Three teams can be eliminated today - Playoff hockey at its best

Blog Photo - NHL Playoff Hockey [Live Thread] SundayTwo teams were eliminated yesterday and both of them were considered favorites, yet they weren't able to play well enough to advance to round 2, and instead have the golf course option.

Today all three games are in the same position.  Three teams can knock out their competitors and head to Round 2.  All three series have been exciting, some have been downright jaw dropping.

First up, the Pittsburgh Penguins aim to even the series with the Philadelphia Flyers.  They were on the verge of a sweep by the Flyers, being down 3-0 in the series just two games ago, but have come back with a vengeance and now only need one more win to send the series to a game seven decision.  Of course, there are just as many Pens detractors as there are fans, if not more.  The same could be said for the Flyers.

The Penguins claim they've gotten into the heads of the Flyer players and perhaps they have.  The actions of Claude Giroux after the last game seem to indicate so.  Both teams will be playing with the same players as in the last game, and while Marc-Andre Fleury seems to have found his stride in net, Flyers' goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov has let in a couple of shots deemed stoppable.

If the Flyers want to move on to Round 2, they will need to play like it today, of all days.

No doubt this will be a close fought intense game.  It is being aired in both the US and Canada, on NBC and TSN respectively, starting in a few minutes.

Game two features two teams who played yesterday. These two teams have rallied back and forth and have played evenly with no team seeming to be dominant.  However, it has been the defending Stanley Cup Champions who have always had the lead in the series, until yesterday.  Today they could be eliminated.  Washington wants to do everything they can to make that happen, while Boston is desperate for it not to happen.  Tim thomas, who has been stellar in goal for the Bruins, has shown some cracks. Capitals players are hot right now.  They want this.  Watch for Alexander Semin to come out blazing.  He has three goals so far in the series and wants more.  It shows in his face.  The Capitals really want this series and want to move on.

Again, neither team has new injuries, so will be playing with the same players as yesterday.  The fact that they are playing another game only one day after the last may be a factor, but shouldn't be.  Teams play back to back to back games all through the regular season, although the case may be made that they play with a greater intensity in the playoffs.

NBC in the US and CBC in Canada will air this game, starting at 3:00 pm ET

The final game today is the one closest to home for me.  I am not a Canucks fan, yet the team is from my home province.  Co-workers and friends alike have been a little quieter this year than they were last year, given the 3-0 lead the Kings were able to put on the series.  All that changed in game 4 with the return of the ginger twin, Daniel Sedin.  Suddenly the Canucks fans I work with are as obnoxious and arrogant as ever, and boasting about how unstoppable the Sedin twins are.  Unfortunately, the combination of Daniel and Henrik Sedin might just be a problem.  The two seem to know what the other is thinking and when Henrik passes, Daniel just seems to be there.  It works in reverse as well.  It has always been said that twins have a special bond, but it pains me to see it in effect in hockey.

This will undoubtedly be a goaltenders game.  Luongo wasn't as successful in goal against the Kings, allowing four goals in each game he played.  However, Cory Schneider has been strong, stopping all but two shots in his two games in the goal, the best in the league.  Jonathan Quick is second to Schneider only in save percentage.  The two are proving to be the mold for which a goaltender should be formed.  Undoubtedly, this will be the one game everyone will tune in to watch, at least in Canada.  It airs on CBC and the NBC Sports Network at 8:00 pm ET.

The puck is about to drop in Philadelphia, so get comfortable for a long day of hockey and join in the fun.

They need to find a way to beat Schneider. The guy is playing way better than $7 million dollar junk goalie.

Ah maaaan.I wish Kopitar wasn't rushed on that breakaway.

All four of the penalties called in this game could've been let go. All four are weak calls, IMO. Refs already too involved.

And now it's time to pray again.....(though....it's my 5th possibly 10th..).....courtesy of Surly Jacob of lakingsnews.com

In the name of the Captain, the Son of Philly and the Holy Goalie.
Amen.

Bless us Oh Hockey Gods, and these thy gifts, which we are about to receive, from thy bounty, through LA Kings, Our Team. Amen.

Blessed are You, Kings our Team and Team of our fathers, Team of Dionne, Team of Luc and Team of Gretzky, the great, mighty and awesome Team, exalted Team, who bestows bountiful goals, who creates all wins, who remembers the insanity of the fans, and who, in love, brings a redeemer to their fans’s children, for the sake of Our Kings.

Peace be upon no Vancouver fan, without mercy or blessing of Kings.

Our Kings, who art back in Vancouver
Hallowed be thy game.
Thy kingdom come, thy wills be done
On their ice as it needn’t be on ours.
Give us this day our daily goals, and forgive no Canuck their transgressions,
As we pound into submission those who trespass against us.
And lead us past the first round,
Past these evil Canuck f**ks.
Amen.

Hail Kopi, full of grace, the fans are with thee.
Blessed art thou amongst players and blessed are the fruit of thy skills, goals.
Holy Kopi, dominant of centers, play for us sinners,
Now until the hour of our Cup.
A-f**king-men.

Caps played like donkey *bleep* that OT. Now they'll blow Game 7 as they always do.

About time the kid scored as he has been snake-bitten in the series.

Not the best start to OT for the Caps.

Semin goes DERP at the worst possible time. As always.

4/22/12   |   Debi_L   |   11775 respect

This game is aggravating me.  There seems to be a lot of chasing the puck around, on both teams.  They are skating around, but rather than passing the puck to get a move to the goal going, they are just shooting it in, then trying to skate to the puck.  And both teams are doing this.  It just seems disjointed to me.

4/22/12   |   Eric_   |   7716 respect

Done a lot of studying today, and going to have to do more still. For now though, it's time to be a fan. LET'S GO CAPS!

What a save by Tim Thomas as he just stole a sure goal from Marcus Johansson!

Still 4-1 in Philadelphia with just over under10 minutes left in the 3rd period.  Pittsburgh seems to be showing a little desperation.

4/22/12   |   Debi_L   |   11775 respect

After 2 periods, the Flyers lead 4-1.  Third period will be a battle, I have no doubt.

4/22/12   |   Debi_L   |   11775 respect

Pittsburgh gets a goal, but barely 30 seconds later, the Flyers get an answering goal, taking away any momentum.  Fleury is struggling in goal it seems.  Score is 4-1 with just under ten minutes left in the period

4/22/12   |   Debi_L   |   11775 respect

Pens on the PP.  They need to get something out of this if they are going to have a chance in this game.

Philly up 3-0 in the second period.  Wonder if Kramer is watching or listening?  He said when he watches they lose, but if he doesn't watch they win......

Actually, I am too.  There is one particular person I would like to take a King's logo'd blueberry pie and squish into her face.  I dreamed about it.  I really don't like her at any time, but I really dislike her during playoffs.  Because the Flames didn't make it in, she thinks that somehow makes HER better, as she is a Canuck's fan.  She is soooo fricking arrogant.  I got my daughter to make me an "ANYBODY but the Canucks" sign.  I want to stick it to the back of her car as she never goes around the back of it, but I'm too nice.  angel

Phillie has taken a one goal lead in the first period.  Play so far is as intense as we usually see in third period play.

BTW, goal was scored by Giroux.
