Clinching Scenarios Abound, Every Loss is Now Crippling! [NHL Saturday Live Thread]
On a scheduling note, the Penguins were supposed to play Buffalo tonight, but because of the game being postponed last night in Boston and rescheduled for 12:30 ET this afternoon, the Pens/Sabres game is rescheduled for Tuesday night. Who's ready for a second Boston marathon? Including today, the Bruins now have to play 6 games in 9 days, yikes!
For playoff implications, Pittsburgh can clinch the Eastern Conference with a win. Toronto can clinch a playoff spot with a win. Vancouver can also clinch a playoff spot with a win. The Rangers 8-4 win over Buffalo last night officially eliminated both the Sabres and the Flyers.
We don't have much time to waste, so let's get this show on the road! We've got an 8-city tour, so hop on the Q Train and let's go...ALL ABOARD!
We begin in Boston where the Bruins host the Pens, rescheduled from last night. This will be on NHL Network for your viewing pleasure.
Jess: Boston is not only very good, but they’ll be playing inspired. Sorry BK – I’ve gotta take the Bruins
BK: I agree the Bruins are very good, and I also agree they'll be playing inspired. However, I can't pick against my Pens and as I said above a win here locks up the Eastern Conference. Come on Pens!
Pittsburgh Penguins @ Boston Bruins - 12:30 PM ET - NHL Network (US), ROOT Pittsburgh, NESN+
Next it's off to Newark where the Devils host the Panthers in another early afternoon game.
Jess: Oh god. Uhm. Devils.
BK: The Panthers have been eliminated, and the Devils now need to make up 8 points with 5 games to play. They basically need to win out. I think they should get this one today, but the clock is ticking.
Florida Panthers @ New Jersey Devils - 1:00 PM ET - SUN, MSG
From there we head westward to Winnipeg where the Jets play host to the Isles.
Jess: Do the Jets still have a chance? Either way, I think they’ve got this at home.
BK: They definitely still have a chance, Jess. They're 2 points out of both the division lead and 8th place. It won't be easy against the Isles, but I do think the Jets can take this one.
New York Islanders @ Winnipeg Jets - 3:00 PM ET - MSG+, TSN Jets
We can stop for a dinner break before a trio of 7:00 games begin, starting in Montreal where the Caps again visit the Habs. This one is on NBC Sports Network for your viewing pleasure!
BK: The Caps did beat them once at the Bell Centre recently, but I don't think it's going to happen again. Les Habitants vont gagner ce soir!
Washington Capitals @ Montreal Canadiens - 7:00 PM ET - CBC, RDS NBC Sports Network, CSN Washington
At the same time we have the 2 other Eastern Canada teams battling it out in Ottawa, and this one is also on NHL Network in the states for your enjoyment...
Jess: I love that this game is on NHL Network – I think it’ll be a great one. I’m going with the Leafs
BK: The Leafs have been trying to clinch a playoff spot for almost a week now. The Sens will keep it close, but I think this time Toronto finally gets that win.
Toronto Maple Leafs @ Ottawa Senators - 7:00 PM ET - CBC, NHL Network (US)
Our final 7:00 face-off is in Raleigh where the Canes host the Flyers.
Jess: I think maybe the Hurricanes have one more win in them.
BK: Hey guess what, with the Rangers exploding in Buffalo last night, the Flyers are officially eliminated! I gotta go with the Canes to now add insult to injury for Philadelphia.
Philadelphia Flyers @ Carolina Hurricanes - 7:00 PM ET - CSN Philadelphia, FSN Carolina
Next we're off to the Windy City where the Blackhawks play host to the Coyotes.
Jess: Hawks at home
BK: I agree, Hawks have won the Western Conference, but I don't think they're going to sit back tonight. Phoenix will keep this close, but it won't be enough, Hawks win.
Phoenix Coyotes @ Chicago Blackhawks - 8:30 PM ET- FSN Arizona+, WGN
Our night cap features the Canucks hosting the Wings. Had enough hockey yet? No? Good, cause here's one more on the NHL Network to finish off your night!
Jess: Detroit has more to play for, and like you always say BK – they’re like cockroaches when playoff time comes around; they refuse to go away. I think they win this one in Vancouver.
BK: They do refuse to go away, but I think the Canucks win tonight's finale, avoiding the season sweep and keeping the Wings out of the playoffs for at least one more day.
Detroit Red Wings @ Vancouver Canucks - 10:00 PM ET - CBC, NHL Network (US), RDS 2, FSN Detroit
This is the place to come and talk (or bitch) about the game(s) you're watching this afternoon and into the night. Let's get this party started!
