NHL Trade Deadline Winners & Losers
Many Moves Were Made, And it Proved to be a Buyers' Market During a Very Busy NHL Trade Deadline
In one of the busier trade deadlines in all of major sports, the NHL saw 22 deals take place involving teams either dumping salary, building for the future, or adding that ever-important last piece of the Stanley Cup puzzle.  Some teams did well in their moves, other teams left many fans scratching their heads, while the most important action of the day involved a trade that didn't happen at all.  Let's take a look at who made the best choices at the deadline:

Winners

Calgary Flames

The addition of Jordan Leopold automatically gives the Flames one of the West's most imposing bluelines, while winning the Olli Jokinen sweepstakes gives them the best Center that was available.  Calgary instantly upgraded in 2 major areas of need, and are now legitimate contenders in West.

Florida Panthers

Didn't do anything, which is exactly what this team needed.  By keeping star defenseman Jay Bouwmeester, the Florida Panthers organization sent a strong message to their fans.  Panthers' ownership let the team and their supporters know that they have their sights set on the playoffs, and that they want to make some noise once they get there.

Edmonton Oilers

Since their pursuit of Jaromir Jagr came up empty this past off season, the Oilers have been searching for a forward who can really make an impact for their squad.  By subtracting a mediocre forward in Erik Cole and adding 2 key offensive guys in Patrick O'Sullivan and Ales Kotalik, the Oilers gave their team a chance at making the playoffs.  After all, that's what deadline deals are supposed to accomplish, right?

Pittsburgh Penguins

Although Bill Guerin couldn't push the San Jose Sharks over the top following a deadline day acquisition after the 2007 deadline, he is just what a dysfunctional Penguins team needs.  Adding solid winger Chris Kunitz to the fold instantly gives the Pens much needed scoring from the wings and some solid veteran leadership.

I'm glad that the Blues resisted the urge of trying to improve there team to make a playoff push.  To me, making a short term move only makes sense if you think you have the team that can win it all, especially if you have to give up some pretty good prospects in return.  The rumored deal for Pronger to come back to St. Louis certainly had fans excited but in the end, the Blues management did the right thing by holding on to everyone.  John Davidson and company have built this organization up from scratch and the future is bright for many years to come.  No need to try and ruin your long term goals for a short term solution that wouldnt bring you any closer to winning a Cup right now.

The Penguins did pretty well. They acquired the kind of veteran leadership the team needs, and they didn't give up much in the process

Antropov was a great addition who brings what this team needs- a scoring touch and size
Morris will hopefully be a nice fit, but I feel like we gave up too much for him

I like the pick up of Vermette for the Blue Jackets,  A guy who can help the leagues' worst power play on a team that is currently in position to make their first postseason ever,

The Blue Jackets needed a center first and foremost, and they didn't address that need.

There are those Flyers' goalie issues, but the Flames may have one of the top #1 lines in the league now.

Youre right for Morris giving up a fan favorite Petr Pruca, Nigel Dawes and Dmitri Kallin.

Well, I really didn't want to see Patrick O'Sullivan go; however, I am trying to stay optimistic------------I mean the guy the Kings got, Justin Williams, is pretty good--wait, he's injured, well go# d@m%6!

Umm....when was the last time Dallas was swept in the first round?  They seem to fare pretty well in that regard.

And the Stars claimed Brendan Morrison off of waivers from the Ducks, so they made a small move.  He's a solid player who should help them out while they deal with injuries to their forwards.
