs

Well that's just to show the so-called experts they don't know what they are talking about!!

I don't say or type this much (in fact....probably never), but Go Ducks!

Oh....and I'd stay alert if I was Bobby Ryan, Smith can get ugly (uglier).

3/4/13   |   kramer   |   11004 respect

Kunitz gives the Pens an early 1-0 lead, 12th goal of the year for him already, wow!
