NHL Power Rankings 2.19

Ducks chasing Blackhawks while Blue Jackets anchor the ranks. [NHL Power Rankings]

Blog Photo - NHL Power Rankings 2.19I'd like to preface this first installment of the NHL Power Rankings on FanIQ by saying I've never done this before, for any sport. I love hockey and watch it religiously but I've never been brave enough to analyze stats, schedules, and more in order to come up with an "educated opinion" list. Be gentle with me.

As you can see, rather than going by W-L record I kept the teams relatively true to their rankings by points, but I moved them around a little based on the strength of their schedule over the last week. For example; two teams have the same amount of points. The team whose opponents over the past week have 74 collective points on the season will rank above a team whose opponents over the past week have 36 collective points.

The "Move" column is blank since this is the first edition of these power rankings. These power rankings cover the week of 2/11-2/17.

There are obviously a lot of differences between mine and the experts, and probably yours! Let me know where you don't agree, or what I got wrong. How would your list be done differently?

The Pens are off to the best road start in team history, and you hit the nail on the head Jess.

The game that I hoped would be a wake up call was indeed just that.  The night the Isles came in and nearly shut the Pens out in their own building, leading to the team basically getting booed off the ice, they got their act together and haven't looked back.

Also the best part is regulation wins are one of the new tiebreakers, and so far the shootout in Ottawa is the only game that's gone to OT or beyond.  The other 15 games have all been decided in regulation.

Oh...and I'll be about as broken up if they let Perry move on as I was when they let Pronger move on.

If you don't want him I'll gladly take him, although we don't have the cap room for another star player like that.  I will never forget his Slapshot strip at the All-Star Game.  He will always be awesome in my book for that.

I'm just thankful the Flames aren't in the basement.  They might be on the stairs to the basement, but I believe they are on their way up.  Like you, Jess, I hesitate to actually say that, however, as I think I'll jinx them.  They had Leland in goal for  a while, and now have McDonald, who seems to be a great fit.  I love Cammy, and I'm really glad to see him scoring.  Tanguay as well.  Now Iginla just needs to score a few more goals and this team could be on the good side of 50.

As I read your comments, I have to admit, in almost every case, your comments echo what I would say.  I have to admit, though, I envision quite a bit of movement when next week rolls around.  I just did a bunch of picks and if they go the way I hope they do, I see a couple of teams making moves up.

It's definitely tough to start after the season has been going on - I anticipate a lot of movement too when I do next week's.

Teach - I know - I'm always apprehensive to talk my team up too much when I'm doing blogs like this for some reason. They've been on fire though, even on offense. But they do like to make me sweat a bit - I'm tired of overtime and waiting until late into the 2nd period or even into the 3rd before they get it together. I love that so many guys are getting involved in the scoring, and I've always heartheartheartheartheart'd Beauchemin. He's having a hell of a season.

Nice Job, Jess!

I'm going to add to what you said about the Ducks (and I hate them...lol....well actually I only really hate Perry, Getzlaf, and their color commenter Brian Hayward). I think you might be short changing your team a bit --------------------------------->They're a good team. They have 4 lines rolling, and so far their "elder" D-men are hanging in there......which I thought would be their weakness this year. Having a hot goalie helps, but ......holy moly....have you seen their shooting percentage----It is NUTS!

It will be interesting to see if management decides to keep both Perry and Getzlaf.

As for the Kings, ......spot on, though I don't think it's Stanley Cup Hangover. ......More like-----the loss of two of their best D-men---Mitchell and Greene.....now Martinez, Quick coming back from major back surgery, etc..... Jerks. lol
