Some of the Best Teams and Some of the Worst Teams Are in Action Tonight [NHL Live Thread]

11/19/09 in NHL   |   kramer   |   11004 respect

There's tons of action across the U.S. and Canada tonight, a full night of hockey, 8 games in all, featuring some of the NHL's best and also some of the worst.  The Pens, Bruins, Hawks, Flames, and Devils take the ice, and so do the Leafs, Canes, and Ducks.  Starting the night, we'll see a matchup in Atlanta when the Thrashers will try for a 5th straight win while hosting the struggling Bruins from Beantown.  The other 7:00 game, well, someone has to win, even though neither team has done that this year.  This is an early battle for the worst record in the NHL.  The Leafs are 3-11-5 and the Canes are 3-12-5.  Whoever loses this game will have the lowest point total in the league, the 2 are currently tied, and the Canes have placed Eric Staal on IR too.

Then it's the Pens who begin a 3-game road trip up in Ottawa.  They lost yet another defenseman, Jay McKee is the victim this time with an infected finger.  However, Max Talbot is expected to play, and Sergei Gonchar could be back as well.  They all fell out in successive games, so you'd expect them to all come back around the same time.  Ottawa has fallen off a bit, giving up 7 goals in consecutive losses before beating the Leafs, which is easy to do.

Then it's off to St. Louis where the struggling Blues host the still-over-.500 Coyotes.  The other game at 8:00 is in Nashville, where the Devils are looking to rebound.  Yes, it finally happened, the Devils' last road game was a loss.  They better not underestimate the Predators, who are riding a 3-game winning streak, having just beat San Jose, which in the regular season, is never an easy task.  Then at the bottom of the hour it's this year's pleasant surprise, the Blue Jackets out of Columbus, traveling to face the STILL Jekyll and Hyde Dallas Stars.  This month so far they've alternated wins and losses.  If they keep up with that clockwork, their last game last night was a win over the Wings, which means tonight it's time for a loss...unless they can stop this oscillation.

Then an hour later it's a huge game up in Calgary where the Hawks meet the Flames.  Both teams have a record of 12-5-2, making this quite possibly the game of the night.  The Hawks haven't won a road game this month, but they're on a loooong road trip.  The night concludes in Anaheim, where the anemic Ducks return home after their 5-2 loss in Pittsburgh 3 nights ago.  They'll host the Lightning, who are currently playing above .500.  If the Ducks win, at least for tonight, they'll be out of the basement in the Western Conference.  An overtime loss would tie them with the Wild and Blues.  Here's tonight's full lineup...

7:00 PM ET:
Boston Bruins @ Atlanta Thrashers
Toronto Maple Leafs @ Carolina Hurricanes

7:30 PM ET:
Pittsburgh Penguins @ Ottawa Senators

8:00 PM ET:
Phoenix Coyotes @ St. Louis Blues
New Jersey Devils @ Nashville Predators

8:30 PM ET:
Columbus Blue Jackets @ Dallas Stars

9:30 PM ET:
Chicago Blackhawks @ Calgary Flames

10:30 PM ET:
Tampa Bay Lightning @ Anaheim Ducks

As always, this is the place to come to talk (or vent) about the game(s) you're watching tonight.

Nice win to kick off the road trip for the Hawks.  Now go out and celebrate your b-day LEGALLY Patrick Kane, although you're in Canada, so I'm not quite sure how that works.

Is the drinking age still 19 there?

When "good games go bad"? Pens felt this earlier.

Eric Johnson goes takes the puck from one end of the rink to the other, 1 on 3, and scores from the slot in overtime to give the Blues a much needed win in OT against Phoenix

Dallas finally scored, thanks to Mike Modano. 4-1 Columbus.

Huselius scores a PP goal his 2nd of the night Columbus up 3-0. Now that Ive said Raffy Torres scores another PP goal, and Columbus now leads 4-0. Thanks to Trevor Daley getting a 5 minute major and a game misconduct for hitting a Defenseless Blue Jacket from behind. Stupid play Daley, Really stupid!

Read the code of conduct, telling someone to "suck it" is a personal attack, and that is not allowed on this site.

And what exactly makes him the best? I need to know before I suck anything.

You see the entire row hold up letters that spelled P-I-T-T-S-B-U-R-G-H? Awesome. Gotta take something out of this horrible loss.

PP goal for Malkin in garbage time, so the Pens will get blown the f*** out 6-2 instead of 6-1.

I'd say a real close 2nd. That San Jose game was awful.

They were at least getting pucks to the net more in that game.  They rolled over and played dead in this 3rd period, looked like they weren't even trying.

That Columbus/ Dallas game is a fight filled game so far. 3 fights in the first period.

Sorry, it was Afinegenov (sp)

11/19/09   |   tpowell25   |   1627 respect

Antropov GOOOOOOAAAALLLLLL!  Tied 3-3 with 40 seconds left.

11/19/09   |   kramer   |   11004 respect

Fleury is getting taken out after that 5th goal.

11/19/09   |   tpowell25   |   1627 respect

Unless a miracle happens, it looks like the Thrashers will lose their first game in their last 5.

I guess it wasn't a good night to spot the other team 2 goals.

Pens fail to score on the PP and Kelly scores right out of the box on a breakaway.  The Pens need some serious work on their power play or it's just gonna continue to get worse.

11/19/09   |   mk_donley   |   2554 respect

Columbus leads 2-0 on a Huselius SH goal.

11/19/09   |   Dubya   |   39 respect

Even with the injuries I'm not a big fan of playing Sid and Geno on the same line. I don't mind it in situations. The powerplay of course, needing a goal later in a game or just a shift once in a while I like. I think it is better when you can have at least one of those two out there for a minute and a half. It also adds a challenge to the other team. Who will they play their top defensive unit against?

The Thrashers felt bad for scoring so quickly and spotted Boston with another goal to end the 2nd period.  3-2 Boston.  They like to keep it interesting.  Who wants to watch a blowout?  It's all about the ratings.

11/19/09   |   kramer   |   11004 respect

Sens take a 2-1 lead on the PP.

11/19/09   |   tpowell25   |   1627 respect

Told ya..

2-2, Kovalchuk with a PP goal.

11/19/09   |   kramer   |   11004 respect

Sens tie the game at 1 a piece, they kept the puck in the Pens' end of the ice for forever and a day, that goal was a matter of time.

11/19/09   |   kramer   |   11004 respect

Welcome back, Max Talbot, not even 2 minutes into his first game of the year and he's in the penalty box.

11/19/09   |   kramer   |   11004 respect

Jordan Staal scores, third game in a row the Pens have scored less than 2 minutes into the game.

11/19/09   |   tpowell25   |   1627 respect

The Thrashers are so good (how good are they?)...so good that they've spotted Boston 2 goals just to give them a chance.

11/19/09   |   kramer   |   11004 respect

Mark Eaton is a game time decision for the Pens.  Brooks Orpik could be back Saturday.

I'd rather watch turtles make love than that Canes/Leafs tilt.
