The Second Half of the NHL Season Kicks into High Gear with 10 Games! [NHL Live Thread]

3/9/13 in NHL   |   kramer   |   11004 respect

Gooood morning, FanIQ and welcome to another jam packed Saturday full of hockey!  Today we've got 10 games on the schedule, everything from an afternoon matinee in Beantown to Debi's Flames playing the champs in Hollywood late tonight.  My co-hostesses with the mostesses are both here with me today for our pregame show.  We have a triple-header on the NHL Network for your viewing pleasure today.  Debi and Jess, let's get this show on the road.  We've got a long way to go and a short time to get there!  All of you joining us, you know what to do.  We've got a 10-city tour on the Q Train, so let's get a move on...ALL ABOARD!

We begin our day in Boston, where the Bruins play host to the Flyers, the first of your NHL Network games.

Jess: This one is a toss-up for me. Bruins I guess.
Debi: I gotta go with Boston here.  They are just stronger lately, and the Flyers are playing like crap.  Boston it is!
BK: Boston is damn near untouchable on home ice, and the Flyers are abysmal on the road...that and the fact that you cold never pay me enough to pick Philly if my life depended on it.  We're ALLLLL on the Bruins...
Philadelphia Flyers @ Boston Bruins - 1:00 PM ET - NHL Network (US AND Canada), CSN Philly, NESN

We have another early game facing off at the same time at Nassau over on Long Island...
Jess: Look at these Caps! I’m going out on a limb and saying that they can make it past the Isles today.
Debi: Washington seems to have remembered how to play hockey.  Not sure what the issue was exactly early on, but they have won a bunch lately, and have to be the favorites tonight.  Besides, I like them.
BK: Don't look now, but the Caps are slowly creeping back into the playoff race, 7-3 in their last 10.  I am actually going to pick the Isles in the upset here though, they seem to win one, lose one, so I'll pick them to win one.
Washington Capitals @ New York Islanders - 1:00 PM ET - CSN Washington, MSG+

Next we have an hour to get to a date with the two teams that will shortly be joining the Eastern Conference.
Jess: What’s with this rivalry? Or is that only in my head? I’m too lazy to look anything up right now. I’m going out on a limb and saying that the Blue Jackets will take this one from Detroit at home.
Debi: Columbus beat Vancouver the other night (muuhahahahaha) and I think they want out of the basement.  Probably not the popular choice, but I'm going with the Blue Jackets.
BK: Columbus has won 3 in a row, that's really stretching it.  Meanwhile, Detroit is back up to 4th in the West.  I want Columbus to win, but I just don't see it happening, Wings walk away with this one today.
Detroit Red Wings @ Columbus Blue Jackets - 2:00 PM ET - FSN Detroit, FSN Ohio

Let's quickly hightail it out to the Shark Tank for an afternoon matinee between the Sharks and Blues, the second of your NHL Network games...
Blog Photo - NHL Saturday Live Thread
Jess: The Blues surprised me the other night, and I think they have it in them to beat the Sharks tonight. Day games are always kind of flat, IMO, and since essentially this is earlier in Sharks time than Blues time, then the Sharks will likely be flatter than the Blues. This sounded better in my head. Blues win
Debi: Gotta go with the Blues.  Don't know why, just do
BK: This game could honestly go either way...just to go against the grain of you two, I'm gonna take the Sharks.
St. Louis Blues @ San Jose Sharks - 4:00 PM ET - NHL Network (US), FSN Midwest, CSN California

We've got a bit of a break for dinner and then it's off to Toronto where the Pens meet the Leafs in the NHL Network finale.
Blog Photo - NHL Saturday Live Thread
Jess: This will be a fun game. The Penguins are the better team, but I think the Leafs will give them a fight. I’ll pick the Penguins here, but I think it goes down to the wire.
Debi: Well I really honestly have no clue in this one, but because you always say I go against the Pens, Bryan, and because I have the Leafs fanat work making like airless Hitler today, I'll take the Pens!
BK: The Pens and Leafs are the only 2 teams left without an overtime loss.  That means tonight's game has to go to OT, right?  I can't pick against my Pens, never do, but Toronto worries me, I can't remember the last time they actually beat the Leafs IN Toronto!
Pittsburgh Penguins @ Toronto Maple Leafs - 7:00 PM ET - NHL Network (US), CBC, Root Pittsburgh

