NHL Week In Review 10/17-10/23

Stoney's NHL Week In Review Vol. 2 - Skate Harder

10/23/11 in NHL   |   The_Real_Stoney   |   24042 respect

Southeast Division
WAS   7-0-0   14        W7
FLA     4-3-0   8          W1
TB       3-3-2   8          W2
CAR    3-3-2   8          L2
WIN    2-4-1   5          W1

Notes: CAR – Jeff Skinner continues to lead the team in scoring (3-6-9) but captain and perennial all-star Eric Staal is -10.. They’re another team fighting the inconsistency bug as they have had some good wins, but some ugly losses, including Saturday in Winnipeg. FLA – Jacob Markstrom earned his 1st NHL win Saturday over the Islanders, Brian Campbell is having a resurgence in Florida, and Kris Versteeg continues to shine (4-4-8) But this team is old, and how high can expectations truly be? TBL – Thanks to the play of Mathieu Garon, including his shutout Saturday over Buffalo, TB has won two in a row. Marc-Andre Bergeron is tied for the lead in points by D-Men. Does Garon continue to get a bulk of the playing time with Roloson struggling mightily? WAS – The only remaining unbeaten ream in the league. One of the most surprising stats I found, the Caps are being outshot an average of 3 shots per game. When leading goal scorers are Marcus Johansson and Jason Chimera (4G each), is there another team as deep as this? WIN – The new Jets got their first win Monday, but are showing this is going to be a long year. At least the fan support is there. 20 year old Alex Burmistrov (2-4-6) has been their best player.

Central Division
DET     5-1-0   10        L1
CHI     4-1-2   10        L1
STL     4-4-0   8          W2
NSH    3-3-1   7          W1
CLB     0-7-1   1          L8

Notes: CHI – What a fun and impressive team to watch. The Hawks are talented and deep and Corey Crawford continues to be strong between the pipes. They are looking a lot like the team that won the cup two years ago. CLB – Vaclav Prospal and Rick Nash are going at a point-per-game pace, but this team has been as bad as their record indicates. I’ll ask it again, will this team win a game in October? DET – Even though they were hammered by Washington, Detroit has been one of the best teams in the league to start the year. Zetterberg and Clearly have yet to heat up, but Johan Franzen (4G in 6GP) is poised for a big year. When will Nicklas Lidstrom start showing his age? NAS –The Preds have seemingly always had the label of being a strong defensive team and are in the middle of the pack this year. Their struggles have come with finding offense and effort. They average the lowest number of shots per game (22.1) and have long lapses of offensive pressure in every game. Shea Weber only has 2 points this year. STL – A popular preseason playoff pick, The Blues have yet to play to their potential, but have beat some very good teams. Brian Elliott who was awful in Ottawa and Colorado last year has played great filling in for the struggling Jaroslav Halak in net. Matt D’Agostini has been impressive (4G, +7).
