Snowed in? The NHL has got you covered! [Live Game Thread]

Blog Photo - NHL Thursday Night [Live Thread]I was having a discussion the other day with one of my co-workers about which teams we love, which teams we follow with some sort of loyalty - perhaps due to a sibling or parent or friend's like of the team, and which teams we really dislike.  Of course, I was told I shouldn't like the Calgary Flames, because I live in BC and the Vancouver Canucks are the province's team!

Hogwash!  What makes someone a fan of one team, instead of another?  I want to explore this further, but for now, it's time to talk tonight's hockey.  None of us have a dog in this fight tonight, which might be a good thing, for me anyway, as I'm becoming a little discouraged.  Yep, I admit it.  The Flames show me moments of greatness, only to show me even more minutes of WTF???

Anyway, here's our schedule for tonight, all times Eastern:

7:00 pm

Buffalo Sabres (6-10-1) at Toronto Maple Leafs (10-7-0)
Broadcast:  MSG-Buffalo, SNET-Ohio

Jess: Wow I was shocked to hear about Lindy Ruff. I'm not sure if that was a logical choice by Buffalo that just hits us long-time fans because we've gotten so used to having him around or if it was just a stupid move. Admittedly, the Sabres haven't done a whole lot recently so I can kind of understand. But it's odd. Anyway, There's no question that this will affect team morale, so I don't see the Sabres getting past a much better team tonight.

Bryan:   *Sigh* Leafs win, Buffalo is a mess and a half.  Poor Lindy Ruff, as a true hockey fan I am going to miss him behind the Buffalo bench. :(

Debi:  I agree Bryan.  What a mess! After 16 years, don't let the door hit you on the way out.  I don't know if Buffalo will even know which end of the rink to score in.  Toronto easily.

Florida Panthers (4-7-4) at Philadelphia Flyers (8-9-1)
Broadcast:  FS-Florida; CSN-Philadelphia

Jess: I can't see Florida beating the Flyers right now.

Bryan:   I hope Philly is exhausted from last night, the jerks!  Panthers win again on Philly's ice because I will never pick the Flyers even if you put a gun to my head.

Debi:  Philly is exhausted! How could they not be! Then again, Florida has no get up and go, either.  Both teams are bleh.  However, just because they did beat the Pens last night, I'll take Philly (muhahahahaha)

New Jersey Devils (9-3-4) at Washington Capitals (5-9-1)
Broadcast:  MSG PLUS, CSN-DC

Jess: It seems like the Devils have taken a step back in their play, and now they're facing the Capitals on the road. I really don't think Washington is as bad as their record seems to indicate. I'm going with the upset here.

Bryan:  This last week the Devils suddenly seem human.  I'm actually gonna pick the Caps tonight. (Watches above for signs of the apocalypse)

Debi:  Given that the first game went to OT, I'm not ready to discount the Caps yet, either.  I gotta hope they get to even the series tonight.

Winnipeg Jets (6-8-1) at Carolina Hurricanes (8-5-1)
Broadcast: TSN-JETS, FS-Carolinas

Jess: I'm picking another upset here. Jets.

Bryan:   I see the Staal brothers having a big game tonight.  Canes send the Jets packing even though the Jets will keep it close.

Debi:   I'm really surprised at the Jets this season.  I'm pleased, too, because at least some of the Canadian teams (other than the Canucks and Oilers, of course) are not completely sucking!.. Okay, so they aren't above 50%, but they are .....awww who am I kidding, the 'Canes are all over this shizzle.

7:30 pm

New York Islanders (6-9-1) at Montreal Canadiens (11-4-1)
Broadcast:  RDS, MSG PLUS 2, TSN-HABS

Jess: Holy Schnikies the Canadiens just keep rolling. I think they stay hot.

Bryan:   Les Habitents vont gagner ce soir.  Les Islanders "smell-ay to high he-ven!" /Pepe le Pew'd!

Debi:  Yeah, what he said.

New York Rangers (8-6-1) at Ottawa Senators (9-6-2)
Broadcast:  MSG, SNET-E, TVA

Jess: While I realize the Senators are definitely having a tough time of things, I also think that they will give the Rangers hell. New York is once again falling into their old ugly habit of just not shooting the puck. It might be a matter of whether the Rangers beat themselves here, but I think they skate away with a win.

