Every Point Matters Now, Your Playoff Lives Depend on It! [NHL & Frozen Four Live Thread]

4/11/13 in NHL   |   kramer   |   11004 respect

Hello out there in FanIQ Land and welcome to a Thursday night chock full of hockey!  The races are getting tighter, some big names are still on the outside looking in, and time is running out.  After tonight's games every team will be down to single digits as far as games remaining, with one team as few as 6 left.  Boston and Montreal are fighting for the Northeast Division, as are Winnipeg and Washington for the Southeast, and Detroit is hanging on for dear life to the final playoff spot in the West.  All of these teams are playing tonight along with ones that hope to play spoiler, and others that are trying to earn a playoff berth.

There are so many story lines for tonight's games, and my co-hostesses with the mostesses are here to join me for what promises to be an exciting night on the ice!  I'm your thorn between two roses, Bryan, and you know what to do. Debi and Jess, let's get this show on the road, shall we?  From Beantown to Tampa to the Motor City and LA, IIIIT'S A HOCKEY NIGHT in North America!  We've got a 9-city tour and a long way to go, so hop on the Q Train and let's do this...ALL ABOARD!

We begin in Bah-ston where the Bruins host the Isles.
Jess: I can't not take the Bruins here.
Debi:  Ugh, I know I'm late!!! I have to take the Bruins!
BK: The Bruins hung on last night to further put a damper on the Devils' playoff hopes.  Tonight they're back home against the Isles in a game that should be more exciting than in years past.  The Bruins are trying to stay atop the Northeast while the Isles are looking to hold onto their playoff standing.  I wouldn't be surprised to see this a lot closer than you'd expect, but in the end I think the Bruins come out on top.
New York Islanders @ Boston Bruins - 7:00 PM ET - MSG+, NESN+

Next it's a short trip into the city of brotherly love as the Flyers meet the Sens.
Jess: Hmm...Senators seem to be the better team here.
Debi:  Go Sens!!
BK: Senators...that's all folks!
Ottawa Senators @ Philadelphia Flyers - 7:00 PM ET - SportsNet East, TVA, CSN Philadelphia

From Philly we're off to our Nation's Capital where those Caps host the Canes.
Jess: Is it my imagination or do these teams play like...always? It seems almost every time these guys are on the ice it's against each other. I have to go with the Caps at home here.
Debi:  I am definitely feeling some deja vu here...Caps it is!
BK: The Canes are falling like rocks, while the Caps are flying high.  Carolina is just finding ways to lose right now. I gotta go with the Caps as the Canes are falling apart at the worst possible time.
Carolina Hurricanes @ Washington Capitals - 7:00 PM ET - FSN Carolina, CSN Washington

Next we're off to Buffalo where the Sabres host les Habitants.
Jess: When Buffalo's good, they're good against the Canadiens. One of these games though, the Habs have got to win, right? I'm calling this one for them.
Debi:  I just can't go against the Havs, even though this could come down to a SO, I believe the Canadiens will take it.
BK: I'm not so sure on this one.  This is the final meeting between these two, and the Sabres have given the Habs fits this year.  As bad as they are, they've actually beaten Montreal 3 out of the 4 games!  I'm very tempted to give this one to the Sabres, and I think they are the best possible team to play the spoiler role.  You know what?  I will, Sabres win et les Habitants vont perdre ce soir.  They just cannot figure out Buffalo for some reason.
Montreal Canadiens @ Buffalo Sabres - 7:30 PM ET - CBC, RDS, MSG Buffalo

Next we're off to sunny Florida where the Pens continue their Southeast road trip against the Bolts.
Jess: Pens.
Debi: Ha hahahahahahaha Yeah, Pens it is.
BK:Blog Photo - NHL Thursday Night Live ThreadKris Letang is back tonight!  This can only help what's become an anemic power play lately.  The Pens are looking to sweep, and while this game worries me, I still have enough faith to never pick against them.  They may have the division won already, but they still want that #1 seed in the East, and there's still some more work to do.  Letang is the first piece of the puzzle to return healthy, and that's a very good sign!  This is also on Versus NBC Sports Network for your viewing pleasure.
Pittsburgh Penguins @ Tampa Bay Lightning - 7:30 PM ET - NBC Sports Network, TSN, ROOT Pittsburgh

From Tampa we're hightailing it back up to Motown where the Wings host the Sharks.
Jess: Hmm this one is tough for me. Wings I guess.
Debi:  Ugh, I just don't know! I keep thinking the Wings have got to come out and WIN, and they keep coming out and not winning.  I'm taking the Sharks.
BK: Detroit can't lose that 8th seed with a loss tonight, but it can sure put them on pins and needles even more so than they and their fans already are.  They're only one point ahead of 9th, and just 2 points ahead of 11th!  The Sharks have found themselves again, but this is almost a must win for the Wings.  I'm just not confident that they can pull this out at The Joe.  Sharks get a very impressive road win in Detroit tonight.
San Jose Sharks @ Detroit Red Wings - 7:30 PM ET - CSN California, FSN Detroit

