If You're Not Watching the Orange Bowl, Check Out Some Hockey! [NHL Live Thread]

Bowl season isn't quite finished yet, but if you're not watching the remainder of the BCS bowls, check outsome hockey this evening.  There are 10 games in all ranging from DC to Disneyland.

The Capitals start off the night at the Verizon Center against the Habs, who are playing great on the road as of late.  Meanwhile, the Caps are trying to avoid losing 4 in a row in regulation for the first time in a couple of years.  Also at 7:00 is another game with international flavor as the Panthers go from sunny Miami to the snow and cold of Toronto.  The Leafs are achy-breaky right now while the Panthers are coming off a 6-2 rout of the Pens 2 nights ago.  The final 7:00 game is in New Jersey where los Diablos will host the Stars.  Dallas has won the last 2 meetings with the Devils, but have lost the last 4 IN Newark.

At 7:30, someone is going to break a losing streak at Mellon Arena.  The Pens have lost 5 in a row while the visiting Thrashers have lost 8 in a row!  The Pens ended a 5-game losing streak last year around this time to Atlanta on home ice, and they're looking to win their 7th in a row over the Thrashers, talk about having a team's number.  Ilya Kovalchuk is being tossed around in trade rumors and Chris Kunitz is out 4-6 weeks with surgery to repair an abdominal muscle.  Then the Bruins travel to Ottawa on the heels of becoming the first home team to win the Winter Classic, followed by a 3-2 loss last night at MSG.  From the no surprise department, Tim Thomas was recently named to the U.S. Olympic team, like anyone thought he wouldn't be named!

Nashville kicks off a pair of 8:00 games when they host the Flames.  In the opposite from the Pens/Thrashers game, someone in Nashville is going to have a winning streak snapped.  The Flames are looking for a season high 5th win in a row and the Preds are trying to win their 4th in a row.  Then it's off to the Windy City where the Hawks host the Wild.  The Blackhawks are also looking for their 4th win in a row while the Wild will attempt to snap a 3-game losing streak.

Time to head westward to Edmonton, where the Oilers will host the Coyotes.  Both teams have lost their last 2 games, but the Coyotes are still playing great while the Oilers have run out of fossil fuel, having lost 9 of their last 10.  Then the final 2 games start at 10:00.  Think Atlanta is in a pickle right now with 8 losses in a row?  The Blue Jackets are worse.  They're trying to avoid their 12th loss in a row, and they'll have to do it by beating Roberto Luongo.  The finale is out in Anaheim where the penalty machine that is the Ducks will host the Wings.  The Ducks are trying to win their 4th in a row on home ice though.  Here's tonight's full lineup...

7:00 PM ET:
Montreal Canadiens @ Washington Capitals
Florida Panthers @ Toronto Maple Leafs
Dallas Stars @ New Jersey Devils

7:30 PM ET:
Atlanta Thrashers @ Pittsburgh Penguins
Boston Bruins @ Ottawa Senators

8:00 PM ET:
Calgary Flames @ Nashville Predators
Minnesota Wild @ Chicago Blackhawks

9:00 PM ET:
Phoenix Coyotes @ Edmonton Oilers

10:00 PM ET:
Columbus Blue Jackets @ Vancouver Canucks
Detroit Red Wings @ Anaheim Ducks

As always, this is your place to come in order to talk (or bitch) about the game(s) you're watching tonight!

Go USA! Great goal by Carlson, who currently plays for Hershey and appeared in a few games for the Caps already this year.

Pens scored 2 in the third period, snapping their 5-game losing streak with a 5-2 win over the Thrashers.  The Pens have now won 7 in a row against Atlanta and the Thrashers' skid continues, 9 in a row in the L column.

This Junior Championship has been a hell of a game, even if the US blew the lead. As someone who's never gotten the chance to watch junior hockey, I can't get over the speed of it.

Wow that was quick.  I changed the channel to see how the footbball game was going for 5 minutes and came back and it was tied.  Geez.

For you interested Goal Streakers out there, Parise and Hossa (2 goals) are the only ones that have scored so far tonight.

Ovechkin and Crosby didn't score, so I'm sure that no more than 10 people will have a streak after tonight.

5 goals scored for the Penguins but none by the guy that's on the Streak Poll.  Freaking A.

I've been catching as much of that as I can.  That's an outstanding game so far.

It was scoreless after 1, it's 3-2 Pens after 2.  Atlanta will have a PP for 13 seconds to start the 3rd period.  Ruslan Fedotenko got a weird bounce for a 3rd Pens goal, and Crosby made an errant pass from behind his own net that led to Slater's second goal of the game for Atlanta.  If not for Johnson in the first 2 periods, the Thrashers might have 4 or 5 goals already, he's standing on his head.

Of course Atlanta spots them a goal.  They wouldn't have it any other way.

The birds that are dressed to go to a wedding are going down tonight.  The Thrashers are playing good offensive hockey, even with the losing streak.  If Pavalec can give them any decent goal tending tonight, it could be the start of a historic run.

Because you know they will be the 2009/2010 Stanley Cup Champs.

Kramer, that's as good a thread as I've ever read on the Q, great job.! Respects are yours.!!