Next we're going back south of the border to Raleigh where the Canes host the Devils...
Jess: Hurricanes.
Debi: I can't go against the Canes after last night's performance!
BK: I gotta take the Canes here, Devils are still in a free fall, just 2-6-2 in their last 10...and we're ALLLLL on the Canes!
New Jersey Devils @ Carolina Hurricanes - 7:00 PM ET - MSG+, FSN Carolina

A litte further south we find the Habs traveling to Tampa to meet the Bolts...
Jess: Hmm. Upset special? I don’t think so. The Bolts might be at home but I don’t think that will matter to Montreal tonight.
Debi: Gotta take the Habs. Their overall record is just too goodBK: Jess, I am going to pick that upset special.  The Bolts play much better at home than they do on the road, and they'll be looking to rebound after that sad performance against the Jets 2 night ago.  Tampa Bay wins it on home ice.
Montreal Canadiens @ Tampa Bay Lightning - 7:00 PM ET - CBC, RDS, SUN

Let's get out of Florida quickly as we have ano hour to get to Music City for our next game...
Jess: WOW the Preds owned Edmonton last night! I just hope they didn’t score their allotted goals for the week (or month, geez). They may not go as nutty on the Wild as they did the Oilers but I think last night was the kick in the pants they needed to at least wake them up just a bit.
Debi: Well we all know Christi is there in person tonight, so here's hoping the Preds do her proud!
BK: Both teams desperately need to put a nice win streak together.  I know the Preds played last night and the Wild didn't, but the Wild are just horrendous on the road.  I gotta take Nashville to win back to back.  Win it for Christi, Nashville!
Minnesota Wild @ Nashville Predators - 8:00 PM ET - FSN North, FSN Wisconsin, FSN Tennessee

At the same time that game squares off, we have another game out in the desert between the Stars and Coyotes...
Blog Photo - NHL Saturday Live Thread
Jess: Please hockey gods let the Coyotes win.
Debi: Jess you are making me hate the Stars. I can't help it. Gotta take the 'Yotes
BK: I am with you Jess, and for the record Jagr is the one making me hate the Stars.  I'm picking the Coyotes, who if they win in regulation could actually leap frog the Stars and push Dallas out of the playoffs at least for the night.
Dallas Stars @ Phoenix Coyotes - 8:00 PM ET - FSN Southwest, FSN Arizona+

Our night cap is Debi's Flames at Staples for a date with the Kings...
Jess: Aw these poor Flames! At least they don’t have to travel very far after last night’s shutout loss. I’m so sorry Debi, but I don’t have a whole lot of faith that they’ll bounce back, especially against the red-hot Kings tonight.
Debi is not going against her team, I can guarantee you that.
BK: I'm sorry Debi, but I gotta agree with Jess.  I don't think the Kings are going to lose 2 in a row at home.  They're playing some excellent hockey right now.  Kings will take this one on home ice.
Calgary Flames @ Los Angeles Kings - 10:00 PM ET - CBC, FSN West

As always, this is your place to come to talk (or bitch) about the game(s) you're watching this afternoon and into the night.  Stay a while, enjoy an action-packed day of hockey with us.  Let's get this party started!

Once again, I get a shootout.  Unfortunately, we lost.  We got the point, though.