Let's continue heading west to Winnipeg where the Jets host the lowly Panthers.
Jess: Jets are weird. It seems like they lose the ones they should be winning, and get surprising wins when it seems like they should lose. That said, I'm calling the upset tonight.
Debi:  The Jets have come all this way this year, and they need to keep on keeping on.  I won't get to see it, but I'll follow it on twitter and NHL.com.  Still looking for a Benny.......
BK: The Jets need to take advantage of this game tonight.  They've played more games than anyone, and will have played 42 after tonight.  They're in a must win scenario, and this is a team they should absolutely destroy.  Jets won't let their faithful down, they have this one tonight.
Florida Panthers @ Winnipeg Jets - 8:00 PM ET - FSN Florida, TSN Jets

Back south of the border we go to the Twin Cities where the Wild host the Blues.
Jess: Wow, should be a good game actually. I will go with the home team.
Debi:  You're right,Jess, this should be a good one.  Both teams have actually surprised me this year.  I'm really on the fence here, not sure who to pick.  The tie breaker for me is home ice advantage.  Wild.
BK: The Blues have played the fewest games, just 38 entering tonight.  They're in a tie for 6th with the Blues, and a win could potentially vault one of them up to 4th in the West and give them a little breathing room.  This is the game of the night for me, folks!  This has all the makings of a playoff atmosphere, more than any other game.  One of these teams is getting a huge two points, and I'm taking the Blues with their defense to pull off an impressive road victory.
St. Louis Blues @ Minnesota Wild - 8:00 PM ET - FSN Midwest, FSN North, FSN Wisconsin

Finally we end the night in Hollywood where the Kings host the Avs in our night cap.
Jess: Ouch. I'm sure the Kings have got this.
Debi:  Oh my.  I have to take the Kings.
BK: I have no confidence in the Avs to be able to pull off a road upset like that two games in a row.  Kings win it at Staples.  For the night owls, this is also on the NHL Network in both the US AND Canada!
Colorado Avalanche @ Los Angeles Kings - 10:30 PM ET - NHL Network (US & Canada), Altitude, KCOP 13

Jess: Since last night was not a happy one for me sports-wise, I can't find it in me to show highlights from any of the games. Yes, this is me being selfish. But since King Henrik knocked my socks off in his game last night guess what you get instead? Yep - my favorite. Goalie love!

BK: Thanks Jess, although he's a division foe, I secretly enjoy watching Lundqvist anytime he's not playing against my Pens!  As always, this is your place to talk (or bitch) about the game(s) you're watching this evening!  Join the fun, and let's get this party started!

P.S.: If you happen to be watching this:Blog Photo - NHL Thursday Night Live Thread feel free to join in as well!

My Minnesota Wild are scoring less than I did in high school. Looking forward to this weekend's Rangers/Islanders game, though. The first real meaningful game between those two teams in ages. Should be fun.

Brian Elliott does it again.  3rd straight road shutout and now the Blues franchise record for consecutive minutes on the road without giving up a goal.  Blues win their 6th straight and are right in the middle of the playoff fight for 4th place in the Western Conference

Oh...my...f***ing...GOD!  TANNER GLASS finally gets his first goal of the year as they set him up for a PP goal into a wide-open net!  Pens win 6-3..

Letang comes back and the Pens score 3 power play goals.  Coincidence?  I think not, welcome back Letang!

Stupid Sharks/Wings game.

4/11/13   |   kramer   |   11004 respect

This game is getting ugly, 5-2 Pens, fight afterwards, Orpik with a cross check on St. Louis, 3 guys converged on him, now Gudas for the Bolts gets a 10-minute misconduct.

"He beats Bishop like a rented mule!  You'd have to be here to believe it!"

4-2 Pens early in the 3rd on a 4-on-4 situation, and whodathunk it?  Malkin scores against Tampa Bay...again.

I have no hockey on TV and no kid working, so no hockey at BP.  NHL.com it is!!!

(sorry I was late!)

Pens lead 3-2, 4 consecutive PP goals in this game.

The first of the Frozen Four games (UMASS-Lowell vs. Yale) was headed to OT, tied 2-2 at the end of regulation.

I have to admit - I'm kind of glad my Ducks don't play tonight. This Ducks vs. M's for air time on my television is wearing me out, and King Felix is pitching tonight. I don't know how that would have gone down and I'm glad I don't have to choose tonight.

BK - I love Lundqvist so much. I've always been kind of a goalie whore though.
