Twas the Night Before Christmas and Almost Every Team Will Play! [NHL Live Thread]

12/23/13 in NHL   |   kramer   |   11004 respect

Twas the night before Christmas when all through the league,
Many teams are scheduled for an all out blitzkrieg.
The stockings are hung in the locker rooms with care,
In hopes that Saints Mario and Gretzky soon will be there.
The players are ready to jump on the ice...
Why hello out there in FanIQ Land, 14 games tonight (all but the Habs and Canucks are playing) is certainly quite nice!

Welcome once again to our NHL Pregame Show,
We've got tons of action tonight, and lots of places to go!
I'm Bryan (or BK), your thorn between two roses,
And I'm joined by Jess and Debi, my co-hostesses with the mostesses!
All of our teams are playing tonight, so let's not delay,
IIIIT'S A HOCKEY NIGHT in North America, from New York to Calgary to L.A.!

We've got a long way to go and a short time to get there,
So don't waste any time trying to prepare.
The action tonight will leave you screaming for more,
The Q-Train is about to depart on a 14-city tour...ALL ABOARD!

We begin in Buffalo where the Sabres host the Coyotes...
Debi: Even though the 'Yotes are at the end of a road trip, I think they will take this one.
I’m starting out with an upset special today. It seems like a gimme for the Coyotes, but usually that’s when the “dubblya-tee-effs” happen. Sabres.
BK: I have to agree, the Sabres more than met their win quota for this paycheck, Phoenix it is.
Phoenix Coyotes @ Buffalo Sabres: 7:00 PM ET - FSN Arizona+, MSG Buffalo, BELL TV

Next it's off to the now buzzer-less MSG where the Blue Shirts host the Leafs. (Yes, that still disappoints me that they got rid of it during the remodeling!)
The stats say home team, so home team it is.
Here’s where logic is telling me Leafs, but my personal feelings are telling me Rangers. I know they’re not *my* team, but I love Lundquist so much, I want good things for them.  Leafs have probably got this one, but I hope not.
BK: I think I have to take the Rangers in this one as well, they've been playing pretty darn well lately.
Toronto Maple Leafs @ New York Rangers: 7:00 PM ET - SportsNet Ontario, MSG2

We head to our Nation's Capital next where the Caps host Jess's Ducks...

Debi: I just cannot go against the Ducks.
So I never pick for my team…but I’m gonna say something here. The longer a streak goes, the harder it is to win. Obviously the Ducks are a touch better at home than they are on the road, and they’re on the road tonight. This game has all the makings of a trap game to me, and it scares me. Go Ducks!
BK: I can't go against them either, they're having one hell of a year.  Ducks come into the Verizon Center and ruin Christmas for all those fans rockin' the red tonight.
Anaheim Ducks @ Washington Capitals: 7:00 PM ET - Prime Ticket, CSN Washington

We head to Raleigh next where the Canes host the Blue Jackets...
Debi: This could be a really good game, but I gotta go with the Hurricanes.
I know nothing about either of these teams other than they’re both kinda mediocre. I haven’t really seen either of them play much this year and don’t know their styles or how they match up. I’m calling a Hurricanes win for the simple reason that they’re at home.
BK: Debi says it could be a good game, but I say WOOF.  Both of these teams are a huge disappointment...with that said, I'm also picking Carolina, but by a final score of 1-0 in a 10-round shootout.
Columbus Blue Jackets @
Carolina Hurricanes: 7:00 PM ET - FSN Ohio, FSN Carolina

From there we're headed north of the border to Canada's capital city with the Pens & Sens.

Debi: Oh I so don't want to pick the Pens!!!!  However, I think it will be a bit of a miracle for the Senators to win this one.
Jess: Pens

BK: Games between the Pens & Sens are always entertaining, but nail biting for me at the same time.  This is the first time we're playing Ottawa since we absolutely dismantled them in the 2nd round of the playoffs last year, so they'll be looking for revenge.  Keep that streak going, Pens, and give me a nice Christmas present with a win!
Pittsburgh Penguins @ Ottawa Senators: 7:30 PM ET - RDS, Root Pittsburgh, SportsNet East

We now head back into the states to The Joe where the Wings host the Isles.
Debi: The Islanders lost a heartbreaker to the Ducks the other night, giving up a two goal lead to lose by two.  I just don't see anything really going any better in Detroit, unfortunately.
Ugh, I can’t see the Red Wings losing this game.
BK: Part of me wants to pick this as my upset of the night, but as lousy as the Isles have been I just can't.  *sigh* Wings should have this wrapped up by the end of the first period.
New York Islanders @
Detroit Red Wings: 7:30 PM ET - MSG+, FSN Detroit+

From there we're off to the battle of Florida...
Debi: This could be a good game as well. Both teams are playing well but I believe the Bolts will win it.
A lot of lopsided matchups today aren’t there? I’ve gotta go with the Lightning.
BK: This actually may be a good game, Debi, you're right!  The Panthers just had their longest winning streak in...was it 5 years?!  I am actually going to take Florida for this one even though I think the Bolts are still the better team.
Tampa Bay Lightning @ Florida Panthers: 7:30 PM ET - SUN, FSN Florida

Did anybody else see the butt goal?

12/23/13   |   Debi_L   |   11868 respect

And the Flames win it in the Shoot out!! WAAAAAHOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

12/23/13   |   Debi_L   |   11868 respect

Holy ccrap!! The Flames came back and managed to tie it, and have survived OT... On to the Shootout!

And I have really sucked at picking the winners tonight, but some wished for wins definitely came thru!

Ugh, 5-0, now Ottawa is just running up the score...and I hope Chris Neil gets a lump of coal thrown at his face for a gift, such a friggin' punk.  When this team comes to Pittsburgh they will be reminded of this night, and better not cry about the Pens if they blow them out and keep scoring when the game is out of hand.  They'll deserve the payback.

Guess the Pens were due to lose one, but this is just pathetic tonight, en route to a shutout and now Dupuis is hurt.  This is far too many injuries for one team to sustain and still play good.  If they don't start getting their players back healthy very soon, this Pens team is in deep trouble.

Go Flames and Ducks and Avs and Sens and Jets!!