I'm never washing my left hand again.  Shea Weber fist bumped it.
It was cool seeing Trotzy come to life tonight.  I have never heard him so vocal over some questionable calls.  There was a no call when Colin Wilson went down with what seemed to be a serious shoulder injury.  He required quite a bit of help getting up off the ice.
I'm amazed Suter made it out alive.  He instigated several skirmishes tonight and is lucky to have avoided the box as much as he did.  He got a 2 minute roughing in the 3rd.
Pekka Rinne has the bluest eyes.  I'm not sure I will ever sit far away from the bench again.

I envy you.  I miss live hockey games.  I ended up at the Jr Canucks banquet the other night (don't ask) and most of them are a lil pudgy and pretty ummmmm not dreamy??? LOL

Well I see Katy Perry in the crowd but no Teach.

Congrats on the Preds getting a point, Christi - bummer they didn't get two, but at least it's something!

I don't know how I will feel in the morning, so if you want it, go for it :)

haha aww. The funny thing is that my original distaste for them really started with Guerin, Modano (not so much Modano at first but it got there), Turco...that whole team about that time just makes me cringe. Ish. I don't know or dislike anyone personally there now that I can really think of. It's residual.

aww I swear the score was 1-1 last time I looked! These kings are brutal.

I saw the Final to the Dallas/Yotes game and I swear I probably just sounded like Bob Ueker in Major League "The COYOTES WIN IT! The COYOTES WIN IT! OH MY GOD, THE COYOTES WIN IT!" It's bizarre how much I dislike Dallas. Probably not healthy. That may change if/when the realignment happens but I'm not counting on it.

The first period ends with Calgary getting one goal with 17 seconds left, to bring it back to within one.  Kings lead 3-2

I didn't think it would be as high a score after one, or that the Flames would actually be giving the Kings a run for their money.  I'm not getting all cocky or anything though.

Watching the Zags right now but did I see Calgary just tied it up?

3/9/13   |   Debi_L   |   11848 respect

Kings scored first, but Calgary got one as well, and we are tied.  Calgary has a 5 on 3, but isn't capitalizing on it sad

3/9/13   |   Debi_L   |   11848 respect

Wow, what a clusterf***  of a start to this game!!!

3/9/13   |   Debi_L   |   11848 respect

I love Kelly Hrudey.  This was awesome.  Somehow I'm getting this game against the Kings.  The hockey gods are watching over me, knowing I had an awful day.

3/9/13   |   kramer   |   11004 respect

As I said above, since the Pens and Leafs were the only 2 teams without an overtime loss, so it's only fitting this one goes to OT.  Neal and Crosby end it quick in the shootout and the Pens escape Toronto with a win!

3/9/13   |   Debi_L   |   11848 respect

I'm home.  We were watching the Pens and Toronto, but somehow I loss control of the remote angry

3/9/13   |   kramer   |   11004 respect

Pens have a 4-3 lead after 2 periods in Toronto.  I told you the Leafs make me nervous.  I'm just happy the Pens are still winning as badly as they are in second periods this year.  They need to tighten up in the 3rd period, and 20th in the league on the PK, WHAT THE F***?!  That needs to improve vastly in the second half of the season, that's pitiful.

I'll take that mistake today, Jackets with the shutout of the Wings!

It always hurts less to pick wrong when you don't like the losing team. Maybe I *should* pick Dallas sometimes.

I'll take that mistake today, Jackets with the shutout of the Wings!

3/9/13   |   Jess   |   34631 respect

And look at Columbus go!

3/9/13   |   kramer   |   11004 respect

The Bruins hold the Flyers at bay for the shutout!  Also, the Caps took a couple incredibly stupid penalties in the 3rd period after tying the game at 2.  The Isles took advantage with 2 PP goals by Tavares to put this game away, and added a late shorty for a 5-2 victory.

Meanwhile, I'm happy that I might be wrong about the Wings today.  I'm liking the fact they're losing 3-0 after 2 periods.

3/9/13   |   kramer   |   11004 respect

First period is over in both Nassau and Beantown.  The Isles have a 1-0 lead on the Caps, and the Bruins scored 3 goals in 2 1/2 minutes to give them a 3-0 lead on the Flyers!
