NHL Saturday Night [Live Thread]

North, South, East and West! Across the continent it's Hockey Night in North America

Blog Photo - NHL Saturday Night [Live Thread]Good morning! Are you ready for some......hockey?

Today's schedule gets underway very early, with Ottawa and Philadelphia facing off bright and early, and Tampa Bay and Boston following them onto the ice only an hour later.  I'm not sure if my co-horts, Bryan and Jess will be here to make their picks in time, but we'll get this party started and let them join in when they can.

The first thing I have to take note of is the score last night.  Somehow the Columbus Blue Jackets managed to score three goals on the Chicago Blackhawks.  HUH??  Of course, I didn't get to see that game (or any other game - I hate blackouts) but that is a pretty good feat for the Blue Jackets, given that the Blackhawks are still holding on to their streak, doing so with a come from behind win, in OT.  WTG Blue Jackets!

Here's today's schedule, all times Eastern:

12:00 pm

Ottawa Senators (12-6-3) at Philadelphia Flyers (10-11-1)
Broadcast:  NHLN-US, SNET-E, TVA, CSN-PH

Bet with Q-Bucks here

Bryan: The Sens are still playing some great hockey despite the horrific injury bug.  Couple that with the fact that you could put a gun to my head and I'd still never pick the Flyers, and that's why I'm taking the Sens.

Debi:  I really can't believe these Sens.  No Erik Karlsson, no Craig Anderson, and the rest of their injured list looks like a team roster, but yet they keep winning.  I just can't go against them.

1:00 pm

Tampa Bay Lightning (9-10-1)  at Boston Bruins (13-2-2)
Broadcast:  SUN, NESN

Bet with Q-Bucks here

Bryan:  Tampa Bay has been horrendous on the road, and Boston has been nearly untouchable on home ice.  The Bruins have still only played 17 games, fewest in the league!  I think this will be an exciting game, and it will stay close, but I see Boston's home dominance continuing

Debi:  Okay, there are a lot of stats regarding these two teams and their matchups against each other.  Suffice to say, Boston has come out ahead.  I really like the Bolts (mostly I like saying Bolts) but in this case, I gotta go with the Bruins and their current win streak.  I think they will take this one.

3:00 pm

Now we get into the time of day where  most of the country should be mobile and watching hockey.  Or at least they are awake.

New Jersey Devils (10-6-4) at Buffalo Sabres (8-6-1)
Broadcast:  MSG PLUS, MSG-B

Bet with Q-Bucks here

Bryan:  *sigh* Devils

Debi:  The big story here is Martin Brodeur.  He hasn't been able to play goal for the Devils due to a back complaint, and while Hedberg is a more than qualified goalie, he hasn't been stellar in goal.  In fact, since taking over in goal he has allowed 14 goals and the Devils haven't had a win.  The Sabres, however, are on a win streak, so although the better record belongs to the Devils, I gotta go with the Sabres in this matchup.

Washington Capitals (7-11-1) at Winnipeg Jets (10-9-1)
Broadcast:   NHLN-US, CBC, CSN-DC

Bet with Q-Bucks here

Bryan:   The Caps still don't impress me.  I think the Jets are still a bit off, but I think at home they'll be better than Washington.  I'm taking the Jets for this one.

Debi:  Oh those Jets!  Actually, this game is on TV on CBC, meaning it can't be blacked out on me and I will get to see the game.  I'm excited.  One, because I really like both teams.  Of course, it isn't the same as watching my Flames play, but I will enjoy this game, I'm sure.  I know most of the players by their numbers, and I love being able to recognize who is doing what.  That all being said, who am I picking?  I gotta go with the Jets.

7:00 pm

Pittsburgh Penguins (13-8-0) at Montreal Canadiens (13-4-3)
Broadcast:  NHLN-US, CBC, RDS

Bet with Q-Bucks here

Bryan:  Wake up Pens, you CANNOT go 0-3 on this road trip!  Pens win, I know they can do this!

Debi:  This game is also broadcast up here in the frozen north, and my son will be working while it is on, and the game will be on the TV in the dining room.  It will only be the second game he has seen the Habs play this season, so I really hope they pull off the win against Pittsburgh.  I think they can.  Habs it is.

Florida Panthers (6-9-5) at Carolina Hurricanes (10-8-1)
Broadcast:  FS-Florida, FS-Carolinas

Bet with Q-Bucks here

Bryan:  Florida is just too damn confusing for me to figure out, so much Jekyll and Hyde.  Carolina is better than they are and I don't think it's much of a contest.  Canes walk away with this one on their home ice.

