NHL Saturday Night [Live Thread]

Blizzard Schmizzard - it's time for Hockey

12/19/09 in NHL   |   Debi_L   |   11862 respect

Normally on a Saturday night our Live Thread preamble is all about how wel one player or another is playing, how the team is doing or some other statistical information.

Honestly, tonight, the news is entirely of a different nature. First, we have the weather plaguing the East Coast.   So far, it hasn't had any kind of effect on the afternoon games, with all of them getting underway on time.

However, the second "out there" story is the unfortunate fire that broke out in the Minnesota Wild equipment van yesterday, destroying a good deal of the team's equipment, including all of goalie, Niklas Backstrom's gear.   Apparently, two members of the coaching staff returned to Minnesota to try to round up some alternate equipment for tonight's game, but only time will tell whether this will be one of those things that defeats a team before the game even starts.  The replacement equipment arrived in Ottawa at 9:30 this morning, and the team did have the opportunity to skate with the new equipment earlier today.  The Wild and the Ottawa Senators, their opponent this evening, are fairly evenly matched, statistics wise, so if the equipment the Wild  acquired is decent , particularly for their goalie, it could be a decent matchup.

Added to the difficulties the Wild have to endure is the fact that the Sens new goalie is Brodeur, yep, that's right, but he is Mike Brodeur, apparently a distant relative of Martin.  And speaking of Martin, he broke Patrick Roy's record last night for the most regular season games played, and when the Devils meet up with the Atlanta Thrashers tonight, he will be trying to break Terry Sawchuk's record for the most shutouts.  Although the thrashers aren't the worst team in the league, Brodeur has a decent chance of breaking that record tonight.

Other games on at 7:00 pm include the Pittsburgh Penguins meeting up with Buffalo.  With the Sabres only three wins back of the Pens, again, it could be a decent matchup.

At 9:00 pm the Columbus Blue Jackets meet up with the oh-so-strong Colorado Avalanche followed at 10:00 pm by the Washington Capitals in Edmonton to take on the Oilers.

Don't forget to make your picks, and if you're watching, join us here and chat it up.

Here's your full lineup:

7:00 pm

Pittsburgh Penguins at Buffalo Sabres
New Jersey Devils at Atlanta Thrashers
Florida Panthers at Carolina Hurricanes
Montreal Canadiens at New York Islanders
Minnesota Wild at Ottawa Senators
Boston Bruins at Toronto Maple Leafs

See the post I made 3 minutes later. Blame the booze I've been drinking since 2 because I've been snowed in all day.

I just remembered Edmonton is in Alberta. I fail.

Caps give up an own goal thanks to Alzner. They apparently don't like playing in British Colombia.

OK, *now* I'm finally off the Saints game (damn it all to Hell on that one), and it's 1-0 Edmonton in the second. Bust.

Pens won 2-1 in a SO.  I'm not surprised one bit.  It seems like the Pens and Sabres are ALWAYS tied at the end of regulation or it's a 1-goal game no matter which team gets the victory.

Also, congrats to Penn State for its 3rd straight women's volleyball championship!

With the Saints game continuing to be depressing, I should probably go watch the Caps game now. Luckily, both the Caps and Wizards are on West Coast road trips right now, saving them both from Snowpocalypse.

WOW!! Well, he did take a hard hit last night and was feeling it today they said on the pregame show, so I'm actually not surprised to hear that, now that I actually stop to think about it

Oh and his "distant relative" Mike Brodeur is doing just fine in the Sen's goal, BTW

Marty got chased from the game after the 1st period.  He won't even get a win tonight.

I'm sure I saw Carrie Underwood at the Sens game, during the Anthems.

So far the equipment doesn't seem to be affecting the Wild, pretty even game so far.