Bryan:  Rangers win it, I don't have the confidence in Ottawa right now to start a win streak.

Debi:  Well, you know what, Bryan? I'm gonna disagree with you here.  I think the Sens are determined not to let the injuries, the bad luck and the naysayers get them down.  Maybe they won't win, but I think they can, and if they don't I believe it will be a really good game.  I'm taking the Sens.

Boston Bruins (9-2-2) at Tampa Bay Lightning (8-6-1)
Broadcast:  NHLN-US, NESN, SUN

Jess: This will be an interesting game - though I think these teams *look* a lot closer on paper than they actually are. Bruins are just better. I'm giving them the edge tonight.

Bryan:  This is my pick for game of the night.  The Bolts have been terrific on home ice and that's where the game is tonight.  I'm taking those Bolts perhaps in OT.

Debi:  Game of the Night? Well, it certainly will be a good game, but not one I will see.  With the Bruins penalty killing and the Lightning offensive play, it should be entertaining and really good hockey, but I think the Bruins might have enough to win this one on the road.

Columbus Blue Jackets (4-10-2) at Detroit Red Wings (7-6-3)
Broadcast: FS-O, FS-D

Jess: Hmm. I'm calling Columbus just for kicks here.

Bryan:  Columbus is still Columbus, and they'll make the Wings look like the Wings of old tonight.  Home team walks away with this one.

Debi:  Ugh.  I just don't even care about this game.

8:30 pm

Vancouver Canucks (8-3-4)  at Dallas Stars (8-7-1)
Broadcast:  SNET-P, FS-SW

Jess: Bryan is going to have to be the tie-breaker here. I will never pick the Stars. It would be really cool if a hockey team could go a full season without winning a game.

Bryan:  Debi hates the Canucks, Jess hates the Stars, and Jagr is still an attention whore.  Canucks will win this and make Jagr cry. (evil laugh)

Debi:  Yes, I hate the Canucks.  'nough said.

9:30 pm

Minnesota Wild  (7-6-2) at Edmonton Oilers (6-6-3)
Broadcast:   FS-North, FS-Wisconsin, SportsNet-West

Jess: I'm taking the Wild here, primarily because I've seen them play and I haven't had much of a chance to see the Oilers. And I'm still mad at them.

Bryan:   Both of these teams are inconsistent at best.  First to 3 wins tonight.  Eenie-meenie-minie-mo...Oilers.

Debi:  Yep, I hate the Oilers too, so I have to take the Wild.

So there you have it.   Once again, if you are a hockey lover, there are lots of games to entertain you.  Every single game is televised somewhere.  If you are watching and cheering, join us.  If you don't get to watch and want updates, join us!

AMEN!!!! Always reminds me of the Free Willy movie.  I always wish a huge shark or whale or something would come out of nowhere and scare the crap out of them!!

Scary hit on Anton Anisimov in the Blue Jackets/Red Wings game.  He was taken off the ice on a stretcher after falling and not even moving one bit, even though the players were fighting for the puck all around him.

I'm almost ashamed to admit that I kinda started liking the Ducks cuz of Disney.  blush  Trying to convince my kids that it was a great idea to watch hockey.  They didn't really agree, so we watched The Mighty Ducks.  It kind of went on from there.

(Edited by Jess)

I live in Canucks country, for sure. We can basically see Vancouver from our back patio. Okay, not quite, but you get the idea. Anyone who's into hockey and grew up here are either Wings fans (yea, I don't know) or Canucks fans. I grew up in North Idaho though, and the few people who followed hockey there were generally Avalanche fans. I think that was due to those being the only games we got on television there. I like the Avs. I don't love the 'Nucks but I don't hate them with the vehemence that you and Teach do either. What made me a Ducks fan? Personally knowing players from Spokane who went on to Anaheim once they hit it big. I don't know what I'm going to do if Seattle ever gets a team.

Watching Carolina and the Jets right now. Some fast-paced hockey so far tonight, even if the scoreboard doesn't show it.
