In something not done since Sergei Fedorov in 1996, Marian Gaborik scored 5 goals in one game against the New York Rangers. He didn’t stop there either though, getting an assist on the team’s only other goal. The Wild took it home 6-3. Ironically, before the game, Pavol Demitra and Gaborik were watching footage of Pavel Bure’s 5-goal game in the Olympics. Moral of the story: watch awesome goals/plays before you go out and play. On a side note, of all the thousands of players to ever play an NHL game, only 42 have scored 5 goals or more in one game.

Congratulations to the Calgary Flames. This past week, they became only the 4th team in NHL history to go away on a 6-game road trip and come back with six wins. The big game that stood out the most was the absurd 9-6 win in Tampa Bay where Jarome Iginla netted a hat trick all in the third period. With the big run, the Flames have battled back right into the thick of things, currently holding the 7th seed in the West.

The International Ice Hockey Hall of Fame has announced its inductees for May. This marks the first time a woman has been inducted, with 3 US Olympic players. They include Cammi Granato, Geraldine Heaney and Angela James. Mario Lemieux, Igor Larionov, Philippe Bozon and Art Berglund are the remaining four also inducted.
I’m sick of hearing stuff like this take front page every time it happens—the Chris Simon suspension. So that’s why it’s taking a “back seat” this week here. Here it is: he’s suspended 30 games. Personally I think it should be the rest of the reason, it’s his 8th suspension…
Moving on…

Miroslav Satan scored his 666th career point on Saturday. Hey, CBC brought it up, not me.
Now onto the rankings…
30. Los Angeles Kings 12-23-2: On a 7-game losing streak, the Kings have played at least 3 more games than most. They have to make up that much more to even think about the playoffs.
29. Washington Capitals 13-19-4: Playing very well against Detroit early in the week, the Caps close out 0-1-2. Now 5-3-1 in December, it’s important to close out strong.
28. Tampa Bay Lightning(-3) 15-18-3: How in the world can the league’s leading scorer belong to one of the worst teams!? Only LA has allowed more goals.
27. Toronto Maple Leafs(-3) 15-14-7: Toronto continues to stay alive due to OT losses. With a 1-2-1 week, they continue to lose ground. At least the defense is sort of under control.
26. Phoenix Coyotes(+2) 17-16-1: The Coyotes have picked up a point in their last 5 games. A shootout loss to Vancouver ended a 4-game win streak.
25. Edmonton Oilers(-2) 16-17-3: Losing two games last week, the Oils 5 game point streak was put to an end. 5 of the next 6 are on the road, where the team is above .500.
24. Atlanta Thrashers(+2) 17-17-1: The Thrashers played great hockey against some good teams last week. 3-2 over Ottawa and 3-2 over Montreal.
23. Florida Panthers(+4) 17-16-3: The Panthers had a three game win streak end with a loss to Toronto. Vokoun is beginning to play well, and the Panthers may be making a charge.
22. Nashville Predators(-5) 15-16-2: With a win against league worst LA, the Predators ended a 5-game losing streak. They are not getting much scoring lately at all.
21. New York Islanders(-2) 17-15-2: The Isles are the lowest scoring team in the NHL (NYR ironically 2nd worst). At least they now have a two game win streak to build on.
20. Columbus Blue Jackets 15-13-6: The Blue Jackets went 1-1 last week. They have 4 PPG all month… At least it won’t be as bad as November.
19. Pittsburgh Penguins(-3) 17-16-2: With a power play that went a stellar 1 for 16, the Penguins struggled to a 1-2 week.
18. Chicago Blackhawks 17-15-2: With a 2-1 week, the Blackhawks closed out the week strong with wins over Nashville and Ottawa.
17. Anaheim Ducks(+4) 18-15-5: On a current 3-game win streak, the Ducks went 3-1 last week. With a not so great road record, 2 wins in San Jose were great.
16. Philadelphia Flyers(-5) 16-14-4: Remember when I said winning every other game wouldn’t get them into the playoffs? Well losing six straight wont either, in a SO or not.
15. Calgary Flames(+6) 17-13-6: The Flames won the final two road games of a 6 game road trip. That made them 6-0 on the trip, where they went home and preceded to lose.
14. New York Rangers(-1) 17-14-4: This team is sad. Not only are they now losing, they’re losing to bad teams by a good amount. Then Gaborik lights ‘em up for 5!
13. Montreal Canadiens(-1) 17-12-6: Losing to teams near the bottom of the league is no way to keep up with the best. With a 1-1-1 week, the Canadiens fall to 5th in the East
12. Carolina Hurricanes(+2) 19-15-3: Carolina finally got back to a winning week, going 2-1. If it weren’t for a blown lead in Florida, it would be 3-0.
11. Buffalo Sabres(+4) 19-14-1: With a six game win streak going, the Sabres are battling back to a playoff spot. They have been able to win high and low scoring games.
10. Boston Bruins(-5) 18-13-4: Just as Boston steps it up, they sit right back down, going 0-3 last week. I’m beginning to think they’ll be fighting for one of the last playoff spots in March.
9. St. Louis Blues(+1) 18-12-2: The Blues stopped signing the blues and were able to end a 5 game losing streak. Going 2-1, they beat Detroit and then Boston.
8. New Jersey Devils(+1) 19-13-3: In the midst of a western Canadian road trip, the Devils started off 1-1. Alternating wins and losses the last six, Calgary could be a loss.
7. San Jose Sharks(-3) 18-12-5: I think I’ve finally figured out the Sharks! They absolutely suck at home(losing 3 more last week), so they lose enough to become an 8th seed, go into the playoffs and win every road game…makes perfect sense doesn’t it!?
6. Vancouver Canucks(+2) 20-12-4: The Canucks rolled 3-0 last week, rebounding from a disappointing 1-3 week before. They finally won in a shootout, now 1-4.
5. Colorado Avalanche(+2) 20-13-2: The Aves went 2-1 last week, boosting their record to 6-2 of late. Stastny continues to be a beast, leading the team in goals, assist, and points.
4. Minnesota Wild(+2) 20-13-2: The Wild had a 4-game win streak end against Detroit. But Gaborik scored 5 goals against the Rangers! And an assist!
3. Dallas Stars 20-12-4: Capping off a 4 game road trip, the Stars went 3-1, and 2-1 last week. More importantly, they are getting scoring all around.
2. Ottawa Senators 22-8-4: Although the 7-game win streak ended versus Atlanta, a 1-1-1 week keeps the Senators stay atop the east…by a lot.
1. Detroit Red Wings 26-7-3: ESPN.com says that while the Wings play on their own planet, the rest of the league is either trying, or failing to keep up. With the exception of a few teams, I think they are correct.
