Atlantic Divison Clash, Original Six, A Time Change in Boston, and Much More! [NHL Saturday Live Thread]
We begin our day in the city of brotherly love as the Flyers play host to the Canes. Carolina is coming off an OT win against the Sens in Ottawa. Meanwhile the Flyers are coming off a shootout loss to the Panthers on the same night. Will the Flyers bounce back at home or will the Canes be the rude visitors for a second straight game? Both of these teams need to find themselves.
Carolina Hurricanes @ Philadelphia Flyers - 1:00 PM ET - FSN Carolina, CSN Philadelphia
Next we're off to Newark where the Pens and Devils will play the first half of a home-home. These 2 games are a battle for the Atlantic Division lead. The Devils have only one regulation loss, and that was to this same Pens team at the same time last Saturday. They've bounced back nicely shutting down the Bolts while the Pens are riding a now 5-game win streak. This looks to be the game of the day. Kris Letang is out for the Pens, but he was also out Thursday night against the Caps and they still exploded for 5 goals. For your afternoon viewing pleasure, this one's on NHL Network for everyone outside of the 2 local markets. This is one of the 2 best games of the day.
Pittsburgh Penguins @ New Jersey Devils - 1:00 PM ET - ROOT Pittsburgh, NHL Network
We have an hour to get to our next stop, and we're headed north of the border into he Canadian capital. The Sens will play host to the Jets. Ottawa hasn't lost in regulation on home ice. The Jets conversely only have one win on the road. Will that trend continue? The Sens will look to rebound from their OT defeat at the hands of the visiting Canes a couple of nights ago. The Jets, well they need to figure something out.
Winnipeg Jets @ Ottawa Senators - 2:00 PM ET - CBC regional coverage, RDS
We have to head back across the border into Hockeytown for our next stop on the tour. The Wings are home at The Joe against the visiting Oilers. Both of these teams are treading water so far, and for Detroit that's not what we're used to seeing. Will this team get it together, or can the Oilers pull off what I'm sure many would still consider a surprise upset?
Edmonton Oilers @ Detroit Red Wings - 2:00 PM ET - CBC regional coverage, FSN Detroit
Next we're headed out west for an afternoon matinee at the Shark Tank. The Coyotes come to town for just their 4th road game of the year, they didn't win in their first 3 road games. The Sharks have one loss on home ice in regulation, and that was at the hands of the Hawks. Can the Coyotes shut down the Sharks, or will they continue to struggle away from Phoenix? Following Pens/Devils, this one will also be on NHL Network.
Phoenix Coyotes @ San Jose Sharks - 4:00 PM ET - NHL Network, FSN Arizona
We have a 3-hour window to grab dinner before our next few games begin. We are on our way back to our Nation's Capital where the reeling Caps return home to host the Panthers. The Panthers are coming off a shootout win in Philly while the Caps lost the game in one period in Pittsburgh. The Panthers don't score much, we all know that. The way both of these teams are going, Caps especially, first team to 3 wins the game. Will it be the Caps for a change?
Florida Panthers @ Washington Capitals - 7:00 PM ET - FSN Florida, CSN Mid-Atlantic
We're on our way back north to Nassau Colosseum where the Isles will play host to the Sabres. The Sabres are 2-4 on the road and the Isles are 1-3 on home ice. Something's gotta give in this game. Which team's woes will continue and who will buck their trend for at least one night? Both teams could use a win to get back into the thick of things.
Buffalo Sabres @ New York Islanders - 7:00 PM ET - MSG, MSG+
Next we're headed back across the border for an Original Six matchup. You know this one is tonight's showcase on Hockey Night in Canada. The Habs host the Leafs. Montreal is 5-2 on home ice, and Toronto is 5-1 on the road. Again like the game above, something's gotta give! Boy did the Habs ever miss Andre Markov. This should actually be an exciting game though!
Toronto Maple Leafs @ Montreal Canadiens - 7:00 PM ET - CBC, RDS
Next we're headed back through the blizzard into Beantown. This game was originally scheduled for 1:00 this afternoon, but due to all the snow it was rescheduled for 7:00. We've got 2 more Eastern Conference powerhouses for this one, as the Bruins host the Bolts. The Devils shut down the high-flying Bolts a couple nights ago, can the Bruins do the same tonight, or will they find their stride again? The Lightning have struggled away from home while the Bruins have only one loss on home ice.
Tampa Bay Lightning @ Boston Bruins - 7:00 PM ET - SUN, NESN
We're not getting away from the cold for the next stop, we're headed westward into the Twin Cities where the Wild are at home against the Preds. Nashville has been better away from home this year so far while the Wild have 4 wins, and they've all come on home ice. Rinne and Backstrom are both quite stingy. With these 2 goalies, first to 3 could easily win it.
Nashville Predators @ Minnesota Wild - 8:00 PM ET - FSN Tennessee, FSN North
The Gateway City is our next stop on the tour and this could very well be the game of the night. I mentioned Pens/Devils is one of the 2 best games, this is the other. The Blues are looking to rebound from another loss at the hands of the Wings. It's not going to get any easier though as the Ducks come into town. At 7-2-1 they're flying high, but looking to rebound from a loss in Dallas last night. This should be an exciting one to watch!
Anaheim Ducks @ St. Louis Blues - 8:00 PM ET - Prime Ticket, FSN Midwest
Our night cap is the 2nd half of the Hockey Night in Canada showcase. It's a Canadian battle between the Flames and Canucks in Vancouver. Calgary is 2-0-1 on the roa while the Canucks are 3-1-1 at home. Which of these two teams will come out on top in tonight's finale? I'd like to see the Flames pull out a win myself!
Calgary Flames @ Vancouver Canucks - 10:00 PM ET - CBC
This is your official live thread to talk (or bitch) about the game(s) you're watching this afternoon and tonight. Aside from your team, tell us which game you're most looking forward to seeing. Talk it up and let's get this party started! Your host has to work, but I'll be here in spirit, so let me just say now LET'S GO PENS!
