Stoney's NHL Week In Review Vol. 2 - Skate Harder

10/23/11 in NHL   |   The_Real_Stoney   |   25646 respect

Northwest Division
COL    6-2-0   12        W1
VAN     4-3-1   9          W2
MIN      3-2-3   9          L1
EDM    3-2-2   8          W1
CGY     2-4-1   5          L2
Notes: CGY – For a team many people didn’t think much of going into the season, they have not disappointed. Kiprusoff has played well in net, but there hasn’t been a reason to get excited about this team.. Is this the year they blow things up and possibly trade Iginla? COL – Remain undefeated on the road (6-0) and winless at home (0-2). With the #2 PP and #7 PK, can the Avs keep up their strong special teams play?  EDM – It’s all about the resurgence of Nikolai Khabibulin. His 0.72 GAA leads the league, and he’s allowed 1-1-1-0 goals in his 4 starts but only won 2. With only 3 games left in his audition, will Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (5G 2A) stay with the big club? MIN – Dany Heatley and Devon Setoguchi have started to show good chemistry, and working with underrated Mikko Koivu make for a solid top line. Nik Backstrom has been solid in net, but this is another team that hasn’t done anything impressive this year. VAN – The Sedins continue to roll combing for 22 pts in 8 games, 12 by Daniel. The addition of David Booth to play on the 2nd line with Ryan Kesler just makes them that much more dangerous. Luongo has started slow again, and Cory Schneider has already made 3 starts. Will they continue that kind of playing time split as the season moves along?
Pacific Division
DAL     6-2-0   12        L1
LAK     5-1-1   11        W4
ANA     4-3-0   8          L2
PHO    3-3-1   7          W1
SJS     3-3-0   6          W2
Notes: ANA – The Ducks and their big guns have started getting on track, but the numbers have not been big. Selanne, Perry and Getzlaf (who scored his first 2 goals of the year Sunday) lead the team with 4 pts. How is this team only 3-29 on the power play? DAL – The Starts continue to be one of the best stories to start the year with their great start. Kari Lehtonen has been a will in net (1.47GAA, .957 save%) and has been in for all 6 wins. Can Lehtonen stay healthy and can Jamie Benn and Loui Eriksson carry this team offensively? LAK – Jonathan Quick leading the league in save % (.972) and 2nd in GAA (0.81). Thanks to that, the Kings have allowed a league low, 9 goals this year. Jack Johnson has been great on the blueline with the absence of Doughty and has 3 goals already this year. New additions Mike Richards and Simon Gagne are providing just what this team needs  PHO – Shane Doan just continues to produce (7pts) and Ray Whitney has had a good start offensively (3G), but without Bryzgalov, this team just doesn’t have enough firepower to compete in this division.  Update – As soon as I say this, they hang 5 on the Ducks… SJS – Antti Niemi has returned to the lineup and played well, but not spectacular. Ryan Clowe and Joe Pavelski lead the team with 6pts, and Brent Burns (3pts) has looked really good so far. It’s only a matter of time before this team puts together a long run of wins.