Debi:  Carolina has to take this one, regardless of the current stats for Florida.  Florida won the opener against the 'Canes, and some payback is expected, especially with the injury in that game to their goalie.  I expect the game to be a physical one, with the Hurricanes triumphant.

8:00 pm

Anaheim Ducks (15-3-1) at Phoenix Coyotes (9-8-3)
Broadcast:  PRIME; FS-A

Bet with Q-Bucks here

Bryan:   Umm, yeah, Ducks.  Phoenix is too discombooberated and inconsistent.

Debi:  Let's see, the Wild beat the Coyotes and the Ducks beat the Wild, soooooo.....  Yeah, this one is pretty straight forward, I think.  The Ducks just keep on winning.

10:00 pm

Los Angeles Kings (10-6-2) at Vancouver Canucks (10-5-4)
Broadcast:  NHLN-US, CBC, RDS2, FS-W

Bet with Q-Bucks here

Bryan:   Look at that, suddenly the Kings have 10 wins.  So do the Canucks, but I think the Kings are getting it together again, and the champs will take down the 'Nucks with a great road win.

Debi:  This is the last game in our CBC triple header and another one I really want to watch!!  Both teams have struggled right out of the box, but while the Kings seem to have rebounded to their Championship caliber, the Canucks are still having goalie woes.  Neither Luongo nor Schneider have been unbeatable, and the team hasn't determined which of the two should be the "starting goalie"  Add to that the loss of Ryan Kesler, with a broken foot (yeah, everyone around here is lamenting that!) and that tells me Kings, Kings, Kings for the win.

10:30 pm

Nashville Predators (9-7-5) at San Jose Sharks (9-6-4)
Broadcast:  FS-TN, CSN-CA

Bet with Q-Bucks here

Bryan:   San Jose has been their usual selves on home ice, but I see Pekka Rinne being the difference in this game.  It could go to OT, but I'm taking Nashville for a road win in the night cap.

Debi:  These teams are pretty much even in the standings, but the Preds have won both of the previous two meets this season, so I'll take them to sweep the series.

So there you have it.  I refuse to comment on the fiasco between the Avalanche, the Flames and the Blue Jackets over O'Reilly.  All I can say is, stupidity at its finest.  If you want to know more about it, you can find it here

And finally, keeping with the tradition, here is the Cam Ward save on Joel Ward.  Not sure if it has been shown already, but I loved it, so you get it again.

I can safely say this is the most times in one night my ESPN scorecenter app has gone off while at work.  I have it set for every goal scored.  Thank you Pens, this was a much-needed win!  Most goals they've ever scored in a game in Montreal, and only the 4th time they've won IN Montreal when they didn't score the first goal.

Stupid Ducks.

3/2/13   |   Debi_L   |   11862 respect

Dammit

Habs lose, and the nuckleheads score first.

I might just give up and go to bed.

We go to OT tied at 6, and I guess I am the only hockey fan on the Q tonight.

I have no life.

3/2/13   |   Debi_L   |   11862 respect

Habs have jumped ahead of the Penguins 5-4.  Might not end that way, but my son has gotta be happy laugh

3/2/13   |   Debi_L   |   11862 respect

That fight (if you could call it that) in the first period of the Jets/Caps game was ridiculous.  It was like they were going to discuss their strategies before throwing a punch.

3/2/13   |   Debi_L   |   11862 respect

The Sens fall to the Flyers, 2-1.  Boston and TB are still tied, in the third and the next round of games are underway

3/2/13   |   Debi_L   |   11862 respect

The Sens have scored one, and trail 2-1 in the third, while Boston has tied it up.

3/2/13   |   Debi_L   |   11862 respect

Yeah, Flyers have scored two on the Sens. :(  I sure wish Sens could get thru a game without an injury

And Tampa Bay has scored twice on Boston........it's like they looked at my picks and said "muuhahahahah"

3/2/13   |   kramer   |   11004 respect

Looks like the Sens' Lundin is out for this game, and I can't remember the guy that hit him, but he left his feet and got tossed.  Typical Flyers and their dirty play.  They don't know how to play cleanly, it's their MO to antagonize and be jag-offs.

3/2/13   |   Debi_L   |   11862 respect

End of the first period in Philly and no score in the Sens and Flyers game.  Pre game is underway at Boston.
